Hey Ya'll, This was the year I came into the world and gave my first cry. Thank you for posting these video's to Youtube and haking it possible for all to see and hear xxx
@cosmicrayz1 Actually Ronnie, she is is half Cherokee/African decent as is her sister Estelle, and also her cousin Nedra... The Ronettes were all close and born/raised in NYC, USA.
Hope that I die with the sound of their music in my mind. They are the epitome of the girl groups! No other female band stirred the souls of their fans the way that they did!!
@promerops Yes, I will go as soon as I can make plans. I would likely go to a concert somewhere in or close to New York City. Pittsburg is closer but, I wish to attend a concert in N. Y. City because I wanted to make a stop at Trinity Church Cemetery in order to place flowers, from myself and a couple of fans, upon the grave of Estelle Bennett.
This song inspired the Beach Boys' 'Don't Worry Baby'. Brian Wilson essentially admitted as much when he said, the first time he heard that song, he was driving, and had to pull his car over, he was so overcome. Listen to the two songs. Also, Bobby's song 'Don't Worry, Be Happy' could be put in that category. The Ronnettes are the Dakinis of their time, ....to me anyway.
I remember seeing the Ronetts perform at the Jefferson Hotel in Port Jefferson NY one night. It was a small venue, up close and personal. A friend who was drunk got up on stage and started dancing with Ronnie Spector while she was singing. A trooper, took it in stride and kept singing. Several years later, I was in the jungles of Vietnam and my innocense was lost forever. I also remember seeing the Ronnettes and other Doo Wop groups at the Brooklyn Fox,Murray K"s shows for $3.00 always 10+ acts
@dsfddsgh you are correct in saying that they were different not for the look but the sound, babes spot on ,, they will stand tne time of music today,,R.I.P Estelle,,
Incredible group! Wonderful song! Those of us who had the chance of growing up with this kind of groups thought they would last forever, (at least I did). They will always hold a special place in my heart. I really love this song and always have enjoyed it.
For those of us who came of age at this time (14 in '63?) -- who'd have thought, all these many years later, this great music would still sound as great now as then?
Hi reprax thanks for posting the Ronettes. the sound Quality is real good too! I met Ronnie at the Belly Up Tavern in Solana Beach Ca after one of her shows, she was very nice we talked backstage while she ate a cheeseburger, I had a large pix of the Ronettes and she signed it for me. A real class act and tiny too.
@myboylollipop09 Certain things happen over and over to some people. Some see UFO's or ghosts. I happen to run into people who have met famous singers. (Never met any myself.) I have never met one--ONE!--person who actually spent a little time with Ronnie Spector who ever had anything bad to say about her.
I think when they look for new judges for AMERICAN IDOL it is people like Ronnie that should have the job and not someone like Ellen....just a thought
In 1984 or so, I was in the audience at a small club in Cambridge, Massachusetts and Ronnie kissed me during her cover of The Shangri-Las' "Great Big Kiss."
Fourteen years later, I shared a bill with Ronnie Spector. I tell you, it was probably my greatest rock & roll dream come true--short of sharing a stage with Mick Jagger or Little Richard himself.
Most would have been happy with just the kiss, but i got lucky to play music on the same stage with her.
Ronnie Spector generally puts on one helluva show (especially at Christmastime), and in fact played a show the day after her own mother died.
I know this, because that's the show on which we shared a bill. That's a real trouper, who can play a show under such sad, difficult circumstances.
For Ronnie, the music still matters, which is why she continues to record new material, not merely relying upon her past. And when I was working with her, she had just recorded with Joey Ramone.
As a "once-actually-was" critic, and also onetime singer/songwriter who fronted a band that shared a bill with Ronnie Spector, I can tell you that this other poster to whom you wrote "piss off" has a right to his opinion.
But you are also correct that Ronnie's warm stage personae more than compensates for whatever diminution in vocal qualities she has suffered (and it ain't that much, as one who has seen her perform for over 20 years may attest).
In the 1960's radio stations played these songs 50 times a day.. So when a new song came out ,which was once a week back then, these great oldies dropped out fast. There was an amazing amount of talent and tons of bands in the 1960's, songs didnt stay number one for to long, there was always a new song or band comming up .Everyone knew what the number one song was , does anyone know what the number one pop song is today?
Great song. Flash back to 1973 at the great film Director Martin Scorsese made this song, an even more classic number when `he used it in the soundtrack for Mean Streets. My lady, Foxy Roxy wants to be a back up singer from the 60s in her next life . . . I love it!
The first ever Ronnie Spector Darlene Love A Christmas Gift For You live concerts -Dec 11 Parilla Pac Montgomery College Rockville MD and Dec 17 The Count Basie Theatre Red Bank NJ.
You are correct in one sense, the song "Be My Baby" was released as a single in 1963 (on The Ronettes only Philles LP, "Presenting the Fabulous Ronettes Featuring Veronica," in 1964),.
But this performance is NOT from director Steve Binders 1964 landmark, pop/rock & roll concert showcase film "The T.A.M.I. Show," filmed at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium October 28 & 29, 1964 (due to be released on DVD by Shout! Factory March 23 2010).
"T.A.M.I.," by the way, stood for "Teenage Awards Music International."
Rather, this performance by The Ronettes is from director Larry Peerce's "The Big T.N.T. Show," a sequel, of sorts, to "The T.A.M.I. Show, shot at the Moulin Rouge club in Los Angeles, California on November 29, 1965, released theatrically in 1966 by American International Pictures (AIP, the same company responsible for all those drive-in and "Beach Party" movies). AIP also released "The T.A.M.I. Show."
Where the confusion arises is because "T.A.M.I." and "T.N.T." were re-cut as "That Was Rock" for home video in 1984 (that's eighty-four), with then-new wrap segments by Chuck Berry.
That release is inferior, shows acts out-of-sequence and eliminates others, such as The Barbarians and The Beach Boys, wholesale.
Like "T.A.M.I.," "The Big T.N.T. Show" was executive produced by Henry G. Saperstein, and was likewise shot on videotape and transferred to 35-millimeter film.
Its pre-release title was "This Could Be the Night.[" and the film's theme song was, in fact, called "This Could Be the Night", written by Harry Nilsson, produced by Phil Spector, and performed by The Modern Folk Quartet
There was also a Spector connection to "T.A.M.I.," in that the orchestra was Spector's Gold Star Studios musicians, The Wrecking Crew, under the direction of Jack Nitzsche, himself a Spector associate.
But whereas "T.A.M.I." had The Rolling Stones and James Brown, "T.N.T." featured The Byrds and Ray Charles. Where "T.A.M.I." had Lesley Gore and The Supremes, "T.N.T." had Petula Clark and The Ronettes.
For a 1950s' rock legend, "T.A.M.I." had Chuck Berry, "T.N.T." had Bo Diddley.
Besides The Byrds, Petula Clark and The Ronettes, which are undoubtedly the highlights of "T.N.T.," there is a killer set by The Ike & Tina Turner Revue, which, analogous to "T.A.M.I.," is "T.N.T.'s" James Brown cape routine.
The Byrds, Ray Charles, The Ronettes, and Ike & Tina notwithstanding, the cool edge goes to "T.A.M.I.," though, netting the skateboard-riding Jan & Dean as its hosts, whereas "T.N.T." had an already over-the-hill David McCallum (then co-starring on "The Man From U.N.C.L.E." TV series) as its emcee.
And whereas "T.N.T." had folk and folk-rock acts (Joan Baez, Donovan, The Lovin' Spoonful), "T.A.M.I." had surf rock's two biggest-The Beach Boys and Jan & Dean, plus the obscure garage band from Provincetown, Massachusetts, The Barbarians, and three Motown acts, including its biggest, The Supremes.
You may sometimes catch "T.N.T." on cable TV's American Movie Classics (AMC) , and there are bootleg issues on DVD.
Having "The Big T.N.T. Show" in your collection, along with the superior "T.A.M.I. Show" are essential for any true fans of rock & roll and pop culture cinema.
I heard that Brian Wilson of The Beach Boys was so blown away by "Be My Baby", it inspired him to write an "Answer" song called "Don't Worry Baby". The Ronnettes never got to record it but it was a Hit for The Beach Boys.
YOu have their name spelled wrong....it is THE RONETTES. RON is for Veronica, NE is for Nedra, ES is for Estelle. They came up with the name by combining their 3 names.

@d0wglas9768 yes they sure were and I love the hair styles they wore,a 1960s version of the Edwardian Gibson Girl style and every bit as lovely. The hair and overall look of the three is nice but even better are their voices-pure magic if you ask me.Nedra was my favorite and both sisters I also adored.Classy and refined not like many of those in the here and now.
Hey kf40...That band in New Orleans had to be good. Because it takes a lot to drown out Ronnie these days. Sister Estelle and cousin Nedra bailed on Ronnie in 1967.
