I'm starting to hate Gimp. I used to use it as an alternative to PS but now that I'm looking to get a job in web design, its just not a practical tool.
@jamgrieve if you has said you were getting a job in printed media, working with film or even working with HDR Photos I could have accepted the statement, but WEB Design. Sorry, that is just rubbish Gimp is fully capable of dealing with graphics for the web.
@Electricearlobe Sure, it can stand its own when compared to PS (in some cases) but I don't think that clients/companies would take me seriously if I told them that I strictly used Gimp. You know?
I have Photoshop for my Graphic Design course, but before I got it I preferred Paint.net to anything with Gimp in the title. Even PS loads faster than they did for me.
Otherwise the one crucial thing Gimp still lacks, is the ability to edit in CMYK mode. Industry professionals NEED this for certain jobs, and college professors sometimes ask for images to be edited in it specifically as part of an assignment.
@MikuMikuBeat Yeah i've the same profile problem. However you can try to use the plugin Separate + that converts the profile to CMYK, or you can simply import your works on Scribus and export them for typography ;)
@zfjquery And GIMP does all what >95% people who pirated it, needs for image editing.
In reality, over 90% of the photoshop users could do all their things with GIMP. But PS just has so big fame among people who does not know a thing from image manipulations (editing != manipulation) so they believe they always need PS.
@TheFri13 I don't even remember what I was trying to say. But what i don't like is the modular layout, I mean, photoshop looks great, specially the cs4, and all the windows are part of a major one, while in Gimp they're all floating. And opening several pictures open several windows instead of opening all the pictures in one window. i don't know how to put it on words my english sucks. But I they're taking care of that on the latest release.
@MaghoxFr That is question about opinion. Mostly Windows users hate current stable GIMP function. But only because Windows lack good windowmanager. GIMP was designed for Unix desktops where you have powerfull windowmanager what takes care of the window management. Windows still lack such so users need to use terrible MDI UI instead powerfull SDI UI. You can not even use Expose or other great window manager functions with MDI. Neither you can not use virtualdesktops or multiple monitors.
@TheFri13 Yeah, it's just an opinion, but I like Gimp. I use linux too, I quit windows a year ago, so I run gimp on Gnome. You're right about SDI UI, I really didn't know about it's pros, so I checked them out ;), so thanks. I didn't search what expose is...
What? As if you have to pay money to use Photoshop?
If I use Gimp or any of its derivates, it is because I prefer FOSS and want to run native Linux software rather than having to run software through Wine or VirtualBox. And since I'm not a baggy-eyed photo-editing nerd, the functionality offered is good enough for me.
@proutboy GIMP has very flexible UI. Even more flexible what Adobe Photoshop does. The "bad thing" is that many have heard that PS is the only good to bring good results for image manipulations, were they just cropping, resizing and other very small edits. GIMP main problem for most PS fans is the menus are in different order. While in GIMP they are in logical order. Once you have learn PS, GIMP is just too different. User should itself customize the GIMP UI. It is not hard at all.
lol who cares, this isn't a video about what's better. It's about a tool alternate to photoshop for those users who cannot afford photoshop or do not want to get it illegally.
GIMP is free. Takes like 2-3 minutes to install. Very resource friendly and it takes a few mbs to install. Photoshop , you have to pay for every version. 512-1GB RAM and 1GB+ to install. Plus can do like 60-80% of Photoshop? Even professional photographers use like 5% of Photoshop. Remove imperfections, red eye and cropping.
I saw your video and your menu is built in 2 rows with 16 columns. I can do the same on my macintosh maschine but on windows the menu will not work with 2x16 - all I can do is 3 rows with 11 columns...!?! Hugh? Can you help me? You are using windows arent you? kind regards

@TheFri13 "Neither you can not use virtualdesktops or multiple monitors"
Expands to; 'Not either can you not use virtualdesktops or multiple monitors'
Removing the double negative yields; 'either you can use virtualdesktops or multiple monitors'.
Which, in my opinion, is easier to comprehend.. what do you think?
