I am a huge fan of Dr. Paul but when it comes to understanding nuclear energy he is wrong. Science cannot understand the effects of nuclear energy until they understand the entirety of the universe (unified field). There is one man who did know this and his name is Walter Russell, if you want more information regarding the subject please read ATOMIC SUICIDE! by Walter Russell. This is probably the most important book you can read if you truly want to know what radiation is capable of.
@TwentycharactersIong Anyone who has taken a class on Nuclear Power knows Ron Paul is right. Give this book a read "Fundamentals of Nuclear Science and Engineering" by Schultis and Faw, and then let me know what you think. Atomic Suicide was realeased in 1957. You're telling me that we don't know more about nuclear power than we did in 1957?
Long story short, nuclear has a lot of advantages as long as it is handled PROPERLY. We have some of the best technology in the world, France has lived off of around 85% nuclear for 50 or so odd years and never had an accident, there is not a doubt in my mind that we're capable of doing the same. Yes to alternative and all that of course but until they become DEVELOPED ENOUGH to be relied upon entirely you need a main source which is dependable and doesn't pollute. Nuclear gets the job done.
He made such a good point with the submarines, the man has an absolutely relevant and concise point; nuclear power is SERIOUSLY overblown these days. When people so much as hear the word nuclear, they INSTANTLY picture hiroshima and nagasaki, bombs going off, etc etc. There have only been a couple of incidents ever, thee mile island which was very insignificant, chernobyl which happened because the soviets were reckless and had crap technology, and japan which happened due to an EARTHQUAKE.
I'm worried about Ron Paul too. None of this seems in line with his historical rhetoric (as far as I know) which becomes super fishy. Sometimes I seriously wonder if there is a shadow government brainwashing our elected politicians as they seem to always fall away from previous perspectives into a more unsustainable wash... I wonder if he has gone to Mt. Weather (since 9/11 politicians take shifts going to Mt. Weather, a underground facility built for times of instability, a shadow government)
Nuclear power is not the best energy source. With the sun we could easily power everything with limited resources and bring about basic elements of preventing the outcome of r own extinction. Nuclear energy is forming a new gene pool of the earth along with genetically modifying us and everything that is apart of us. That code is being modified because of man made corp greed. Time to wake up and start looking forward instead of continuing down the paths which will in the end lead to r demise.
I think I am now withdrawing my support for Paul in 2012... something seems fishy, he might be on the toshiba / ge / TEPCO payroll for those 2 plants being planned in Texas using Obama's guaranteed funds.
the media is completely ignorant w.r.t. the real (non)consequences that will result from this mishap and their efforts to scare the hell out of an all too gullible public are nothing more than irresponsible. Seeing news stories talking about how the weather systems are going to "cary" the radiation to the west coast would be laughable if they weren't so sad. But because most people don't know jack about nuclear physics they'll eat it up.
First time I have EVER disagreed with Ron Paul. Doesnt seem consistent with his principles. The government created nuclear energy.
There is a good article on the cato institute website about the libertarian view of nuclear energy titled 'nuclear energy, risky business'. it makes the argument that free markets would never sustain nuclear power.
@openskycreative That just means you're blinded by ideology. Don't be fucking stupid, nuclear energy is safe and efficient as long as we hold it to certain standards. It's like one of the only times regulation is really necessary or desirable.
@openskycreative Cato isn't perfect. Nuclear energy is safe. More radiation dispersed during nuclear tests than is being expelled by this minor hick-up yet alarmists are too quick to not "let a good crisis go to waste". The spread of nuclear material is very limited to a small radius (no more than 30 miles) from the epicenter. Anyone claiming a greater reach does so out of ignorance.
@openskycreative Oh yeah, government didn't create nuclear energy, humans (scientists specifically) discovered it. Like they discovered fire. Once they new that the genie could be taken out of the bottle it was just a matter of time. The fact that the government funded it when it happen doesn't mean it wouldn't have been worked out absent that government aid. Trust me, if we hadn't done it first someonen else would have done it. Fision wasn't a govt secret. Scientists all over new of the psblts.
WFT? I thought Ron Paul was anti-socialism. Nuclear power is the welfare queen of energy. Without billions in government money and support, no nuclear power plant could be built in the USA.
@theyalllied Tell Ron Paul that. He seems clueless on the real public cost of having nuclear energy.
There are huge big government (taxpayers') subsidies involved. Besides the obvious long term problems of waste, government and taxpayers also pick up the insurance coverage of all nuclear power plants because no private insurance company wants the risk of what we are seeing in Japan. Who can blame them. I'm for free markets but not large corporations dumping on the public.
Ron needs to keep hitting on the Fed, but he also needs to focus on the income tax. I can't quantify how much wealth the Fed has destroyed, but the income tax destroys more year after year, I can guarantee you.
The income tax destroys any sense of privacy and property. Both liberals and conservatives should be as adamantly opposed to income taxation as Ron Paul is opposed to the Fed.
Since 911 we will spend every possible cent to try and provide perfect security, Iraq, Afghanistan, Patriot Act, which is completely impossible
However clean energy which is unlimited in resource (wind, water, thermal, wave) - (not nuclear/oil) is well within our grasp and we can not seem to find the money, or the willpower to invest into it.
I wonder if the same special interests are behind both issues.
@LiveFreeorDieReport I'm pretty sure Ron was referring to any concerns about nuclear power in the USA being overblown. we all know full well Japan is going through very turbulent times

The EPA is a rabid pitbull that has come off the leash. What's Ron going to do, to reign them back in?
Will he (if elected) and Congress even have any power left in another year to get this totally autonomous agency under control?
What's his stance on domestic oil production: drilling AND refineries?
Can he guarentee, that IF South Carolina, or any other state, wants to drill/ refine oil, that NO government agency will hinder their pursuit?
Not to mention TSA, DHS, BATF, IRS, etc.

We will see. This may be one of the few times I disagree with Ron Paul. I think the situation in Japan may be worse then they are claiming.
