look around and shop you can find cameras that have 10mp now for cheep. I'm a canon guy I got my canon rebel xti for 400 dollars I don't use nikon but have in the past. I know what to look for in a camera based on what you shoot so message me if you want to know more about cameras I'm going to tell you this, stick with ether nikon or canon stay away from the other products. Canon and Nikon are really common. You can find lenses for little to nothing for them and accessories to. well good luck

@heyimdakota doesnt matter that it has 6mpix.... it has full frame matrix and other stuff that maximizes quality... you shouldnt judge camera by megapixels... :) i've been doing a lot of research about nikon d40 and if ur having second thoughts then - go for it! :)

6 megapixels is fine unless your making big prints and just to make you lol a Nikon D40 can take way Superior pictures than a point and shoot because of sensor size and the way it focuses)

The camera is quite okay, it has its limits, but hey, it's the cheapest DSLR in Nikon/Canon line, and the kit lens is very good. Consider buying the cheapest flash (SB-400) and your pictures will be magnificent. Forget the built-in flash, it's is a hard light and makes the typical "shoot on the forehead" type pictures.

Yeah, i accidentally dropped the camera and broke the 18-55mm kit lens so i only have a 55-200mm left. and for the flash, yeah im getting a SB-600, but for now i made a little modification to the build it flash, its just a homemade defuser, and it works amazing.

Don't buy the SB-600 if you won't buy other lenses. The working range of the SB-600 is 24-85mm, so you'd cripple your lens to 55-85mm when flash needed.

I have paired the D40 with an SB-900 (I know, it is strange to buy a flash that is more expensive than the camera), and the result is awesome (but now I have my newest toy, the D90 :-)

yeah it has a built in flash, and it has an external flash port on it, it doesn't come with the external flash.

Nice photographs for a beginner.

I have the D60 and I had it for almost a year and trust me...I am still learning new things about the camera. But for a heads up, don't be afraid to adjust the ISO and shooting in VIVID mode will make your subjects orange, so I always have my camera set to manual and I just shoot in normal mode and adjust the ISO and Shutter speed. But over time, you will become alot better.

Nice job. Once you get used to the auto settings, read up on and try to experiment with the camera's manual settings. You'll see a great improvement in your photos and tweaking the shutter speed and aperture will give a creative edge to some of your photos.
