Excellent! Many people are calling for residential single family McManisons to become multi family homes, because of the housing crisis. They're really not built for single family use due to their size. One of the arguements against this is that there are no jobs in the residential areas for people of more modest income. However, they're overlooking that McMansions usually go hand in hand with large lawns. Why not tear up those green carpets and start a small farm? Crazy, but it might work.
you can find cheap rain barrels on ebay - just buy the 50gal barrels used to store food -get gutter attachments and you will reduce your paid water usage - you can decorate them so they look nice - don' t get sucked into paying for fancy composters there several good websites and books on simple composting set-ups that don't want to sell you their 300$ glorified plastic container - enjoy and good luck!!
you go girl! you've got the fever - this is how i started with the back "lawn" - it is now a series of raised beds with veggies and edible flowers - i got it so bad we now have 11 hens ("the girls") and a coop and we live in nyc! my husband is losing ground on the battle of the front lawn i already planted 2 dwarf peach/nectarine trees and we had endless raspberries all summer. they thought i "lost it" now the kids friends com to check out moms purple chicken coop and bring home fresh eggs!
