One would think that the word Assassin comes from this word Yassassin. But it's actually from the arabic/persian Hashashin, although I guess the word could've visited Turkey before continuing to the western world.
Scoobydoonut, I can assure that Americans heard Lodger in 1979. I'm one of them. I remember waiting for it to come out.
I don't think people knew what to think of it in 1979 though. It's not New Wave like Low or Heroes. It's sure not disco and even the Grateful Dead was doing disco in 1979. So what is it? It's Bowie.
What's remarkable about it is the wall of obscure growls, pulses, throbs and sustained whirling in the background on all of the track. Certainly some of this is Eno.
I'm sorry but this man's back catalogue has to, just HAS. TO. Be one of the best. I swear that THIS song Yassassin is one of the best songs that the Bow-Bow has ever done! Praise God!! Hallelujah!
trivia - all songs on the lodger album follow the same chord progression - bowie has stated so publicly! you can hear it if you strap on your ears. sly arranger and melodysmith he.
I just bought this album yesterday and it was the first time I've heard this song, but it's just great. I've never heard anything quite like it. I just can't resist the beat. It's so addictive.
@Scoobydoonut Wow..its Surreal hearing all these people saying they just heard this..Americans really do live in a bubble..this Album we listened to in high school, but back then you were a freak, you were a fag, you were trashed for liking this music..all the best!
Smart track from a smart album!!!

@vorkutaman I thought it might be a British thing because there's a Hitchcock film called The Lodger.

@gloiven I don't think so.
'Fantastic Voyage' and 'Boys Keep Swinging' do but as that's all.
The chorus of 'Move On' is 'All The Young Dudes' played backwards.

@gloiven I thought it was just Boys keep Swinging and Fantastic voyage that had the same chord progression, but I only know that from wikipedia....
