Im a 16 year old man who have some quite massive jaws and a very muscular face in general, however my neck is very thin and i tend to get that vulture look. Is this normal since im still a teenager. Should i train my neck or will it grow naturally?
I'm only a little older than you. I don't know how much your neck grows naturally from puberty, but I know that wrestlers and football players do deliberate neck exercises when they want more neck muscle (mostly to avoid snapping when it comes in contact with the other dude). OMG start small! The only reason I'm looking at this stuff is because I tried a bridging exercise earlier today and now it hurts so bad I'm up at 3:27am.
I'm pretty sure it'll grow naturally. Im 24 and I never trained my neck but it keeps getting more n more muscular. However I do workout in the gym hard.
upright rows always kill my neck when i did them, i think from the tension and my neck is 171/2 inches...also most lifts work the neck because when you lift wieghts heavy wieghts you must tense your neck
get a swiss ball, place it against the wall, lean your weight on it from the front, back or side and do repetitions of pushing your weight up and bringing it back down, this mumics a neck bridge but does not put pressure on your cervicle spine or risk hyperextending your neck the way bridges do.
Use the neck sling. I know it is dangerous but if you startlight you will be ok. Best thing is just to do three sets of 12 reps and right after eat or take your protein. I've done it so long now that after I've done a few sets of 30kg on the neck it bulges out. Bridging is good but at any time you could hurt yourself. I recommend the sling because although dangerous once your used to it is quite safe.
I am a chiropractor, and I do not recommend bridges for patients because that is WAY too hard for any of my patients, the avg joe cant do 20 pushups let alone bridge on their neck. You are also talking about working out for strength vs working out for recovery from an injury. Totally different animals. Most people do fine with simple neck stretches and isometric training. A wrestler or MMA fighter needs hardcore training that can include bridges if they know what they are doing.
@BrettWeir007 well i can easily do 50 pushups and so on n i do muay thai if i wanna strenghten my neck so i dont get knocked out wud u recomend bridges
@CrunkKid911 pushups have no relationto neck strength, i would look up some bridging progressions and work your way up, as a wrestler/boxer i know there is no substitute for bridges. p.s. make sure you are thoroughly warmed up and your neck is loose. good luck
@icharuswing Right, obviously pushups have no relation to neck strength, that wasnt my point. My point was that the average person should not do bridges, why should they? The average person doesnt do isometric neck exercises, let alone something like a complicated exercise like a bridge. A fighter/wrestler is not the typical person, they can do bridges safely because they already have a good base of strength in the neck/traps, etc. Go slow and safe and you will be fine.
@Hotmonkeylovin That was funny, but not very intelligent. I actually treat people with neck pain and neck issues, so I think that after years of studying anatomy/phys/biomechanics and years of clinical experience I have alot more expertise than you. The only reason that I got into this thread is because the guy said that he has never had a chiropractor or PT advise doing bridges. I said that the avg patient would not be given a bridge as a therapeutic exercise, its more for an athlete.
@BrettWeir007 Bridges are horrible for anyone to do. I use resistance bands and small swiss ball neck exercises that work well. My neck used to be bigger years ago but I was always in pain until I learned. Bridges kill all your discs. I still have pain until this day from all the bridges coaches made us do. I wish they told us all the pain we'd be in years later from those things.
