This is really good early 80's New Wavey rock. I thought it was a joke when I first heard it on the video of the TV show (which I assume is a lip synch to the studio version), but the bass line really caught my ear. Now, listening to this, I am hearing great guitar, drums, and keyboards.
Good gravy, these guys need to do a reunion tour of some sort. I'm far from religious, but this song is so ridiculously catchy and fun; you'd have to be some sort of complete cunt to not totally love it.
The concert was in December 1983 at Xaverian High School auditorium (in Brooklyn, NY) before about 1200 fans. The bass I'm using was actually the bass I used on the recording; a Fender Precision Elite. The bass on the TV lip-sync was a Steinberger knock-off, a Kramer. It sounded like crap live. I used it for the TV taping because it looked cool. I dumped it immediately after.
So cool...Im the bass player for "88Days"..I came across this video by mistake...I really didnt know what to think whil watching this video. My 3 year old and 9 year old daughters walked up and started singing along and then asked me to play it again. So the song must be good ! They are the best judges..I use them to judge our tunes all the time.
I respect the Sonseed. But seriously, were there enough people that were into local Christian Ska in 1983 that they needed to have a "Farewell Concert"? Seriously? BTW, this fucking rocks.
This is seriously the funniest thing I have come across in ages. I thought the other TV version was a pisstake but they are for real! I think that makes it even funnier!
One think that would make this better, is if the guitar player, was all smashed, and went on a drunk rant before punching that bass player in his happy mouth. Followed shortly with a good power vomit on the keyboard chick.
I wish sonseed would reform, best band ever. Did they have another song? What are the guys up to now? Probably living on royalties on some Island. God bless them.
Good guess! Back then Scott Muni (a DJ on WNEW-FM in NY) used to have a daily segment called "Things From England" where he played tracks from imports from relatively unknown bands. I can't remember the song or the band but yes, I was impressed by a particular piece heard on tht show.
It teeters just on the edge of B52s.

jadaveg 2 years ago
If it is lip-synched they did a really good job, both with muddying up the audio quality and with the instruments ,etc. I vote real.
cllewis1 2 years ago
Definitely not lip syncing. You can see that what they're doing matches the music, and it's not like the studio version.

Sal,
What were the influences for the "ska" style of the song? Were you into the British scene at all? Ska wasn't really around in the U.S. at the time.
xdansthemansx 3 years ago
is it ska or is sal really doing a polka? whatever it is, it's stuck in my head right now. thanks sal. thanks a lot.
