if you have an ipod touch, yes you need wifi.

if you have an iphone, then no.

yes, you can text phones besides ipods. any phone with any carrier.

if you're doing something else other than being in the app, it will show you push notifications.

Also, if it does notify you, do you have to leave what your doing and load the app or is there a little chat box like on Facebook so you can text and play a game or go on the internet at the same time. ok so now am filled up with questions. if i wanna text a verizon phone, they will get it as a txt right? and when they reply, will i get it as a txt or within txt plus as a free txt message? does it work out of wifi for android? when i text a phone, what name shows up?
