my "first doctor" was Tom Baker (those were the episodes that got played most heavily in the US when i was a kid). but at some point i watched the episodes with Jon Pertwee and liked his take on the character better. (i also liked Patrick Troughton, but they didn't show as many of his episodes over here). i wish i could've met both Pertwee and Troughton when they were still alive.
Definitely thee best Dr Who. Was lucky enough to meet him at the 1974 Car Show, I got him to sign my Car Show program.. Being only 8 I was to star struck to actually say anything.. all I can remember is how tall he looked.. such great days and am so pleased to have been a kid in the best era of television.
I know that Jon loved the role and going round being known as doctor who, and acting of coarse, but it must get annoying only being known for that. Typecast.
I met him when I was a small boy and remember that he wouldn't stop chatting to me. My mum had to drag me away to look at the Sea Devils and Daleks on show at the fete we were in, in Portsmouth. Such a kind man, I remember.
I wish Jon Pertwee was still alive today because if I ever met him I would shake his hand and tell him, "Mr. Pertwee you are and have always been my favorite Doctor."
@gothamcity29 I had the great pleasure of meeting Jon back in 1988. He was in his Worzel Gummidge make up, for a show for kids at a shopping centre. Appreciated my love for Who although he was there for a different role.
Notice how he says about the Doctor.. 'I became recognisable'' rather than 'I became famous'. That tells you that he has character, rather than merely being a character..
@Lytton333 Back then it was recognisable. It was Baker that made the character famous, and immortalised it, because before the new series, you ask of Doctor Who and the reply is usually Tom Baker or the 4th Doctor. But for me, Pertwee is my favourite after Smith and Tennant.
@kingofireland91 Quite.. but the actual part - or character- was already famous before the advent of Tom Baker.. and anyone who played it became 'famous for playing Dr Who'. I should think instant recognizability by millions of householders in Britain constitutes 'fame' in the prosaic televisual sense (not the 'olympian' sense of course ), whether in 1972, 1977 or 2011. My point was that his choice of words denotes his lack of ego. He was famous for playing the role in his own day after all..
He had "aged" so much in the 2 years since Panopticon it was a sign he wasn't well. This is during the time where reports of him being rude and cruel to others. Heart Failure can do that. Victims feel just awful even if there's no chest pain associated with it. John was always associated with physical fitness I wonder if his time doing Worzel weren't that kind to him.
Yes, I could tell he liked doing that show. I've only seen a couple of episodes of Worzel. I just read his final interview. He was really looking forward to an animated version of it due to start that year. He actually thought Worzel was much more diverse and interesting than Doctor Who. However, he must've had some inkling he had something wrong with him?. Ofcourse he was working alot BUT you know he had doctor appointments. I have to say though, he remains my fave with Patrick second.
I like Peter Davison more but he certainly changed what the Role of the Doctor was the most. Oh yer and I like Peter purely because of his acting and what stories he was in and companions. The Five Doctors, Earthshock, Adic, Turlough etc.
Aw... that has quite cheered me up. Saw Jon twice. Once opening a car showroom in Stockport and then again on stage at the Opera house in Manchester. One of the best and very sadly missed.
@Madgamer540 I'm not saying he wasn't good, infact he was VERY good but if you're looking for the best timelord, look no further than Pertwee's successor Mr. Tom Baker
I met him in 1981 when he and Una Stubbs opened the Newbury Agricultural Show, dressed as Worzel and Aunt Sally. It was a completely delightful day and I'll never forget it. He was a very special man.
It was great seeing this interview. Jon and Patrick were always my favourite Doctors. I had the pleasure of meeting both a couple times in the mid/late '80s and there wasn't anything either man wouldn't do for the fans.
Actually, thanks to the BBC novel "The Gallifrey Chronicles", Rowan's Doctor IS canon. The official explanation was that the Eighth Doctor's convoluted timeline caused him to split into three parallel 'Eighth Doctors' (all Paul McGann), and each of those had a different regeneration. So we ended up with Atkinson, Grant (the Shalka Doc), and Eccleston.
Hey, I'm an old Yank. But I have been a Dr. Who fan since the 60's. my favorite Dr. was portraid by Jon Pertwe(#3). David Tenant is good. But not the same!!! Eggleston was a lot like Tom Baker, with short hair. I am looking forward to the next season. =Stefan=
Yes, i totally agree with you .. Great man, Great Doctor
A really good friend of mine met him 3 times : )
i remember being told that, when Pat (2nd Doctor) .. i was told that when he died, he was in his Doctor Who outfit ... so he's probably wandering around up there going "Oh my giddy aunt!" : )
I live in the US, I have a few favorites of the Doctors, But Jon was my frist favorite....even hada small crush on him. God Rest his soul.

You forgot Peter Cushing! He played the doctor in a movie version of the show, with Bernard Cribbins as his assistant!

He's not really a canonical doctor though because in that case we could count Rowan Atkinson from the charity specials...

Like... Official. He isn't an "official" doctor.
