@mikedrummer00 Lake's performance of this song isn't exactly bad, but it's somewhat deadpan without as emotion. This cover summons up something other than than the jaded attitude of the original, so it's quite appropriate to put something deeper and more emotional into it. Bono is a superior singer to Lake in general, too, most definitely in this song.
GREG LAKE'S version will forever be my fav' version. I f@@kin HATE this version. Where is the power, where is the passion. And Bono..... make a pis@in effort. Embarces version was good, Greg Lake version my fav' xmas song ever but this one.... Not for me sorry..... Dont like it one little bit. Dont bother Bono!!!!!!!!
Fantastic. Loving The Edge's work on this, too. No idea why people feel the need to watch this if they prefer the original version. I like both of them. Merry Christmas :)

Most overrated band in the world...ruins a great Christmas song...He's diction is all wrong ..Edge. minimalism is another word for plain. No need to bother..just listen to Greg's version.
Gets no better than U2. My favorite band hands down.
I just finished my new Christmas song, Christmas Not The Same-A little Electro-R-n-B with a dash of Christmas High Fructose Corn Syrup......on my channel. Bless, KIA MUZE :-)
normally I find bono's ultra affected phrasing and voice utterly obnoxious and his lyrics no matter how profound in subject to also be insipid as to content. But, obviously I had just been waiting to hear him the right vehicle. thank you Greg Lake The Edge is awesome, same as always, (-:
@Akron162 As you said he's not dead here's what he said about U2 covering the song:
"The guitar part is very clever and the vocal, as always with Bono, sounds sincere. That is the mark of a great singer.
Well done chaps! It is great to see the song serving such a worthy cause"
So on one hand you have the biggest band on the planet and on the other you have the guy who wrote the song praising what they did so how about you tell me why anyone should give a shit what you think?
@DanotheSnitch i don't give a shit if anyone gives a shit of what i say, i just say it because is may opinion ad i can say it. Anyway, u2 has allways been terribly overrated, and this version still sucks.
@funk7000 He's been singing a little flat lately. Does this mean that U2 doesn't allow auto-tune? I think I'd rather have a slightly flat singer than a CD treated with auto-tune.
I love Greg Lake and Peter Sinfield - and I like U2's cover. It's not necessary to praise the originators by despising the current interpretation. Most everything Bono touches turns to some precious metal. Why not a great song from ELP's great catalog?
I feel I am not alone in thinking this band nowadays has a negative midas touch - everything since Actung baby has been a pile of Irish shit - this butchered song being no exception.
Sorry, Bono and U2 -- no one can top the Original from Greg Lake and Emerson, Lake and Palmer . . . although Sarah Brightman's version does give the song a serious run for the money, IMHO.
Pretty awesome! Still prefer Greg Lake's version cuz it's the original and his voice suits it better; But I DO love the guitar work from The Edge on this one!
It's funny how everyone says it's not as good as the original one. Well - yes i am a big U2 fan, but I don't really like the original one, but Bono and Edge make this magic..
first time I have ever seen or heard this cover ... true nothing like Greg Lake at all.. but I got the same goosebumps I always get every single time I hear this song!!

@GonzaU2 I love the dotted 8th note delay setting. Its amazing! A 12 string Rickenbacker and a Vox AC30 are a beautiful combination. The shimmer effect makes it even more amazing.
This man Bono was on Grafton street December 24 2009 with the people of Dublin before spending the night with his family.... Is there any other frontman that would be doing something like that on Christmas eve or any other day for that matter.. Ive met Bono many times and he has been more than a gentleman
WOW this is absolutely amazing. such a pretty song thats even better from bono's voice. i watched this several times and each time it was amazing. They should put out a christmas CD on year.
Well, after listening to this song 4 or 5 times now, I think the band still sounds great, but it may be time for Bono to change his name to "Meh Vox".
Also, interesting that he changed the lyrics from, "'til I believed," to "but I believed". Way to betray the song.
Yawn. U2 continues their slow march into boring, adult contemporary music. Remember when U2 actually made "cool" music". I hope this isn't on the new album
