  • It´s really a great song and it´s a kind of raw and honest garage rock from the 60s. My hobby is to rediscover all those great bands that didn´t "broke through" during this period. Listen (Youtube) for example to:

THE ZETTLERS and their versions of "Skinnie Minnie" and "Beautiful Delilah".

Really f....g good with a bloody driving beat.

THE GOLLIWOGS and the song "Tell me". Check up the singer...Yes, it´s him!!!

  • No reasonable human being (even artists) would seriously date a fangirl. If I were in the crowd back then I would slap a few of those screaming.

  • the talent still exists, but the record companies and radio stations are unimaginative, conservative and corrupt.

there is plenty of great music around today, you just have to work a bit harder to find it. try going to a local show!

  • what happened to talent like this? I haven't turned on the radio in months.

  • I really believe these guys were good. Far better than anything I could've done. I've always liked that "rough Edged" live sound. Indeed, they may not have been in perfect vocal tune for a highly skilled, classically trained musician. However, this is Rock-N-Roll after all. The Guitar, Bass, and Drums sound great to me. I liked how "Moulty" just took to the Drum kit with a Jolly seeming "Take me or leave me" attitude. Many of us still prefer to take him! Thanks for the excellent post!

  • They were singing out of tune!

  • So many good groups out here that I never heard before - thanks for the posts.

  • My band Cloud was part of that music scene in those days. Let me make it clear in no uncertain terms: The Barbarians were the REAL DEAL...........they were not imitation.........Jeff Morris, lead guitar was an amzaing player..........the band was crisp, tight, loud and full on Rock N Roll.....and yes Moulty was a really nice guy.

    Douglas G..............

  • @douglasg1231 Hey Doug... just a hello from someone who was around back then. Loved the Barbarians. The Tea Party was a weekly haunt for me from '67 to '69 so I'm sure I caught your band a few times. I think you once played with the Ill Wind, who were my favorite local band... kind of followed them around like a groupie. Still hope to meet Conny some day and let her know how much pleasure their album has given me... still play it to this day.

  • this is a really good song haha

  • it is him ... he avatar's when he overindulges in drugs

  • I'd love to contact Mr. Moulton and just say thanks. This song is a perfect example of that Golden Sound from way back. Good chords, vocals, and, of course, good drumming. If you're reading this Moulty, know that you guys were awesome and it's a damn shame someone didn't promote you a little more. They were sitting on top of a Gold mine and didn't see it.

  • Is this the original song? I got a version by The Untamed Youth and i only knew this one before i saw that video.(I'm 24...)

    Really cool...

  • @baltrico Well, it was recorded in the mid 60's by the Barbarians..so I would say ..YES!

  • When these guys hit the air on this Shindig show, the drummer had what was the beginning of the really long hair..............it was no longer just the Beatle Haircut, the drummer was really pushing the edge, that you could go further than just Beatle haircut and my Mom simply could not believe that a man would have his hair 'that long'.

The drummer has only 1 hand. His other hand was a 'hook'. Sorry if I am politically incorrect in that description, but he was a hell of a drummer.

  • What show was this taken from???

Looks like the TAMI show or Shindig.

  • They sound like a cross between the Kinks and the Bealtes.I think if the Kinks would have merged with the Beatles they would have sound like these guys.

  • this is off the hook for 1964. Too bad they didn't perform this on the T.A.M.i. who, well at least it wasn't on the DVD. thanks for posting

  • That drummer looks like he traveled back in time from the 90s

  • Wow. Watch out Beetle's!

  • Some excellent minor chords. Great song.

  • And Moulty looks like Syd Barrett.

  • that looks like keith moon singing

  • Comment removed

  • Hey - it was the first album I bought as a kid, for the song, "Are You A Boy Or Are You A Girl". Lol. I later met a guy named Herbie Edwards from P-Town and he said he played backup for them. Herbie is a fantastic guitarist. Anyone know him? I am friends with his sister Flo.

  • This live version is so much better than the B-side studio version of the song. This clip shows the bands raw energy! It really kicks ass! Thanks for posting.

  • Moulty kicked major ass 1:58!

  • We used to hang outside the Atlantic House in P-town and listen to these guys and also the P-town Jug Band at the Surf Club. The good old days.

  • its still the beatles that influenced them all

  • Moulty own's a drycleaners in Mass now. I'm friends with his son. I was his first girlfriend. :)

  • Moulty's first girlfriend or his son?

  • @cathii316

Hey Cathi...My dad was their manager...Buddy Friedlander...I was in the studio when they recorded Are You A boy...I think I was 15 back then...Its great to hear theyre still alive and well...

  • this isso gooood ! girls dancing ballet on garage

  • A fine group that should have been more than a regional success. Moulty! don't turn away.

  • Hobbits? With shoes? Wha?!?

  • Thanks for posting this 1964 song. Yes they were a 'one trick pony' with 'Are You A Boy Or Are You A Girl'-1965 but it was good to see this video.

  • You've got to understand how much it means to me to see this. Very much appreciated!

  • What ever happend to Moulty, anyway. Does anybody know?

  • Still plays drums, he has a "New Barbarians" group with his son. Great guy, lives in the Southshore area.

  • Great to hear. Gives me hope that I might still get to see Moulty perform in person. What I'd love to see. Moulty is near the tops of my favorite drummers of all time. I think ahead of him is only Cream's Ginger Baker & the Who's late great Keith Moon.

  • I absolutely cannot believe this. I had a crush on Moulty with I was a teenager. I loved his hook. I saw them play. I believe they, or at least Moulty, were from Provinetown, MA, my old stompting grounds in the 60s. I grew up in MA near the Cape.

  • Girls went crazy over anything with a guitar back then. ... not now.

  • Moulty & Co. Great! I had Moulty on my r&r talk show, Talk N Roll 4 or so years ago. A great guy with great stories to tell. The Song, Moulty was NOT backed by the Barbarians but it WAS backed by The Band! Robbie,Leon, etc in NYC. A fun fact.

  • Keith Moon sings the Beatles lol. I've heard of these guys & it's now nice to know how they sound. They sound alot like the Beatles. Pretty cool stuff here...

  • Excellent group for the times. I believe that they were from Mass, not far from Cape Cod. This song should have been a big hit and the flip side was also very good. The group recorded with small record label companies without much promotion (Joy and Laurie Records) & with even poorer production. While they never got the recognition that they deserved the Barbarians still shine as one of the outstanding groups of the 1960's. Sadly they never made much money from their rock ventures

  • rofl, they look like they are impersonating the early Beatles.

  • I love the drummer's prosthetic claw hand!

  • This Guys were as Good as the DC5 ,Kinks,or BEATLES!!!!!

    They sound great!!

  • Har har har. The guy on the far right looks like he's playing a tennis racket. What exactly is that thing anyway? An electric Bouzouki?

  • Looks like a Danelectro "Bellzouki" 12-string. If you Google it you'll find some info on 'em. The "Bell" part of the name comes from creator Vinnie Bell.

  • great song !!

  • singer looks like keith moon, lol

  • Yes, he also has a face like a moon too !!

  • A batida desta música lembra um pouco o "I feel fine" dos Beatles, mesmo assim é uma excelente beat music desta banda de garagem dos sixties, valeu!

  • NUGGETS <3

  • inspired by the beatles much? this is a great group! "are you a boy or are you a girl" is their best!

  • Hey guys, thanks for all the good memories, Hey Moulty it's me Wally ha,ha,

  • Hey guys, this brings back a lot of good memories, thanks!! Hey Moulty it's me Wally, ha,ha.

  • @gojuhall

Hi Wally, I remember you from the Columbus Ave. days 1967- 1968 when the Barbarians became the Black Pearl. I used to live with Joe L. on the top floor of the brownstone. You guys were all taking lessons at the Karate studio across the street. I took my son by the old place. The recording studio is is a chiropractic office. I remember when Van Morrison used to rehearse there, and the Hallucinations (J.Geils Band). Great times!

  • too cool' member when their hair was considered radically long? Are you a boy or are you a girl was terrific and the drummer is an inspiration to us all.

  • Great song and performance (for the times) by an unheralded but regionally known group. Bad management, record label and other things held these guys back. Had they had the promotion that they deserved they would have been highly successful

  • i agree.
