  • "But you without clothes

Oh I could not keep a straight face

    Me - without clothes?

Well, a nation turns its back and gags.." - I love those lines :)

  • yes, im listening because of Vini Reilly's guitar playing this is pure magic, his guitar style is without a doubt undeniably masterful. And of course the story/lyrics and melody is pure genius..i wish Reilly and Morrissey would record again.

  • Love Vini Reilly's playing on this album

  • Does anyone get goosebumps by the way he says "Came home late one night, everyone gone to bed"?

  • poetic the most best solid voice of his life.........

  • winter w/pine trees out streched w/ snow and my beautiful I miss it so much ams christmas has never been the same since the loss of my family!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I moved out of the house where I grew up about 8 years ago. Over this past summer, the basement was flooded and one of the basement walls collapsed. Then Hurricane Irene came through. The current owner is unemployed and probably hasn't paid her mortgage in a while. I have a feeling it will probably get condemned at some point. The inspectors probably don't know and don't care about love. :(

  • moved house when i was 15 in 1987, Moz knew how i felt. Always knew how I felt.

  • On another level, lyrically. To be able to capture an entire emotional landscape like this, just staggering. Such a fantastic understanding of expression: when to lay it on and when to fade away, exactly how much to say. Almost like he's channeling it, rather than inventing it.

  • @amarezero Wikipedia is bad for your health.

  • @Misterioso ...I don't understand, sorry O.o

  • Morrissey is the way!

  • ein exzellenter sound und eine aussergewöhnliche stimme!

  • A Nation turns it's back and gags?? :O Are they blind, it'd be a marvellous sight to see!

  • there's not even a way to describe how i love this

  • Love at first sight may sound trite...

    But it's true, you know...

  • I've come to this song today, because it feels like what I've come to know as a Maudlin Street day. A dreary day that is perfect in it's dreariness, where you feel so nostalgic that you want to cry, but the day's events are so boring that they are beautiful.

    I love Maudlin Street days

  • @ShonaBorrissey you nailed it

  • @ShonaBorrissey wow you just put exactly how i felt today into words..maudlin street days, love it

  • @ShonaBorrissey like days where you get to lay in awe on your bedroom floor, right?

  • @sumofsumstuff Oh smother me mother. :)

  • @ShonaBorrissey amazingly well expressed

  • @tattoofthesun Thank you. If only I had a real life, instead of one where I sit at home and write about music. Well, I can think of worse things to do.

  • If I go to England one day, I will def walk around the streets as Morrissey/ the Smiths playing on my ipod..

  • @cakmakypn you are welcome my friend :) I do the same. I hope to go to Manchester one day, where he is from

  • @smithslover1 I'm from Manchester :)

  • @cakmakypn Yes come to Manchfester! It's a hole but i love it, plus i'm stuck here...

  • @UnderTheAffluence thanks I always was wondering what he said (beautiful),,,c-moon..

  • @38darknessdelight Happy to help. It's one of my favourite bits of the song.

  • Where the world's ugliest boy became what you see. Here I am, the ugliest man.

  • Damned beautiful song.

  • This and Vauxhall and I are his best albums.

  • the definitive English suburban 70's adolesence anthem.

  • I dedecate this song for my brother gregory he live4this song well ,I dedicate this to him love your baby sister cyn....R.I.P love you see you in the end!!!!!!and one other thing only a few listen (pathetic).......instead of ga ga it should mean something!!!!!

  • I dedecate this song for my brother gregory he live4this song well ,I dedicate this to him love your baby sister cyn....R.I.P love you see you in the end!!!!!!

  • This song is a novel squeezed in a seven-minute symphony of melancholy, betrayal to yourself (memoirs and broken feelings) and mystery that transports you into an imaginary street that could be your own neighborhood. Definitely, like smithslover1 said... ONE OF THE BEST SONGS EVER WRITTEN!

  • Yes...absolutely his best song...just beautiful.

  • Fantastic, this is the soundtrack of my 1988...and so on...

  • Why did he break from The Smiths

  • Morrissey is THE best.

  • This song is such a beautiful piece, but it hits with such a force you wouldn't expect. Gives me shivers, makes me want to cry, just feel everything. <3

  • It's reassuring to see how many people have identified this as a key track, even within the Morrissey canon, this one really stands out, when this chap goes deep, he goes deeper than the rest, this song really shows that, spread the message people

  • inspector don't you know?

    don't you care?

    don't you know about love?

  • I HAVE SAY THIS IS THE SONG I WANT TO SLEEP AN ENDLESS SLEEP!!!!

  • maybe moz's finest...jesus christ this is so intense, so painful, so true....Thank you Morrissey, thank you

  • @smithlover1 With Morrissey it's hard 2 pick 1 out, lyrically.

  • You just can't beat him, absolute genius.

  • @Nonmachaine thats what im sayin

  • Why is this song so damn brilliant?! I could listen to this on top of every hour for eons. Definitely one of Mozzer's most moving narratives -- God bless that witty "Pope of Mope."

  • This song reminds me of my ex!!

  • "And I know I took strange pills / But I never meant to hurt you"

This is one of those intensely-personal-for-everybody songs.

  • love to read everyones comments nice to know i was not the only kid who would listen to this a how it impacted me.

  • whenever I start listening to morrissey, I don't stop for hours.

  • @kqpm392 ME AS WELL HE IS SUCH A REAL AND STRAIGHT TO THE POINT!!!! I AM 38 NOW I REMEMBER THE TIME I FIRST HEARD (MEAT IS MURDER) AND HOW IT IMPACTED ME IN THE MOST POWERFUL WAY....POET,I BECAME I LOVE HIM AND LOVE HIM ALWAYS CYNTHIA.....

  • @thecrazybitch371 thanks for the comment, its great to hear of others who feel the same way. Morrissey has taught me to value wonderful things about humanity. he's a cut above pretty much everything really.

  • this song breaks my soul in little tiny pieces....memories like broken glass.

  • this song breaks my soult in little tiny pieces....memories like broken glass.

  • the most beautiful voice ever

  • @missineichen certainly some of the most beautiful words.

  • @kqpm392 yes he is an amazing lyricist. the lyrics of Why dont you find out for yourself are particularly intelligent & cynical :)

  • @missineichen I couldn't agree more. my favourite track off my favourite morrissey album. "I've been stabbed in the back, so many, many times, I don't have any skin but that's just the way its goes." profoundly moving.

  • @kqpm392 so true. my fave parts are "they want to help u to grow, & then siphon all ur dough" + "then you'll see the glass hidden in the grass"

  • this song was part of my path to self destruction and years later and sober it is still an amazingly great fucking song. it's deep!!!

  • @ishlet78 i hope your good now bro. I had the same thing happen to me i was ruining my life had some life changing moments dont ever want to lose it like i did. This song is awesome live life to the fullest and love and be happy bro.

  • EPIC teen angst Anthem of genius proportions.

  • haven't heard this in YEARS. great music never ages....

  • one person took really strange pills...

  • this was intentionally the last song i listened in my room before leaving for college. dunno why i purposefully make myself so miserable, but i felt like i had to do it.

  • @SclafaniBagni I have done done that.

  • you think this is not the best romantic song ever??? you probably don't know nothing about true love...

  • Beautiful! Just perfection!!! Thankyou! :o)

  • Cheesy but I've gotta say it...This song is really good to hear when I (you) feel like shit...Makes my "pain" bearable...

  • Comment removed

  • @moznico Well yes I was about 14 when I tought "this genius must have written this song for me"and now nearly 20years later his music still is the medcine and the drug in one I need every day.

  • @Luke77rat That is good to hear. I recently started to listen to Morrissey again after a 6 year absence (due to my addictions)... Amazingly I was still able to hold onto my cd's, vinyls, and anything that related to Moz...

  • "In pain and ashamed

    With never time to say

    Those special things

I took the keys from Maudlin Street"

Morrisey displays a grasp of the language on a par with the literary greats, Recognition should come as quickly and as expectedly for him as it does for Shakespeare. A true poet

  • @TheBvf07kku i could not agree with you more.

  • played the nick to buy this lp, mr reddy (or mr ready) didnt miss me one bit

  • i can't get over how good this song is

  • I know it's not Marr but the guitar on this is brilliant many times over...

  • @shanatp

That's Vini Reilly from the Durutti Column on guitar. Sadly Morrisey did not give him enough credit for this album, which is, in my opinion, unjustifiable.

  • @ABCDJLG Thanks for the info. Wow I did not know that. Yes unjustifiable indeed.

  • reminds me when I first left home' this was his deciding album. We were all wondering what he would be like alone , after the Smiths

  • reminds me when I first left home' this was his deciding album

  • That song I never got round to writting about my self will never get written now, it's already been written by Morrissey.

    How did he know?

  • Takes me back, repeated album in 1988..best ever

  • Best ever

  • I own the original issue of this LP and i also have a large VIVA HATE tattoo on my belly, it's my absolute favorite record of Morrissey, and this is my fav song. MORRISSEY I LOVE YOU. WE ALL DO, I GUESS

Im 24 now, i will love you till my oncoming death....

  • @clizzleable agreed - what happens in your bedroom stays in your bedroom!

  • My anthem....

  • i will always associate this song with my first love from the military, Laurie Gallegos. Wherever u are, I hope ur doing well.

  • Wherever you are. I hope you're singing now.....

  • There's something about this album Viva Hate, the atmosphere of it and the feelings it evokes are incredible. It's the best thing he ever did in my view.

  • @1980Jonno I agree. Just loved Viva Hate & it takes me right back to my bedroom in March 1988.

  • how he can put any emotion ever felt into simple words we understand is quite remarkable, really.

  • "...and me without clothes: well, a nation turns it back and gags."

  • Morrissey è un genio

  • One of morrissey's utterly best songs...ever.

  • @smithslover1 definitely hands down one of THE best songs ever written

  • Women only like me for my mind...

  • Super, smashing,great!

  • i love morrissey!
