@Lcguy87 Nice! I'm picking up a '71 cutlass s white with brown interior this month. It's clean as f*ck and mostly original minus a cd player. Gotta love the fastback olds :)
There is a petition on change.org that I've started after i seen how that lady on the early show stopped the banks from charging that 5 dollar fee, and its purpose is to hopefully get GM to bring back olds. The classics too! even though it's been almost 8 years, it's never too late. change.org/petitions/general-motors-bring-back-oldsmobile the link isn't working for some reason, you'll just have to look for it on change.org
Ohh, man... what i would give for that green cutlass! c'mon GM, start remanufacturing these great cars. People WILL buy them! and don't give me crap about safety isues. If i get run over or die in a car wreck i want it to be in one of these not a f**ing prius!
@autobahn101driversed Hmmm does that mean I need to stop flogging the dolphin to all these hot 70s babes in Oldsmobiles' videos?...Be real, the hot female models in these ads WAS selling sex, to American males...and it worked to perfection
That's such a beautiful car, when I look at this commercial & compare them to the new commercials I am disgusted that our country lost our pride in everything especially cars, now all dealerships want to do is steal customer's money & give us these fiberglass pieces of shit. What ever happened to the fine automobiles with power, shapes & different style? I miss these old cars :(
Just for yuks, walk into a local dealership tomorrow and tell the fine folks there you're in the market for a "hardtop." Just to see what happens.
Sadly, Oldsmobile was indeed " a step ahead" in terms of automakers going El Foldo -- did so back in the relatively go-go days at the turn of the 21st century.
Just for yuks, pretend its 1971 all over again & tell the dealer you're looking for a car that comes equipped with "the works". You know, like a passenger-side side mirror & rear defrost & carpeted flooring & a tilt steering wheel. Oh!, and a radio that comes equipped with FM tuning. Tell him you also want something in a nice two-tone paint job! And it must be rust-proofed & has a full-size spare tire in the trunk! And then tell him your wife insists that the car come with AC!
@unconventionalmeans Then sign the papers, drive it off the lot and down to the filling station. Wait for the attendant to come out so you can hand him a five and say "Fill 'er up with Ethyl!"
Yeah, and the tell the attendant to check the air pressure in your Goodyear Polyglas tires--when he's done wiping the windshield & checking the oil level, that is. And meanwhile, you're busy tapping your fingertips on the steering wheel while listening to Cher's latest hit "Gypsies, Tramps, and Thieves" as it comes crackling thru the AM airwaves. Oh!, and your wife? Well, she's inside the filling station getting you that ice cold tall boy size can of Schlitz Beer you wanted.
The Cutlass Supreme roofline differs from 70-72 Cutlass S and 442. The Cutlass S and 442 have the same roofline as your Buick but the Cutlass Supreme has a roofline like the 70-72 Monte Carlo and Grand Prix. 2008ljr was saying Buick should have made a roofline like that. 73 was the first year of the Colonade. They were suppose to be in 72 but thankfully a GM strike delayed them.
Olds V8s ran cleaner emissions than others. This was more evident in the late 70s when 403 Olds V8 engines were mandatory in California 77-79 Pontiac Trans Ams and Formula Firebirds when the 400 Pontiac was available elsewhere. Another example was the 307 Olds in the 80s continuing to pass emissions with a carb and never converting to a more efficient fuel injection like Chevy. 307 V8 Olds lasted until 1990 with carbs making it the last GM carb engine.
The '71 Cutlass Supreme 2-door hardtop was one of GMs bet looking cars for 1971.The convertible model was a great looking car that was discontinued after the 1972 model year. The 4-door pillarless hardtop was also a very attractive car.
Buick was foolish not to have the 71 Skylark in a 2-door hardtop like the supreme. They did have it until 73 when the new model came out and it was a Regal.
High end cars like Mercedes and Bentley still make two-door hardtops. GM quit making them due to the the added cost. The prototype of the new Camaro was a hardtop but the production model will have fixed rear quarter windows-due to the expense.
In 1972 I bought a 1971 Cutlass Supreme with 5000 miles on it for 2000 dollars. Mint green with a black vinyl top, 350 engine and and 8 track. Gotta go. I'm tearing up , just thinking about it.
I never noticed what you are talking about un this video but what I can tell you is the difference between a hardtop and a sedan on these old cars 72 and earlier is a hardtop does not have the metal frame around the door class whether it be a 2 or 4 door. Hardtops are kinda a thing of the past. All cars today have the metal frame around the glass making them sedans and not hardtops.
Did you know that the ONLY reason they stopped making hardtops was the same reason they stopped making convertibles in 1976? The industry heard that the Feds MIGHT pass tough rollover standards and that's why they halted production. The Feds never came thru on that. The initial "downsizing" program was basically weight reduction by cheating on the inner structure, resulting in cars that would basically collapse in minor impacts without a centerpost structure - so they abandoned hardtops.
Convertibles were always exempt from rollover requirements..they stopped making them because people stopped buying them...noisier muscle engines, high speed freeways, long hairstyles, 60s value changes, A/C, stereo all conspired to the convertible's decline..mfrs were crunched for cash in the early 70s due to a recession and union demands for higher wages ('72 strike) so they cut where they could..hardtops gave way to opera windows which were cheaper too..A/C made hardtops less practical..
I remember the big boo-hoo-hoo over the "last american convert - Eldorado '76". Do you remember the commercial showing the man removing the battery after putting it up on blocks in his climate-controlled garage? It was tauted as an investment guaranteed to explode in value. What a scam that was! I do remember the Prez of GM and Motor Trend saying that one of the main reasons for the demise of the convert was the anticipated new federal rollover standards and that converts were included.
I remember the fanfare for the last Eldo 76convert..for three years these cars were resold for as much as $40k..this was '79when you could have bought a starter house for that, even in Calif..it collapsed in '82 when Chrysler brought back the conv..big hoopla over that too..Brooke Shields got the first one they built..it was a misconception that rollover stds were responsible; they weren't..car mfrs were cutting wherever sales dropped..conv and hiperf were out..will they do the same now?? Sad..
Oh, that's not a post. That's simply a piece of metal trim that holds a piece of rubber weatherstrip. That way, the front door glass always had a "clean" look to it when you opened the door with the glass full/part up. I think it would have been better to have used a flat-black metal strip, to make it more "invisible".
Fisher made all GM bodies for years. I dont know if they still do. On any GM car from the 60s and 70s you can open the door and it says Fisher on the sill plate.
Didn't some of the GM cars also have the Fisher name on the sill plate in the early 80's too?. Great collection of commercials by the way! Thanks for posting these.
I think the 71 vinyl material is more prone to this as Ive noticed it on at least two 71 Ive owned. Ive found the 71 seat rips to be razor sharp. The 72s seem to use a thicker softer vinyl thats not as bad although it rips as easily.
I absolutely loved the sound of Oldsmobile's exhaust system over the other GM equals...something in their engines gave a very distinct rumble at the tailpipe. I still have my 1972 Buick Skylark Convertible that I bought used in 1975 for my college days...it's orange flame metallic with white interior and top and some people think it's a Cutlass - but it doesn't sound like a Cutlass!
My grandmother had a '71 Cutlass Supreme: "bittersweet" (metallic dark orange) with a white interior, white vinyl top, & whitewalls with hubcaps. Sometime in the late-70s she tired of the orange & had it painted banana yellow. It didn't look bad in the yellow but I liked the bittersweet better. She eventually traded it in for a lowly 4-cyl '80 Mustang hatchback.
