I never knew my Irish mother but this song brings up deep feelings that don't visit very often. Only Irish music does it. God bless Van Morrison and his people.
He's the most creatively articulate songwriter, he's a man who invented totally new interpretations of original rock and roll, and blues, and the black folk-music idiom. I've loved and listened to his music for 30 years or more. But I stopped listening some years ago because the persona of the man intruded on what I was listening to. He's a dysfunctional, incapacitated human being devoid of the capacity to engage with other human beings. Rude, aggressively ignorant, and clinically paranoid.
@Tphilpott1 What a bloody idiot you are for depriving yourself of the wonder of listening to the genius of Van just because of your current opinion of him----what a waste. This is just like the idiots that won't listen to Frank Sinatra ( The greatest vocalist of all times) because he was involved with the Mafia & was a little arrogant with the press etc.-----Get a life!
great way to start my new year thank you so much for this brought tears to my heart and eye. I need for more people who know how to play thier instruments and sing from deep dark spots of the soul and love to be in the world thank you all
@gsdsteve Couldn't agree more! I have this on a reel-to-reel somewhere taped off the telly in the 70s and this particular phrase at 2:40 just got the hairs up on the back of the neck and it still does. Imagine just thinking of that phrase and those notes and just going for it. Playing the saucepans at the same time too!
@RogerjTurner Thanks! Van really is in a class by himself. I've seen him several times over the last 25 years, the last time being about 5 years ago. His voice is still a powerful instrument.
Makes my heart burst! were there ever more beautiful words written about obsession? Patrick Kavanagh was a genius...... Oh! and they call it "English" literature...............!
the third verse makes his voice mourn for his sweetheart, he cant handle it at first, listen to any version. He cant say "quiet street where old ghosts meet" cuz it reminds him of his late wife.
this is from a 30 minute st patrick's day special broadcast by bbc northern ireland in1988, saw him and the chieftains at the albert hall in that year. that was a gig never to be forgotten, many thanks for the post...........:-)
Dear Van, I am the girl who composed INTO THE MYSTIC, while working in Bloomingdale's, wishing a young Marine wouldn't perish , as did my Uncle Joe,in WWII(The Marines laughed me out of your concert, saying I had to be the man, but was only THE MOOSE"/I was only dreaming of being included in the Irish Mystic world/I miss arranging&composing. I sound like Faith Hill, and I really need your help/call Lu Anne Moran at 973-467-2220(I am "The Prisoner" Eric Clapton wrote of/PLEASE HELP ME OUT/I LOVED
Saw the Chieftans in Brisbane years ago with some upstart called Sarah Mclachlan..not sure what became of her. Anyway it was a great concert and the only one I have ever been to where the musos were sat the whole time HaHa
@OutlawIV Luke Kelly is one of Ireland's greatest musicians. This cover (luke's was the original) is sorely lacking in comparison. I'm also quite fond of Glen Hansards rendition of the song.
God bless the poet and the heart of one who writes and sings. God bless the voice of love so deep in world that's grown so cold. God bless the author of love that is found within. Without it we are dead men and women walking.
I was lucky enough to see a live performace of Van and the Chieftans a long number of years age....brilliant. That evening Van played 5 different instruments, piano, guitar, sax, drums, harmonica.....what more is ther to say. Paddy and the Chieftans were excellent.....but I still think that Luke Kelly's version of this song is better..and that "Into the Music" is Vans best,,,I stand to be corrected.....In saying all this I think Paddy Kavanagh would like this version of the song
@comaradella well said Hector, you remain true to yourself, never look back with regret, look forward with dignity, this music here is like a pathway to that secret, great place.
...and I said, let grief, be a falling leaf...at the dawning of the day. O.K. so maybe the lyrics are important as well. In any case, stop reading and start listening. Sublime. Genius. My hero.
dear up from under it's actually "sound and tone" referring to poetry, in the original poem, by Paddy Kavanagh, but sound and stone also works, re sculpture. Most covers use "sound and stone" James
I'll have to disagree with many outhere. At any point I think Van meant disrespect the original song or put his version in front of Luke's. It's just a beaultiful song and he recorded with his remarkable voice with nothing less than The Cheftains.
He did an outstanding job in this one (as so many of his songs). Amazing version of it and for me is the best one.
Dull? Hell no!! I sense some reverence for Mr Kelly, not that I know much about him, but The Chieftains and Van Morrison can't be called dull. Sure, Van's got a style all his own, and not all appreciate him, but I love this performance. It's got soul! All these boys have paid their dues and deserve some reverence too.
@rickmystic I'm a big Van fan but I would have to agree with the previous poster. In as much as any song can belong to one performer, Raglan Road belongs to Luke Kelly. This is a nice performance but even Van can't match Kelly's versions of this. Hell, when Kavanagh wrote it he told Kelly that he wanted him specifically to sing it.
This song should be accompanied with a banjo & defo not an electric keyboard
