I went to Charleston school, and there were integrated proms untill the late '80s, when the races seperated because the whites didn't want to hear rap music, the school would host a prom every year, but most of the whites wouldn't show up because of the "bumping and grinding" and offensive language in the music.
These are two beautiful girls and I commend thier courage. It does not matter what type of accent they speak with. These girls have more courage than most twice their age. Good Job girls!! Stand up for equality in this country!!

The separation of working class blacks and working class whites fueled racism, keeping both groups — who talk the same, eat the same and pray the same — from realizing that they were all getting screwed by the man in the "Big House."
Certain parts of the South — ATL, NC (where I live!) VA, TX — have moved ahead, but other parts of the region, like this part of Mississippi, have stayed stuck in the past.
It just goes to show that if you keep one group down you keep everybody down. The kids in this documentary are not evil inbred hicks, they're just regular kids who have been raised around hate and fear and poverty. And it's absolutely nothing but sad.

Mississippi has progressed a whole lot since the 1960's. Politically yes, but there are still racial divides politically. In the 2008 presidential election exit polls 88% of white voters in Mississippi voted for McCain where as 94% voted for Obama. Racialized voted is the worst down South, so the divisions based on this documentary is reflected in they way the races vote in Mississippi.
I lived in Mississippi during high school and there are more than segregated proms in some places they have a black and a white homecoming queen and court.

I would hate for this to become representative of the whole state. I've lived in Jackson, MS my entire life, I've never even heard of Charleston, MS. I have certainly never heard of any of the schools in this area having segregated proms. I love the video because I am was born and raised in Charleston. I was in the class of 2008 a lot of my friends were black and they were great friends. The documentary is powerful and shows you that the world is not perfect, but we can make it better.

I went to Charleston school, and there were integrated proms untill the late '80s, when the races seperated because the whites didn't want to hear rap music, the school would host a prom every year, but most of the whites wouldn't show up because of the "bumping and grinding" and offensive language in the music.

Certain parts of the South — ATL, NC (where I live!) VA, TX — have moved ahead, but other parts of the region, like this part of Mississippi, have stayed stuck in the past.

Mississippi has progressed a whole lot since the 1960's. Politically yes, but there are still racial divides politically. In the 2008 presidential election exit polls 88% of white voters in Mississippi voted for McCain where as 94% voted for Obama. Racialized voted is the worst down South, so the divisions based on this documentary is reflected in they way the races vote in Mississippi.

I would hate for this to become representative of the whole state. I've lived in Jackson, MS my entire life, I've never even heard of Charleston, MS. I have certainly never heard of any of the schools in this area having segregated proms. Yeah, but how do you explain the power of the well known extremely conservative borderline racist political group known as the Conservative Citizens Council in Mississppi? From what I heard, Governor Barbour and a good portion of the state legislators meet with this organization on a daily basis.

@DG3744 First of all.. I do not have any ku klux klan members in my family... I do however have black people in my family!!!! Simply to burn a cross for any reason is against god and here in the south we take god seriously. There are no sexual relations between family members.. it takes a sick mind to even think up a comment like that. I grew up in Texas and am very proud to be from Texas. My family has never shown any difference in color and have married outside of our race.

I love the video because I am was born and raised in Charleston. I was in the class of 2008 a lot of my friends were black and they were great friends. The documentary is powerful and shows you that the world is not perfect, but we can make it better.

i have been watching this documenetary for the past week an everytime i watch it i shed tears...like the students said it was 2008...they should have been integrated proms...i was so happy wen i saw the outcome of the integrated prom...i loved how everybody just got along an it looked like the perfect prom...although i did not attend that school i am proud to b a member of the class of 2008...2008 was a yr of change an changes did come...

I sat backed and watched and paid careful attention. Fact is that no other races of people have a issue with whites but it is whites(generally speaking)who have a issue with people of color. I think you whites suffer from a mental disease that has been passed down from generation to generation. As a Blackman i have never once in my life time heard a single Black person say they hate white people just because their white. Whites are the trouble makers in the earth, not all but most.

please. I'm a black male, and it seems to me that the majority of whites are not like this. It's just that the bigots tend to be so vocal that they give their whole race a bad name. Hopefully, our generation or another makes racism socially unacceptable.
And for the record, I have seen plenty of blacks who are racist against whites, but I believe the majority of us are colorblind as well. Racism, although very much the minority, is in every race, but it's up to the majority to shun it.

After watching the film you can't understand why a black person that live in that town would have an issue with white people? At best black people talk, in charleston mississippi white people do. The school did not pay for the whites only prom, racist white people did. All im tring to say is if you remove the cause maybe the effect would be different. Look up the word "Bigotry". History has shown us that racism is wrong. Black or white its wrong so don't excuse it like you just tried to do.

Also, blacks have always been forced to make the first move when it comes to integration. Blacks are the ones forced to be bussed halfway across town to white schools, blacks have always been forced to change their appearances to fit in a white corporate environment, & blacks have always had to suppress their cultural habits in order to conform.

I think it's ridiculous that it in America today still exists communities like the one in MS, where people are not getting along solely based on their race. Last time I checked we had a black president who is still deploying more troops to fight a war. No longer a white mans war I would say. I am from Alabama and our guards from 3 cities were just called to active duty last week. Not to mention goverment health care now being used to pay for abortions. Should we all chalk that one up to a black decision. I just wish the racism would end

Your opinion. Aside from that the Office of the President isn't really a powerful position anymore & hasn't been since FDR was in office. Barack Obama isn't in the driver seat on this one, the Corporations/military industrial complex are, & Eisenhower warned us about this.

Also I do not hate whites. I just wish that as a collective their policies were more holistic to the needs of the planet. I am tired of these wars, the economic inequalities, and the pollution.
What's going on down in the Gulf of Mexico with the Deepwater Horizon Oil rig spill shouldn't even have taken place. The technology was there to make it more safer,yet was ignored and now people like my relatives who are in the shrimping business must suffer.
