I have a quick question, how does one make a terracotta pot/tajine like this flame proof? As I made a BBQ out of terracotta and it cracked down the side with it's first use. ANyone got any ideas as I know you can buy terracotta earthware which is flame proof? Is there a special process to make it have this ability?
for sake of reference can you tell me approximately how much clay was used? in lbs or kg? also - you are a true master at your craft. thanks for all the vids
The music is Smetena's "The Moldau," a tone poem about the flow of the Moldau river. One of my favorite pieces, next to "Till Eulenspiegel's Merry Pranks."
im in a ceramics class and ever since i sat down at the wheel I've been obsessed... personally i like using a lot of water when i throw although my teacher seriously disagrees. Its nice seeing someone as yourself throw because it shows that i don't need to change my way just because someone says it's "wrong"
AWESOME! I've been wanting to make one of these for a while as a gift to my husband, now you have inspired me. LOVE your choice of music too :) BTW, I am going to use Laguna 250 Raku clay-I find that it holds up very well to open flame and electric stoves, and I have successfully used in for all my cookware. I stain it with iron oxide for beauty. Thanks SO much for posting : )
Dan, I love your style when you lift the clay after opening it. I've tried to recreate it since it appears to be very efficient but I've had no luck. Any pointers?
You are right....to cook much in them I found it better to make them deeper...more goodies for the cooker... I loved throwing the knob on the lid...first time I ever tried it...cool..
Hello again....I have been working on these too..it is great to watch a master do them...My last one's lid stuck...kiln over fired...oh well more practice...right?
If you use the correct Terracotta Clay fired to a high enough temperature it's fine on the stove, although Gas is better as some halogen hobs aren't suitable apparently.
How do you get such considerable height in th first pull (the one where you wrao both hands around the clay and essentially collar in)?
When I do as you do, I cannot keep the clay moist enough for me to get much height. I also get deep ridges from my right ring finger digging into the clay.
Tagines are wonderful to cook in. They actually create a cooking environment that is constantly basting the food, which makes meat extremely tender and flavorful.
WOW you made one!!!! you did it so much easier than i did lol, thanks alot for the demo. i feel special now, never had anyone actually make a video to one of my questions!!! i ended up doing ALOT of trimming on mine.
Fantastic video...pottery is a strange kind of alchemy to me, and such a joy to watch the creative process.
