I have never understood why "hello" or "how are you" in mandarin is "ni hao".,and not " "ni hao ma? Not putting the "ma" at the end of the sentence makes it sound somewhat presumptuous, let alone,a little bit rude.In cantonese, they will always put the "ma" at the end of the sentence, as in "nei ho ma?". I find this to be much more polite and much more civilized.I would appreciate any thoughts or opinions on this.Thank you
I have this weird hypothesis that for Asians (Indonesians, Malaysians, etc.) it's easier to learn Chinese but in the western hemisphere it's pretty hard to learn these things..... =/
Hi there. I'm U.S. American, military, and southern. I speak English in various dialects - redneck, street slang, militant lingo, and it go's on. Chinese seems very complex in practice and pronunciation, but it does not have nearly as many words that have so many other connotations as can be found within the English language. I would like to know how many varieties of oriental languages are widely spoken within the country of China. Your input is most welcome.
Why is there so much mis-information out there regarding the "CHINESE" language?.Chinese is NOT a language.There is no such language.Just as there is no language called Mexican,Australian,or Canadian etc.These courses are very good,but they are not Chinese.They are Mandarin.One can BE chinese,but not SPEAK chinese.One speaks Mandarin,or Cantonese,not too mention others.This misconception seems to come mostly from mainland chinese people who speak mandarin.It is incorrect and somewhat arrogant
@loksinsan You're right but I think it's just to make things a bit easier for the complete beginner. I think they could get round this by explaining about Mandarin / Cantonese etc
@loksinsan Very informative. Yet it is rather discouraging to an eager learner of the chinese people's language to discover that you must theoretically learn two distinct (or more) languages in order to learn the chinese peoples languages. Oh well... I guess I'll just learn Japanese instead... lol
There is a university in the United Kingdom called the University of Dundee. It's in Scotland. I would very strongly urge Chinese students who're thinking of coming to the UK to undertake undergrad or postgraduate studies to NOT enrol at the University of Dundee. Many Chinese students at this university have been racially abused (either verbally, and in some cases physically.) Some lecturers at this university are very racist towards Chinese students and the city of Dundee is also VERY racist.
Today, I wore my cool new shirt with an oriental character on it to class. The Chinese TA burst into laughter and told me the shirt read, "I am a sad, pathetic person."
this is kinda hard but really fun. I'm doing this on my own because I have step family in china and I'm planning on visiting them next summer. I want to suprise them. :)

So that just prooves not all translators work, and r u teaching us in baby steps until we get to that level of knowledge?
SOOO EASY BUT SOOOOOO HARD TO WRITE!!!!!! (im mainly learning cuz it sounds fun and my friend Dong is from China and only speaks Madarin Chinese) Mainly I is hard to write lol
@TheComputerH nah its really not that hard to write. im taking my first year of chinese in high school and after a while you get really fast at it to the point where its just like writing english. some characters are harder than others though and the characters have to be written in a very specific order. but its not that hard. and yea "I" seems hard but its really easy once u practice enough.

Jeez, someone is telling lie. Traditional is better than SC. Writing efficiency is a weak reason for keeping SC in this era of portable computer. Also, SC makes many words lose their meaning. Take a word in this video.
buy = 买/買
In SC, the shell (貝) , which was a currency in ancient time, is gone and it makes people harder to understand the meaning of 买.
its hard :(

The data in my brain suggests that jackie chan does not approve of the french.
Personaly I refuse to speak french or study french even though I can understand about 10 french words.
My gut instinct says there is something horribly wrong with the french.
I believe it is connected to wine.

Jeez, someone is telling lie. Traditional is better than SC. Writing efficiency is a weak reason for keeping SC in this era of portable computer. Also, SC makes many words lose their meaning. Take a word in this video.
buy = 买/買
In SC, the shell (貝) , which was a currency in ancient time, is gone and it makes people harder to understand the meaning of 买.

简体中文便于更快速的书写,是有好处的,不过也不意味着繁体字要舍弃,也没有谁更优秀之说。

你好。我很高興你學習中文。
但是你學的中文是簡體中文。
真正的中文是繁體中文。
你可以去看中國歷史有記載。
請想信我。
Hello. I'm glad you to learn Chinese.
But you learn Chinese is Simplified Chinese.
The real Chinese is the Traditional Chinese.
You can look through the history of China.
Please believe me.
