  • 19fiddlinscott57 - thanks for the kind words. The fiddle is tuned to the GDAE intervals, but I tuned it by ear so it's not right on those notes. I just checked it with a pitch pipe.... it's down about 1 fret (1/2 note) from standard tuning.

  • Say, is that fiddle in standard tuning. Man, I just love this old tune and really appreciate your doing it so well.

  • I think I've been listening to this for 24 hours now. Can't stop!

  • Hi again----i have been tring to get to grips with your right hand work on drop thumbing on ora lee! So hard to follow! Have you a tab???????? ican play it ok without drop thumb but it adds so much more? i do hope you have a tab! Brilliant moustache!

  • Batum - sorry, don't have a tab. I read your comment, sat down and played the tune, and I'd have to say that there is more hammer-on and pull-off than drop thumbing the way I play this tune. I'll try to make a slow clip, see if that helps. It's a pretty tune.... you'd probably also like Bob Carlin's version.

  • I was also having a hard time getting the thumbing/hammeron/pulloffs all sounding like it does in your video. i'm still not very happy with the way I play it, but it's a crude approximation. i start to get used to it until i listen to this video again, and it reminds me of all the parts i kind of just fake :)

any idea where i could find a copy of bob carlins version?

  • Nerohj - Bob Carlin put a version of this tune on his "Banging and Sawing" CD. There are lots of good tunes on this CD in addition to Ora Lee. I think it took me a couple of months to learn this tune.... not an easy one to play, but a nice sounding one.

  • how lovely! Wish i could drop thumb like that! How do you learn to do that!

  • Batum - thanks for the kind words. How learned ?.......a mis-spent youth ! ;)

I think that anyone can learn to drop-thumb... desire to learn (fire in the belly) is very important. Also immerse yourself in the music so you have a good internal idea of how you want to sound.

  • Thanks-its all true! is ther a particular tune that would lend itself to drop thumb as a learning exercise?

  • Batum - I can't really think of a particular tune that is especially well-suited to learning drop-thumb.

Try to get someone to show you the hand motions, then try experimenting w/ drop-thumbing on a tune that you know.

  • wonderful as usual

  • Hi Mike - thanks ! ! Hope your banjo-ing goes well.

  • Very nice and great tone all the way around . All the best , Guy

  • Guy - thanks for the kind words.

  • really lovely
