Can somebody help me out? How would I be able to use this as a film-maker? I'm thinking of buying it for my SONY NEX VG-10, but if it only flashes for stills then it won't be worth breaking the bank for it.
quick question. yes, I'm on a budget... but I can save up for one of these OR go the F42AM, Sigma 530 DG Super, or Metz 48. Which do you think would be the best if suppose I don't go for the F58AM?
thanks for your quick response. You replied in perfect timing actually. Because there was a used 42 on eBay that I was indecisive about, I went ahead and bought it (it wasn't an auction, but one of those "Buy It Now" items). I've heard great things about Metz, but their prices aren't far from Sony's, I'd rather just get the Sony. Sigma's flashes on the other hand, have had some bad raps.

Flash guns are powerful tools in photography.
going from on camera flash to the F42AM or even this one is a huge improvement.
Mostly of cause for indoor shots.
Way better investment than the best lens in this situations...
If money is a big concern, get the 42 or a model from Metz.
The 58 is more or less only interesting for vertical shots because of the tilting head.
Yes; the guide number is higher than the 42 but that doesn't matter in day by day shooting...

I personally would go for the F42AM.
It has a lit display that is great in the dark, should you do manual setup.
The F58AM offers most options.
As said best for vertical bouncing.
Also it allows strobe, external battery support and more.
But to use it's potential it takes time and will to learn!
If you "just" like to flash or bounce some indoor events in flash auto mode go for 3rd party.
They offer better price/value ratings.
I heard that Metz is best but not sure about...

Since getting this flash I've sprained both my wrists while shooting on an a700 lol.
Dread to think about the weight with a CZ lens, F58am, grip and diffuser...
