OPPOSSUMS ARE ANCIENT ANIMALS THAT HAVE BEEN ON EARTH LONGER THAN HUMANS. THEY ARE SURVIVORS AND WE SHOULD GIVE THEM SOME RESPECT BCUZ THEIR GENES MAY GIVE US SOME CURES.
Opossum don't leave Moms pouch until about age 3-4 months, but they do not travel without her for another 2 or so months. Nevertheless, Opossums are GREAT marsupials and very necessary for the environment. They've been around since the dinosaur age. They are solitary, omnivorous animals that are VERY friendly when raised from infancy. They'll hiss and show teeth but they are NOT good at protecting themselves unfortunately, which is why you don't see too many now days. :o(
I just uploaded a video of a opossum on my back patio. Mine is about the size yours was. According to one of your commenters, it's not a baby. lol. Well, I can't help but to feel like it is. It's funny how they're not as skidish as the older opossums are.
It was the first baby opossum I had ever seen. I was concerned about too much interaction and definitely didn't want to get our scent on it's fur. If I had know the mother might abondon it, I would have raised it myself :)
That's the first one I've seen that close. He wasn't afraid of anything. Keeping the kids from picking him up was the hard part. Thanks~ I'm a big fan of your Channel!
A little cutie indeed. Every now and then I have them cross my path while running. About two years ago, when it was very dark on the trail I was running on, a mother and baby crossed five feet in front of me. Mom hissed slightly and they scurried off. Interesting animals.
Awesome opossum! I also love your Pembroke Welsh Corgi, Molly--she's beautiful! My mom had a corgi, Ben, who lived to be over 16 yrs. old--I pray Molly will have a long life--looks like she's having a fun, interesting time! God's blessings for sharing this bit of God's creation.
ha oppusums r cool, whe my cousin and i went backpacking by ourselves fo r the first time (im only 13 and he's 14) we saw a opssums. it was th emiddle of the nogh tand we heard something so i shined my surefire over and a saw a oppusum starign at us. but it was an older one, and it was super cranky
Ah, a Cutie... have met up with quite a few of those critters. They are so curious. Would find them in the barn and they'd scare the crap out of me, till I figured out what it was. Those beady little eyes, lol.
Also, I had to chase one out of the front lobby of our company. It must have been sick.
Thanks so much for sharing. (Used to have a Pembroke Welsh Corgi when I was a kid. Great dog.)
I've seen a million Opossums in my lifetime and most of those "road kill" but never a little baby. I wanted to keep him.... but then I would have had to feed him!
Although it is more common to see them at night, they will come out during the day to seek food if scarce, as well as being disturbed by something from it's nesting place. :)
They're plentiful here in NC, but not during the day and a baby alone :) Of course most of the Opossum seen here are "Road Kill"! LOL! Thanks for the post.
What a neat experience for the kids. I haven't had the opportunity to speak about wildlife on youtube yet, but in my early 20's I went to school to become a wildlife trainer. I worked and trained w/ large cats. (lions, leopards, cougars, etc..) I also worked w/ birds of prey, primates, reptiles (which I didn't care much for lol, I could have done w/out the snakes! ) I miss it a lot, but have my family to train up now. Maybe 1 day, Lord willing, here or in heaven I will get back to my passion.

Man, he's cute. My mom has raised orphaned possums for a local environmental center, then releases them. Great video.

That's a great story about possums. This little guy showed no fear. I wanted to pick him up but was afraid his mother might not take him back.

That's awsome. I have never seen an opposum in the wild.

the little feller could probably sense no real danger from you and your kind kin. all animals should be as free as all men, the way God intended it.

It was hard not picking him up and making it a pet.... but you're right, he has a right to be free. Excellent point.

LOL! That's why I thought this would be interesting. I've seen many dead Opossums and very few live ones :) Thanks for the post.

Cute little thing. I haven't ever seen one before. Probably because of the army of nut-throwing squirrels in our back yard lol.

I was telling my dad and he said every oppossum he'd ever encountered attacked him.
I refrained from asking anymore, I guessed bad experiences.

I had my eye out for it's mother... this little guy was really gentle but he's grow into a big ugly oposum :)

Possums aren't rare in northern California. They're every where at night. I've never see them in the day time tho.
