Radu Lupu plays Schumann's Piano Concerto 1st Movement

Lupu is incredible! You really hear Schumann in his interpretation. I find it so often that behind a dazzling technique and high quality of sound there isn't any space left for the composer himself. And yet, I think, it is vital not to separate the piece from its composer, especially when it comes to such composers as Schumann, Chopin or Rachmaninoff.

I used not to be a big fan of Schumann piano concerto, but this recording is.... no words...

@UlfenDaddy I agree...there is room on this planet for many great pianists and many different styles. If we all can"t afford to fly to Paris to see Argerich should we sit at home and listen to no one...what a terrible thought! I have many "favorites" and it is fun comparing styles and interpretations!

I've long felt Radu Lupu was sadly under-rated, considering his brilliance and pure musicianship. He was an associate of my most formative teacher (they were acquainted from the Academy in Bucharest,) and I was privileged to meet him a number of times. I also gladly attended quite a few of his concerts and recitals, including a Mozart performace with the Detroit Symphony. Later that night we had the Schumann concerto at Fedora's, Lupu on solo and she and I doing accompaniment 4-hands.

who can say, at this level, if one pianist is better than another...it is ones own preference that matters! That being said, I agree with arturon111, for this particular concert I prefer Arrau. The '63 recording on you tube is amazing. Arrau

creates an emotional masterpiece by caressing the music...not by overpowering the piece! In addition, the balance between the piano and orchestra is perfect...you can easily hear each note of the piano through the entire concerto!

@mrushing255 That is *THE* point most commentators in Y-T just don't get. The fact that a particular artist/performance moves you doesn't make that "the greatest ever." The whole point of musical Art is there are differing ways of rendering, enlivening and even of Hearing the same works under differing circumstances. This is a beautiful, Great performace; it's not my favorite and I can think of 4-5 others significantly "better" in some regards. That detracts NOTHING from Lupu and his artistry.

@FeryalFun ; i dont think the same, Arrau is the best overall interpreter of Schumann, Beethoven, Brahms, Chopin and Liszt in my opinion

Whoa, this is superb!! I like this recording a whole lot, too.

Lupu is a great pianist, and even more so in live performance. I have a tape of him playing the Brahms D-minor Concerto in a 1987 concert with Previn/LA Phil. Amazing, and in another league (or two) from his studio recording of the same. One of my very favorites.
