As i stepped up onto the steps of the bus he reached down to shake my hand and his voice was exactly like a rolling quiet thunder. His wife's voice danced softly when she spoke like a gentle rain and her smile completely genuine. Both of them extraordinary people. I was a female police offer serving in New Orleans at the time. I still have the drumsticks from his concert given to me by the band and some other items. What an honor to meet them both. I will never forget how amazing it was.
It was only incidental that i got to meet him. While waiting for the concert to start I became engaged in a conversation with a quiet man napping near the stage with a cowboy hat pulled over his eyes. I told him how much Waylon's music had affected my life growing up and how excited i was to be able to watch him perform. Turns out he was the driver for Waylon's tour bus and he actually arranged for me to meet Waylon and his beautiful wife in person after the concert on the bus.
I grew up listening to this mans music and absolutely loved it all. His sound was so unique it paved the way for many musicians who have followed him. In 1984 he played the Worlds Fair in New Orleans, Louisiana and I had the privilege of providing security for his stage as a police officer and actually met him in person afterwards along with his lovely wife. I will never forget stepping up into his bus and him leaning down to shake my hand and say hello. His voice rumbled like quiet thunder.
Every one has comments about Waylon. but I pay no never mind to them. To me Waylon will always be the great country singer of all time. Yeah, I know someone will debate it. I don't care. His real fans know who and where he stood. We will love him any way. I'm a musician and have a band. My band will be a tribute to his music. Never forgotten.
People think they're ready for the country nowadays but they wouldn't know no real country if it came up bit em in the ass, and slapped em in the mouth.
Sorry.. It's quickly apparent that The Outlaw is once again flipping the bird to Nashville brass just by the titles of the songs he sung that night. Are you ready for the country, I've always been crazy, lonesome on'ry and mean, are you sure Hank done it this way, etc. Nashvilles way to get back...film it then "loose it" for 20 yrs.
One of the few singers you're likely to ever hear, that never strays off key, ever. And without the use of todays pitch correcting thingamajigs or ear monitors.

@jooneybuggy Boy do I ever agree with you. It just didn't get any better than Waylon, Johnny, Willie, Kris, Merle and David Allen. The only hope we have today is Dwight Yoakum and he just doesn't record enough. sj
I'd like to think that when I die I can sit around and jam with old Waylon, but I bet God already has him booked up as his personal picker and grinner. Dang it.....

Interesting first and last song choices that he picked for preforming at Grand Ole Opry; Are You Ready For The Country and Are You Sure Hank Done It this Way. Does anyone think he was making to a statement?
Waylon Jennings was the real thing, grew up with him blaring away on the stereo, saw him live once- he was epic in person- very powerful.
There were no "pro tools" back when this guy was kicking ass and taking names-
Waylon is the REAL DEAL. He from a generation of men solved their problems the old fashioned non prescription way - with drugs, alcohol, and loose women- and of course doling out a round of ass kicking every now and then.
@natbienvenue310 Well, to be fair, before Waylon used cocaine he used prescription pills to get high. And he never really drank when he took pills. (According to him in his autobiography.) shooter does this song...he may not look like his father. he might not have that trademark deeeep voice. but he's something special in his own right..and pays a deep tribute to his father..unlike second generations stars try to shake the image of their famous fathers..shooter jennings loved his daddy and wont let the world forget his music...shame nashville and country radio seem to ignore him completely..but his fan base is getting pretty huge.God bless'em
@msm32078 Gimmick my azz, U need to show up to one of the bars in nc or alabama where Jamey plays for 3 hrs str8 without a wardrobe change, an attempt to sell t-shirts or even a break to introduce the band, There will never be another Waylon, But my friend I will argue that there will also never be another Jamey Johnson
Show me one better live performance in live country music. You can look long and hard. Your not going to find it., and if you think you have found it, your full of shit. Long live Waylon and Ralph Mooney.
@ragester1 As I wrote on some other Waylon videos...Kris Kristofferson said Waylon was the best Country and Western singer ever and I sure agree. I saw him in the early 70's and he was wonderful. You got that right about being a bad sob. Read his autobiography, it's fascinating, you can get it on Amazon.com. It will be a great read, I promise you. sj
@ragester1 I think Country Music needs a Waylon kick in the ass again but, Country Music isn't ready for him anymore. It's a shame what gets passed off as Country Music theses days. You'll always be remembered Waylon.
There was no better live band than him and the Waylors. All those years seasoned in the honky tonks, they could play through anything and not miss a beat. The new kids on the charts today have never had to do that; they need the fireworks and gimmicks, poor things.
@NokomisWaymore Couldn't agree with you any more. My God, was Waylong great or not? You're right, there will never be another. Ralph Mooney on the steel is simply awesome. I want them back, by the way is Nokomis in Illinois?
There are none. Cause when God made Waylon, He said, "We're only doing this once." And when God took Waylon, He said to all of us, "Sorry, guys, but we need an Outlaw up here. We'll save you a seat." This bullshit so-called "country" music today is sickening. Only the few remaining of the old guard are carrying on the real tradition. When they're gone, that's it.
I stand corrected - anything connected with Hank 1 and Hank 2 gets my approval. Hell, I'd approve of a lawn mower if, say, Hank 1 rode it drunk into town.
Help! I have a severe addiction to Waylon. It is affecting my work and sleep. I thought I had kicked it some years back when other Waylon addicts stole all my CDs. Word of advice: never let people sample your Waylon. Before trying Waylon, they may laugh. But, after a couple of try's they most likely will develop a severe Waylon addiction of their own and steal your Waylon stash. This happened to me and I kicked my addiction, but now that I have found these youtube Vids my life is over!
Well, you got it GANNO, what a smile, what a voice. I saw him in concert and he was just the best and I have seen a lot of concerts. God, he was great and yeah, the smile does make me weak kneed and I'm 60 years old.
I tell you Everyone! Waylon Jennings was not only a great singer of Country Music, but so Good Looking, Sexy and when he smiled like he did (c,mon you women) it was enough to make your knees weak! Loved you Waylon. R.I P.
Yeah I just don't get it...Do you think they even know their music is mediocre? Or perhaps they don't care and are just in it for the moolah, and sacrifice taste and style just to get on the charts...
who the hell are rascal flats. Waylon his the man and true country what has happend to todays music.f-ing bullshit.country music died years ago.

Shooter resembles his father some physically, and you're right-he does his father proud.
rachel8375 2 years ago
shooter does this song...he may not look like his father. he might not have that trademark deeeep voice. but he's something special in his own right..and pays a deep tribute to his father..unlike second generations stars try to shake the image of their famous fathers..shooter jennings loved his daddy and wont let the world forget his music...shame nashville and country radio seem to ignore him completely..but his fan base is getting pretty huge.God bless'em

Long live Waylon and Ralph Mooney.
ano1ridesthe19 2 years ago 11
If you think about this entire concert at the Opry, Waylon sure stuck it to them...
He comes out to this song "Are you ready for the country, are you ready for me?" Knowing damn well they were not ready for him lol...
And he finishes it in classic Outlaw fashion with "are you sure Hank done it this way?"...
pretty much kickin the Opry tradition right square in the ass, with a, "Get the F@#$k OUTTA MY WAY"."
Waylon Jennings,
Greatest of all time!

NokomisWaymore 2 years ago 66

GymFloozie 2 years ago 23
What about Hank 3? That's a motherfucker STEEPED in tradition...He's legacy. I'd like to think Waylon would approve.
ctzntoxie13 2 years ago

Yep, most of them aren't worthy to mow the grass around Waylon's grave, much less call themselves country music stars.

Yeah I just don't get it...Do you think they even know their music is mediocre? Or perhaps they don't care and are just in it for the moolah, and sacrifice taste and style just to get on the charts...
