This proves the film has never been released (on vhs or dvd ) in Widescreen, look at the last shot with the black bars and compare with any dvd, in the dvd it cuts off just after his right ear and has another inch or so of wing on his left ear, here there's a load of picture. All video transfers of this film have been adjusted to fit 4:3 which is why this needs a hd master making like Re-Animator & From Beyond.
@trailersic the film was shot in 4:3 and matted to 1.85:1, the old US DVD from Pioneer gave you the option to view the film open matt (4:3) or matted widescreen.
The original Dawn of the Dead was filmed this way as well, so you actually lose picture information at the top and bottom on the widescreen release, as opposed to gaining it at the sides.
Do not distrust me, when it comes to wide-screen, I seriously know what I'm talking about, also I have the double sided dvd in question.
It's not quite as simple as you point out though it is a good point for many films. Films that are shot with the flat 1.33:1 ratio, do so with the intention of it being shown with the top and bottom matted off. BUT some films (especially ones with many special effects, like this and howard the duck) have a hard black matte printed on the film...
...to be sure that the guy in the projection booth doesn't mess it up and show more than he should. These films are cropped to 4:3 on home video to remove the black lines at the top and bottom, usually don't have to Pan & Scan as the cropping is not as severe as from a 2.35:1 anamorphic film. The Pioneer dvd is a transfer made for a laser disc which was adjusted to fit 4:3 they added the black bars as subtitles mistakenly thinking that the whole film was just a transfer of the...
full film picture which it wasn't, this trailer however is a fully untouched open matte transfer. so you see the hard black bars which were printed on the film, plus when the bride is turning round I think you see something too.
4:3 does not always mean open matte, even when dealing with flat shot productions.
