i feel the piece kinda paints a picture of the corrupt and sinister aspects in the english court, but too conveys the helplessness of not being able to alleviate the situation. just a thought.
Yes. It's the only sonata in the set that has the bass viol playing a ground bass. Otherwise it has an independent part. If you don't know the Purcell sonatas - they are superlative. There are two sets.

Another Lully piece with the same bass (derived from the Passacaglia pattern) is 'Scocca pur', a piece which Purcell arranged for keyboard.

The cd liner notes said the bass is from Lully's Passacaille from Armide.

It's from his posthumous "Ten Sonata's in Four Parts (London, 1697)" [Z 802-811]. This is sonata no. 6 in G minor, on a ground bass.

Thank you very much! Do you know if the "Ten Sonata's in Four Parts" has an opus number?
HARMONICO101 3 years ago
Not that I know of- I don't know any Purcell with an authentic opus number.

There's the Zimmerman catalog of Purcell's works. You can look up Purcell in Wikipedia for more info.
