Growing up in Cleveland in the early 60's was such a Wonderful time, I remember it All,I lived on the east side in the 50's,then we moved to the west side in the 60's. Ghoulardi was My Hero. Thanks.
Not only did she interview Hitler, he kicked her out of Germany!! Dorothy was one heck of a woman!! I left Ohio in 1966 and Dorothy was one of the people on local TV that I really missed.
This clip brought back memories of when I was a kid and watched Channel 5 news. Sadly ,both, Dorothy Fuldheim and Joel Rose are no longer with us. Dorothy passed away in 1989 at the age of 96. Joel Rose commited suicide in 2000,after he found out that he was the target of a police investigation for allegedly being a serial stalker of several women who would send them "gifts" of lingerie and pornographic materials, however, DNA tests failed to link him to the crimes.
She was a tv pioneer (one of the first woman reporters)and a journalist on par with Murrow. The problem was she stuck around on the air too long. She wasn't doing anything relevant for years before she was forced off the air due to illness. Yes, in the late 30's she interviewed Hitler, and in the 60's she interviewed Abby Hoffman and the Queen of Egypt. But by the 70's and 80's she was on a silly little editorial segment or a call-in segment discussing her dinner her belief in UFO's.
OMG long time clevelander-yes indeed those were the days-3 channels 3-5-8 no cable no tv after 11pm. yeah those were the days-lol=How about the gene carroll show-Local talent at its best on Sunday mornings-
how could i forget channel 43- lanigan and the prize movie or superhost-also old channel 61 when it had shows, movies. the good ole days-glad theyre gone
I was born and raised in Cleveland and still live here. I remember watching all of those shows while growing up. I 'm sure that you even remember the late Linn Sheldon as "Barnaby" which was on ch.43 for many years. Those definitely were the good old days of TV , when the local stations had more control over their programming . Nowadays the only local programming you see is just the news.
OMG indeed...Dorothy *and* Joel Rose, the man who could turn *anything* into a wildly un-PC double entendre. They used to take viewer calls once a week (Wednesdays? Fridays?) during the noon newscast and some of those exchanges would just leave you breathless with laughter. Has anyone ever posted Dorothy's "Tonight Show" appearances? Carson just adored her. Dorothy also guested on the Donahue show and was receiving major national attention before suffering the stroke that ended her career.
To think that was "the most trusted name in journalism." I remember she went all the way to Northern Ireland for an I.R.A. story and ended up talking mostly about her sore feet. She may have been a bit senile by the time she keeled over in her WEWS office.
Dorothy did not pass away at WEWS. She was in the Jennings nursing home for quite a few years before she passed. She had a daughter who has passed. I don't know if she had any other relatives?
Awesome! Dorthy was one of a kind!

I believe Dorothy had the distinction of having interviewed Adolf Hitler. Quite a feat being a woman and Jewish.

I read that somewhere too, I do think that statement is correct...

Wow... I did not know that about Joel Rose. Was he still doing the News?
Stu4u2do 2 years ago
No he was pretty much retired by then, but, it was a pretty big story on the tv and in the papers for quite a while after it happened.
eps2467 2 years ago
Weekends he played music at the Lamplighter in Olmsted Township. The marque used to say "See Joel play his organ" classic.
