i live in pittsburg, california but i usually fish out in the san francisco bay and and out at the pittsburg marina for sturgeon sting rays striped bass and king fish. are there any tarpon fish out in the san francisco bay? i'd like to go fishing for tarpon its been my life long dream to go tarpon fishing but i dnt think we can afford the trip can you guys hep us out?
@captchancey NICE BUT THE ONLY BIGGEST FISH IVE EVER CAUGHT IS 45 STRIPED BASS WHEN I WAS 12 IM ALREADY 14 THOUGH, BUT THE BIGGEST STURGEON IVE CAUGHT HAS BEEN 30 INCHES. OH..AND I ALSO FISH FOR LEOPARD SHARKS AND FLOUNDER.
i remember tred barta fishing for tarpon on tv when i was about five. ever since i always wanted to catch one. but i live in delaware where tarpon are non-existant. :/
catfish? i ve never heard of using catfish as bait. could i use any catfish and just cut it up to use as bait? and just use the head and tail, or will strips work too? and i fish for tarpon in the lake in my backyard, so should a throw it out on a float?
Some do WHEN they are Gut hooked. But with today's circle hooks, it is virtually eliminated. When hooks are left in the mouth, it simply rust off within a few days in saltwater or a few weeks in freshwater. In any case, the hook is better left in when the angler cannot get it out safety from the fish without injuring or killing the fish.
Okay heres the last comment :P So my dad has I think 80 pound test line and a 200 leader. And he was using a 4 inch mullet for bait. After like 30 seconds the line just snaps and all 4 men fall all back on the ground. Man I was sitting there laughing my ass off :P So we dont know what it was but all we now it was nothing normal at all. Because the pole is around 8 feet above the water. And It was 1 foot away from touching the water. So Yeah it was a crazy experience.
But my dad dad did not make it in enough time to my dads friend Jason, hes a crazy fisherman so he picks that pole up and immediately he almost gets pulled off the pier. So im sitting there just staring at 4 guys trying to manhandle this one pole. so then my dads like hurry thumb it. But Jason does not know that for ulua poles he has to hold the reel on its side not push on the line. But then you know what happens he thumbs the line. In result he had a blister bigger the size of his own thumb.
Oh my god. You guys must like catch everything. Im actually starting back up to fish again, family moved back to Hawaii and in the 4th week of fishing my dad caught a 100-150 pound 6ft' black tip or whatever shark. Dont really know the names of all the reels & rods. Because Im only 13, but Im trying to start the Deep sea reels Like you guys have. Ive never used one, No experience. But otherwise, any advice? Because were going pier fishing in a few days. It would be great for some tips. Thanks.
Okay I will go search that brand up. If there's no problem I might want to ask a few more questions because I could not get everything in that last text. :P Okay I really want to pull up my first baby shark soon. Because all I can get is bonefish. Ive got a 23in 6 pounder and a 24in 8 pounder. So yeah And now for the questions. What pound test? What size hook? What pound test leader..? ( If needed ) And What size reel. My dad thinks it would be good to start off on a 2/0 ( I believe )
You can land the smaller sharks on Redfish tackle. A 2/0 circle hook works great, 20 pound test suffix braided line, 40 pound leader with a little bit of light wire.
Okay thanks alot Ive always had a 20 pound test with a 40 lead so im good to go with that
And Ive actually started to use live bait with circle hooks. But I dont know exactly know what size they were so yeah. But thanks alot Ive been getting a lot of bites on our last trip.
Oh man my dad almost caught a MONSTER. At first it was just a little ring on his 13 foot ulua pole. So I was like hey dad, your pole is going o- then the line just starts SCREAMING. Im like wow I think you hooked Moby Dicko_o
what is the line capacity on those avets you were using? i use a penn 330gt2 on an 8 ft. star rod, holds 500-600 yards of 80 lb braid..i need alot of line capacity because i fish for tarpon on the beach from shore and they can peel off 100 yards of line real quick.
Yeah, if you are in a boat, line capacity isn't as big an issue so you don't have to use quite as heavy tackle as i do..I do get a few sharks because I fish cut baits for tarpon, but in my experience the sharks usually give up easier..i like 80-100 lb braid and 250 lb mono leader to muscle the tarpon in as fast as possible so he does better after release, and you don't have to revive them as much this way..they are usually ready to go once you guide them along
Captain, I'm thinking about an LX on an 8 ft MH star rod..do you think this setup would balance? How's the castability with avets? I swim my bait out 100 yards or so from the beach, if I can approach 60 on a cast I believe that would be enough..I use cut baits 5-8 oz . I was maybe even thinking of getting a used avet if the prices are out of my range. I was very curious about how they cast because I have to swim out pretty far to get takes consistently, and you seem to really like avets.
i use catfish tails alot, i've done pretty good on them...i put a 7/0 circle hook in the tail end, it holds better. sometimes i cut the tail fin off to keep it from spinning in the tide. do a 5 count and let him eat it..then point your rod at the fish and reel fast, you should be able to get him in a soft spot, tarpon only have 3 soft spots on the mouth, so make sure your hook is extremely sharp
I am really enjoying this show and you really look like you are enjoying yourself. I love to fish but don't get to do so very often. You catch HUGE fish. Good job.
I found your show on youtube and now Im hooked (punny huh?) Anyway, I grew up in Florida and fished many of the same places you do. Never caught anything remotely as big as you do on the show. I live in Illinois now and your show made me homesick. Awesome show, best Ive seen! Watch it every night now on youtube. Yeah, a girl addicted to "Chew On This"!! Keep it coming!
Thank you very much for watching and responding to the show. Believe it or not: of the nearly 4 million viewers Chew On This has about 20% is female. We love to have you lady's aboard.

Hey Capt. Love your video's but I have some questions. Im coming down in May to Tarpon fish but have been reading that making them bite is really hard because they are spawning. Do you have any tips? Id like to really land one.
You will just have to put your time in. They tend to eat when they want to. Sometimes crabs are the best other times cut bait on the bottom is the best. It all varies.
The Blue Marlin fishing is not really available on the West Coast of Florida feasibly. We tried to catch one in a show off the coast of Texas but only ended up with a bunch of Wahoo. LOL

Dude ur vids are awesome! I'm thirteen and live in Iowa but i love FLORIDA's fishing so much i have such a passion and your vids are inspireing to me! I'm going to the Marathon Key this spring break and i'm fishing EVERY DAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I love your show I watch it right here on youtube all the time. My favorite episodes are the Goliath Challenge ones. I live in Manatee county and I never see the show on TV can you please tell me when and what chanell I can find your show. Thanks
Right now you can only catch it in SW Florida on cable. We are working to find a large network to run with next. Keep in touch and there should be some new info before long.
Captain ben, your videos are amazing. If i had the money and wasn't going back to school soon, i'd be down there in a heartbeat. betweet tarpon, sharks, snook, and goliaths, you must have trouble deciding when to leave the water.

You can try the big Tsunami and Storm swim baits. A lot of our guys really like them over here.

whats the crack with leaving the hook in the black tip.
Thats not nice
Xiacium 4 years ago
The hooks typically rust out almost overnight. It is better to leave a hook in than to tear the fishes jaw up. Thanks for watching.
