Fantastic tune - the perfect follow up to First Picture. Btw I hate the term "80's music" The music in the early 80's is nothing like the music from the late 80's therefore they should not be grouped together under one heading.
@44eelz You're kidding right?.....Or are you suggesting that The Associates' "Party Fears Too" belongs in the same category as Kylie Minogue's "I should be so lucky"????
@44eelz Sorry, thought you were trying to be clever. Yeah look them up, just one example of the sheer brilliance that was around in the early 80s which wasn't quite so abundant by the late 80s. Let me know if you want some more recommendations...
@geoffers35 yes! i Love music, write a list on my page if you can, most 80s stuff i heard im not that into, but there are definitely a handful that stick out like this...
Sensational song and Peter Coyle's voice is brilliant. Brings back a lot of nice memories of the 80's. Don't know why but I love the ballerinas at 0.47. They just seem to fit.
Obviously you don't know much about this band, if you compare them to JHJ. The next time, I suggest you feast your ears on their acoustic melodies and/or guitar riffs.

What the fuck did you de-rep me for? All 80's bands are just that: 80's bands. There is very little to distinguish them apart. They'll even admit that themselves. Every 80's pop song is just the same old recycled synths, vocals, guitar, etc. I'm not saying that makes it more or less good or bad, nor is it a personal attack. I am just proving a point. Hell, I love 80's music, but even I know that it's not much different from anything else in the era. Tears For Fears, OMD and China Crisis = same.
"De-rep" you where? I will respond to your point, even though I do not know what post you are referring to, unless you are/were SynchPedro. Have you ever heard "The First Picture of You"? It has no synths, and it has nothing to do with JHJ. All '80s music is the same? Really? So The Smiths make the same music as Depeche Mode? Does U2 sound like Janet Jackson? Is George Michael a recycled Van Halen or Robert Smith (The Cure)? EBTG and FGTH, alike? Your point is absurd.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
No, it isn't. The Cure don't sound like Depeche Mode, U2 or The Smiths because they're unrelated bands that play different styles of music. And I can hear loads of synth in "The First Picture of You" during the bridge of the song. Really. I know my music. I've heard just about every 80's pop band there is. Have you heard of Vitamin Z? Talk Talk? Erasure? If so, then you should know that they're just the same type of bands, like copies. All New Wave bands are very similar to each other. A fact.
Then don't make stupid blanket statements such as, "All '80s bands are just that: '80s bands." It took me less than a minute to make you look like a fool.
The bands you mention are not copies of each other. Erasure has no live drums and rarely has any guitar. What does that have in common with Talk Talk? The Lotus Eaters' TFPOY has very light piano touches in the intro and throughout, which is not the same as using synths. You must need your ears gutted if you believe that this band has something in common with Vince's. Pitch that idea to Peter Coyle. He'll have a good laugh. You obviously have not heard the rest of the band's album, either.
Remember this one well, and love it... but what about "No More I Love Yous"? I remember seeing the music video ONCE when I was in Europe in '89... then many years later, the Annie Lennox cover seemed to usurp its existence entirely. Anyone out there have any recollection-- or even better, ACCESS to the video?
Many thanks for posting this one, though... <3 The memories, how they come rushing in...
Great Band, sad they didn't make it BIG. They penned some great tunes that still stand up today. Just scroll down todays charts to see all the covers, ripped melodies. Wish I could go back in time and really really enjoy these bands more than I did.
The LE were a great band but sadly they had a crap record deal and were not promoted correctly. The Album was released 11 months after the first single entered the charts-way too long!
Typical 80's band, 1 mega album ( must upgrade to CD!), the FPOY and then no more...wow!!They were SO SO underated.I was a die hard New romantic, these turned up in 83 and to me,it was the perfect soundtrack of that summer, I defy anyone on you tube who does not stop and take a trip down memory lane when TPOY is played, even today, it stils sounds fresh and hold it own, great band, top tune....simply brilliant!
1 block busting Album and TFPY.. Then no more, wow!! Truly 80's at its best, must upgrade to CD from vinyl.
Often called wimps, I was a die hard New romantic, these were so cool, I defy anyone brought up in the 80's from that era who does not smile when they hear FPOY, even today it reminds me of that perfect summer when music was music, still sounds so fresh even today.
First time seeing this video but have loved the song for ages! I still have the 12" single of this song -the "Charleston Mix" is great. Thank you sooo much!
Agree, the 12" of this is divine, building up to the lyrics with a sweet instrumental bit. The Lotus Eaters are the most underrated band of the '80s. "It Hurts" is another great single, though not as moving as this and FPOY.
NICE SONG!!! AND PV.
