Im trying to cast a rather large rifle out of resin, where should my fill hole be? It has a carrying handle and I think that air could get trapped in it, but I also thought that I could use the barrel as a starting point for my fill hole and go from there
@halopartyboy In my opinion I think it's best upside down with vents at the highest points and the fill hole at the highest of those, all that's left after that is tilting and burping the mold as shown here to let the air escape. I might be an amateur at this but I hope this can help :)
could you give me some links where i could by all these materials, becuase i also want to start resin cast but i don´t know what material to use, becuase i am from Germany!!!
Hello. I'm new. Have my silicone mould ready and started to cast things out. Pull them off after trying 5 cast, 12hrs, 24hrs, 3 days u name it. but i still get the same result. the finished casting products have tacky surface where finger print will stay there when ever i touch/hold it! What went wrong? Spray on wax are used. Very thin layer applied.
Plasticine clay sometimes has sulphur that will cause the silicone NOT to cure, so be sure to NOT use those types of plasticine clays. But yes, a simple mold can, be made from P-Clay.
Hello! The problem with curing inhibition is inherent to platinum-cured silicones, but you can use tin-cured where platsil won't do. Major down-sides to tinsil is it ages quicker and shrinks a bit more with age, and actually is a platsil inhibitor itself. It's also nasty to prepare with 3% catalyst mixing ratio, but it just might save you from a "sticky situation" :)
you know of urethane epoxy resin that is pure for use in areas of silver, white and gray? because I use an epoxy resin after adding in silver and white areas often with yellow reflect the sun made after several months and loses its clarity of clear ... you know any product in epoxy urethane or other product in the U.S. in sales in some clear epoxy urethane (link)?
It's polyurethane, which is a type of plastic. I did something similar when I made my Zebraman costume -- I used Smooth-On Smooth-Cast 300, which is available in starter kits at some art supply stores.
Smooth-on has a kit to get you started. Cost should be less than $50-60 for making a small mold of a small part. A large project could run hundreds of dollars for the silicone alone. Depends on your project.
Thats tough. Air entrapment on the legs would cause voids. You would need to add sprues, like extensions the model cars and plane kits have, to allow a place for the air to move to.
Depends on what you are wanting to make. 1oz is a pretty small amount. Thats about a shot glass worth of material. Usually silicone will need to be at least a quarter inch thick to support the weight of the resin.
depends on the resin used. Most are Shore 80 hardness. Thin parts will be brittle but that depends on the resin. Some are much softer. Yes, you can get clear, and if you can cast it without air bubbles, will look like water.
Very informative. Good to know that I am not the only one suffering when making cast resins. It can be a messy time consuming job. Sometimes when I make a hollow resin cast in order to thicken the resin lining I add talc powder mixing it in, making it more gooey and that results in a thick resinj coating.

Could you please give me an idea of where I can purchase casting resin and RTV silicone? I've actually gone to a few places without luck.
DoctorWrath 2 years ago
visit smooth-on. com for the resin, and bare-metal. com for the RTV silicone. I like the Smooth-cast 320 resin, and the l 71-20 silicone RTV.

You can get special casting resins but they all tend to get very hot when setting "exotherm " This leads to cracking or distortion.
Plus i am yet to find one with very clear colours,,
Casting urethanes are way way better

Very good video, I have 2 questions:
Is that how they do most of the star wars resin blaster parts?? Can you add aluminum powder to the mixture to give it a metal finish?
cherielsl 2 years ago
Yes, and YES!
JimE2 2 years ago
There is a UK product that is a very fine metallic powder you brush into the mould before casting.
The urethane then bonds to it and you can also give it a light polish afterwards..

Thank you!! ^_^ What does resin feel like? is it just like plastic or can you sand it to make it feel a little more coarse like porcelain?
sendono 2 years ago
You can order different hardnesses, and you can add minerals and metals to it.

Obviously lol that's not very specific. It's like when someone asked you what kind of car you drive and you reply back saying "it's a car"

well it's pretty obvious that it is resin, hence the title of the tutorial.
