What does this do? In non religious terms.. I'm an atheist and I've read that wrapping the arm in this fashion has similar effects on the body as acupuncture (since each loop hits a pressure point). Sort of how Yoga has a stimulating effect that is scientifically measurable. Tefillin too has "real world" value for those of us who aren't religious. If you want to become Jewish then you need to find a rabbi who will lead you along and teach you how to live a Jewish life and do the rituals. Whether you are Chinese or Australian or whatever doesn't affect your Jewishness (although most Jews nowadays are White, this has not always been the case). All you need is to convert properly or have a mother who is Jewish.

You start the process on the arm by wrapping from the inside out, which is the opposite of what he did here. The way you finish the hand is also different.
For about 6-7 years I was an agnostic via recovering Baptist. Then I started learning about Judaism, started assimilating with the people and rituals. Then decided to go through a formal conversion. Through this whole process I discovered a new way of looking at G-d, one that wasn't forced down my throat like in the Baptist church. I am proud to call myself a Jew and have recently been interested in bringing the mitzvah of tefillin into my daily life.

You may be proud to call yourself a Jew but unless your mother was a Jewess other Jews will call you a Goyim/Gentile/Non-Jew. There is not any "magic" about prayer or following the commandments of the Torah. But there is evidence of God and His caring for those who call upon Him in truth, with a broken heart.

If he was converted by an orthodox Bet Din, and was circumcised according to Jewish law, and went to a kosher mikvah, and then accepted upon himself all the yoke of the Torah, then he is as good a Jew as any other. You are ignorant of Jewish law, it seems.

You can't even imagine. You have to have the covenant in your heart to understand. Choose, 7 laws or 613 laws. For me, donning tefillin instills a higher level of fear of G-d, which instills respect and humility, and pulls my mind away from inclining toward selfish desires. It causes me to better bow before my King, head even lower, heart even more committed to HIS dreams, wants, desires, etc...to His vision and more. HIS, our Creator's, will be done, whatever it may be at any moment.

kosher foods are generally handled better. that makes them better on a physical level, which affects us atheists who believe solely in science. teffilin is based on an ancient acupuncture system, thus it has benefits for the central nervous system

What does this do? In non religious terms.. I'm an atheist and I've read that wrapping the arm in this fashion has similar effects on the body as acupuncture (since each loop hits a pressure point). Sort of how Yoga has a stimulating effect that is scientifically measurable. Tefillin too has "real world" value for those of us who aren't religious. I'm just curious to know how this effects mental clarity scientifically, so I can start harvesting the benefits.

@thatsit07 Anyone can become Jewish. But no one needs to become Jewish for salvation, if they follow the Seven Noahide Laws. If you want to become Jewish then you need to find a rabbi who will lead you along and teach you how to live a Jewish life and do the rituals. Whether you are Chinese or Australian or whatever doesn't affect your Jewishness (although most Jews nowadays are White, this has not always been the case). All you need is to convert properly or have a mother who is Jewish.

How do persian jews or Sephardim put on the Tefillin? Does anyone know? My dad wants to learn and he asked me to look it up but we are Sephardi :) I remember it being a little different.

For about 6-7 years I was an agnostic via recovering Baptist. Then I started learning about Judaism, started assimilating with the people and rituals. Then decided to go through a formal conversion. Through this whole process I discovered a new way of looking at G-d, one that wasn't forced down my throat like in the Baptist church. I am proud to call myself a Jew and have recently been interested in bringing the mitzvah of tefillin into my daily life.

Tefillin is a mitzvah that Jewish people choose to partake in to bring them closer to G-d in their prayers, just like Buddhist meditate on the mantras, just like Catholics take communion, just like Rastafarians smoke the Ganj. It is a powerful and personal ritual which has no effect on you, so there should no reason that you as a 'rational' person have a problem with besides the fact that you're most obviously 'trolling'.

Tefilin will not stay put unless you tighten them up to mildly uncomfortable. I went through this ritual in school, and at a summer camp. My motivation: school was all Jewish. No blacks, no Mexicans. The camp meant that I was 100 miles from home, and I could smoke, stay up, and fool around all I want. I donated my tefilin to Chabad at USC. Ironically, the Chabad house used to be the AEPi house (Jewish fraternity) where I cooked bacon, and experimented with drugs. I am now an atheist.
