You can do that with 9 slots. Just don't get the tallnut and use the pumpkin instead.

@EeyoreXD i beat the ds one by the first full 2 rows with normal pea shooters the next row was a 2 shooter and i put gatlings on them and the next row was torch wood

If you use the wall-nut instead of the tall-nut, you'd save 150 sun and be able to plant three more marigolds at the start. The pumpkins in the row behind the wall-nuts are plenty to keep the dolphin zombies at bay.

pretty good build but i have a better one, it uses 3 gloom aoe shrooms whatever they are and gold magnets to do the work for you as well but, i have the entire water part covered

You don't. It's the feature of the Last Stand mini-game. You start out with 5000 Suns in Last Stand and make a setup that'll last for 5 flags.
