I remember this view from QF10, just waking up to see it. Amazing view. They have special procedures in the event of decompression over the terrain there as it is above the usual safe height for an emergency descent in the event of decompression.
The mountains and landscape of Afghanistan is just beautiful. My flight was Birmingham to amritsar with one stop in Turkmenistan, so when we flew over Afghanistan the plane was still ascending to normal altitude,, i mean the landscape was picturesque!
I heard a few months ago the taliban took down a 747 with a left over stinger from the cold war.. Make sure you go on a flight with flares and former military pilots and you will be fine..
@panzerkilla whoops my mistake it wasnt the taliban nor in afghanistan. but it was the fedayeen in iraq that crippled the DHL and they didnt use stinger but strela-3 rocket. about the question how did the taliban got the stinger, is because the CIA sent some stinger missile to afghanistan fight the soviet in soviet-afghan war

Definitely a very beautiful place in certain areas.. Worst weather extremes I have ever experienced.. -10 in winter up to 120 in summer.. Awesome!
