I am a stand up myself and I had the honour of bringing Jasper on stage tonight at the Blossomfield Club Solihull where he turned up as an unannounced guest to try out some new material! Half an hour of up to date, top quality stuff which blew the roof off ! A comics masterclass. Thanks Jasper and long may you continue! Ryan :-)
I don't think Carrot's funny any more but this is a GREAT song once it gets going. "Ain't nobody gonna tell me where to goo now", lovely. Great performance by JC too.
Well I don't care, all the haters can hate, when my moped's back from the garage I'm riding it around and playing this song (on speakers, full blast ;D)
Jasper is an awesome comic and script writer, and he pulled that off in 1975 good on him, funny song :). Laughing all the way to the bank our Jasp, sad hater, don't you wish you were too? Oh no, all you can do is troll youtube, sad innit?
With all due respect ( as in none ) your comments simply show your lack of humour and brain cells.. I expect you also thought 'Laurie Lingo and the Dipsticks- Convoy GB' was crap too..
Dunno whether to feel sorry for your inability to see humour and smile, or accept that perhaps you are just a miserable excuse for a human being,, spreading a little grey in folks lives as you pass by............
You must be aware that when this song was released we had perhaps over 1 million young riders on moped The laws had changed in regard to what us teens could use so mopeds FS1E was OUR life's so the song was funny and true. The understanding of mopeds and life has changed alot since then
It is a very crap song but I remember singing it non stop to my parents, in the end they gave in and bought me a brand new Yamaha FS1E DX bright yellow and black fucking lethal that front brake was lol. Got mine up to 55MPH down hill with the wind behind me. It was 1976 as I remember, Happy days :-)
@222fox1 I would love to have a go on one again, I didn't half pull some crumpet with that thing although I was 6 stone lighter then, I might get it up to 30mph these days lol
@vestariner. Thanks for that info about Jasper and his record cost's, Just show's you how making a record "A" side can give you a hit with the "B" side and I hope it made him more than the cost's.... You don't know a record out in 60- 61called lyche fair.
1975 was a very interesting year for pop music. So much going on, and punk still comfortably, only a London/New York sub-sect. Gems like this and so many others in a similarly eclectic vein lent a random element to what became popular. For me, it was the last real year of the charts - as they were begun in the early 50's. What came afterwards was good, but of a very different nature.
@seeltham The Magic Roundabout. A stand-up routine. Which is what everyone bought this for. Added to the single because he'd used £700 of the £1,000 recording budget for the A-side and had forgotten about the flip.
@seeltham The B-side to Funky Moped was Magic Roundabout, it's on here 'cos I watched it today. Jasper also did a series of books in the 70's & 80's look for carrott roots, a little zit on the side, shop! or a store is born and sweet and sour labrador. Thanks for reading.
@Rilltheorem Lovely bloke, Chris. When he came back to the uk for a visit a ouple of years back there was a nostalgic night at Hitchin Folk Club and Chris did this song with Jasper and his old singing partner Harvey Andrews among others. That was such fun!
Aaaah - The Garelli Rekord. What a bike ! Sadly I only had an FS1-E. I modified it with a skimmed head, enlarged ports and an expansion chamber and it would achieve around 50mph. Having said that I feel I should point out that this was downhill with a following wind and a favourable horoscope.
@drpoxy Arrrrrrrrrgh the Garelli Rekord! Spent more time fixing it than riding it! Once the magneto flywheel detached whilst heading towards Basildon on the A127, came straight through the crankcase cover. Pushed it all the way to Canvey Island for a new cover and woodruff key. Have'nt learnt from that experience and ride a Ducati today!
Quality control (or lack of) has often been something of an Achillies heel for Italian hardware. But Garellis and Ducatis certainly look the business and in the case of the latter - sound it too ! Always fancied a Laverda Jota myself. Loud, noisy & very, very exciting - but - at my age and with my arthritic joints probably not a very sensible idea.
Jota - you cannot beat the sound of a triple. I've also got a 1979 XS750 Yam. Last year I visited the Ducati factory on route to Mugello. Well worth a visit. Looks like you know your bikes. Do you follow the racing? Neil Hodgson is back in BSB next year, looking forward to seeing Neil race again in UK. Rossi fan?
Sunday May 31st 2009 at Hitchin Folk Club. Jasper performed the song on stage at a Harvey Andrews gig, accompanied by Chris Rohannn (the writer) and Harvey. An evening to remember.
The actual recorded version is a lot more gutsy and heavier than this. But a great song nonetheless, I think he released this to take the piss out of Chris Speddings "Motorbikin".
He only recorded it because it was predicted that the BBC would refuse to play the "Magic Roundabout" routine that was on the other side of the single.
You had too be there in the late 70's period. At 16 you could ride a thing called a sports moped (Yamaha FS1E - Suzuki AP50 - Gilera, Garelli's, Fantics and more). B side to this was Jaspers rendition of The Magic Roundabout where Florence told Dougal to piss off & he did against the tree Dylan was leant against
