He has a one good technique while playing. My teacher always said to move my elbowes in order to play a note softer. He's doing it actually without moving his elbowes and looks more professionaly, cause i think that "going all aroud the piano" is rather amateur, and he tries not to do it. Good job, nice, emotional interpretation. Thumbs up!
I do admit some pianist show excess emotion for many peices but a piece of music is suppose to connect with you emotionally to come out perfectly no offence but most of the twitchy korean people i see who play songs perfect tend to sound dull because theres no unintentional Legato or Changing forte to Fortissimo because it's is the climax and you feel your heart rush. Showing faces maybe silly looking but it is his personal experience while playing a song. Respect his interpretation. :P
I love this piece, really, I do. Is he actually playing that? There's no sheet music. That's insane... I wish I could play something like this from memory... ><
@emmeline174 said "Is he actually playing that? There's no sheet music. That's insane... I wish I could play something like this from memory.."
Wow. Memory is the only way I can learn piece like this. Once my hands play it, the muscle memory alone is sufficient. I could not depend on reading sheet music in real time for playing purposes to save my life. Funny how different people work.

@Diabalon You couldn't be more wrong... every scale is hugely different. For example G and A are quite a sad sounding scales where as E ^^ is very bright. The minor scales are almost depressing and C can be used for everything :)
but why is that ? Every scale includes the same number of tones and (what is the world in english- i dont know) semi-tones...... shouldnt every minor scale be the same with every major one?
@Diabalon i think it has something to do with the tuning we use...i think the problem is something about the thirds not sounding right in a tuning where semitones are completely equal. so to make the thirds sound better, each key is made a little bit out of tune so that all the keys sound about equally in tune. this give different keys different tonal qualities based on how exactly they depart from equal tuning. i dont know if thats a good or even completely correct explanation though
I just watched this video. I was amazed to see that 44 did not like it! How come?
It is a wonderful piece of music played very well. There may be other better interpreters of this piece but to say I don't like the video is beyond comprehension.
@crazyghetto978818 Indeed so. To be able to portray emotion, one must feel that emotion. And his facial expressions seem pretty controlled... I've seen some players that the piece practically melts their face off, not that that's a bad thing, hehe.
@crazyghetto978818 Amen...If I am making "weird" faces it means I am in love with whatever I am playing...If I am not doing something physical with my face or body it means 10 times out of 10 I am holding myself back and not in touch with the piece itself or the artistry it takes to perform it to any true level of satisfaction.
@crazyghetto978818 Naw. Sometimes it seems like a lot of pianists make some pretty weird, exaggerated faces in a purposeful attempt to look all intense. Then again, I know in performance when I'm concentrating hard as hell I'm making some sort of face. It probably looks just as weird. lol As long as he plays it beautifully.
@crazyghetto978818 OR, they just look like "weird faces" because most of the pianists on uTube are faking the so called "emotion". Personally, when I play this piece I hardly ever make faces like this, when you are connected to a song, you "understand it", you smile whenever you feel that it touches you, but all this "emotion" I see in this video is purely made up.
@arcimagess This guy isn't just some pianist on youtube, he's a very well famous one. Also, everyone's different, I make faces such as this when I play songs that I am connected to all the time, its not just all made up faces..
@arcimagess How can you make a claim that someone is faking their emotions while performing? U say u can play this piece, yet you feel no emotion. that's probably the difference of why Kempf is a known pianist and you are not. I don't think any pianist "fakes emotion." Even Lang Lang... and I dislike Lang Lang; I feel like he goes over the top when he performs, but hey that's the way he likes to play and i think it's a genuine feeling. Kempf would play the same way without a camera filming.
@JlDsanity Do you have ANY idea what you're talking about? Read my comment please, I never said I didn't feel any emotions. And yes, when these pianists play these pieces in front of the camera, they think of the camera more than they think of the piece itself. Please check Valentina's version and STARE at her. At some point you can see that she looks at the camera with the edge of her eye. You obviously have NO idea how recording a DvD works. It's not about emotions, it's about acting. Face it.
@arcimagess Yea dude I know exactly what im talking about. It's the art of Performing. A professional must realize who theyre performing for. Do I expect Valentina to look at the Camera while performing?YES. Shes being recorded. That's not something you're supposed to ignore. When you perform in front of a crowd or for a crowd, you have to be in a different mode. These Pianists dont put blood sweat and tears into playing piano for "acting", and playing that well is NOT something u can just fake.
@JlDsanity .. You live in your own little world, don't you..? These pianists are a BIG - FAT - FAKE. watch?v=mpiJbQvBP8A, watch Valentina, 1:42, and YOU TELL ME she isn't faking the 'emotions'. And please, don't go "Kempf isn't like that". They are all the same shit, believe me, I know piano and emotions, THIS ISN'T IT. If you play the piano, I hope you get to do a DvD, I really do. That way you'll see that the director doesn't ask for your emotion, but your acting. It's all about it, seriously.
@arcimagess You know what dude? you're absolutely right. If that's what you wanna hear and what will get u to not message me anymore. I got better things to do than argue over stupid shit on Youtube. I Don't even care, cuz it sounds great regardless whether they act or not.
@JlDsanity *Sigh* You were the one that answered to my comment, you dumbass. And no, the point isn't for you to tell me that I am right, cause even if you say it or not, I know I am cause I've lived this kind of stuff, the point is that you UNDERSTAND that you, are, wrong.
@arcimagess Well nobody's wrong here, cuz it's all opinion. You look at it from your point of view and I'll look at it from mine and lets keep it at that. But yes, you are right cuz that that must get u off knowing that you are.
@arcimagess This is an absurd statement. Apparently you've never met any actual musicians who perform on stage in front of cameras or audiences. I'm not great, but I have performed on stage in various contests, been recorded, and I get lost in the music NOT the camera. Of course there are some who worry about the camera, but you are generalizing something that can''t be. Kempf doesn't worry about the camera or the audience. You should honestly meet some musicians, you'd learn a lot.
@arcimagess okay, you wrote this like 2 months or something ago, so sorry if this seems random. Uh, i don't think this is "purely made up". I believe it may have been exaggerated, though. It's not really acting, sometimes maybe a habit.... (but then again, i'm not the person on the video, so obviously, i may be wrong..)
@Ilperon Oh I'm sorry, but I can play the this piece just as well, without the weird faces.
You all guys really need to understand that all those "famous" pianists nowadays, Freddy or Valentina, are real fakers compared to, say, Wilhelm Kempff. You want to see emotion? Go check his video, cause this is full of crap.
Notice how I haven't indicated what side I agree with, because I don't even have an opinion to offer on this. So please don't start grouping me with others.
Everyone has their own way of playing, what matters is the sound that is produced, not the person's facial expressions.
Everyone feels something unique for the same song.
Just because you don't use facial expressions, doesn't necessarily mean that everyone who does is contrived, and fake. That's a rather harsh opinion to have.
Terrible, unemotional interpretation of such a beautiful piece.

And no, the point isn't for you to tell me that I am right, cause even if you say it or not, I know I am cause I've lived this kind of stuff, the point is that you UNDERSTAND that you, are, wrong.
arcimagess 1 year ago
@arcimagess Well nobody's wrong here, cuz it's all opinion. You look at it from your point of view and I'll look at it from mine and lets keep it at that. But yes, you are right cuz that that must get u off knowing that you are.

Really, I believe what I said 100%.

@arcimagess Oh, my apologies. I misread your post there :(
One of my most favorited pieces of music though.
erdavis7 1 year ago
@arcimagess This is an absurd statement. Apparently you've never met any actual musicians who perform on stage in front of cameras or audiences. I'm not great, but I have performed on stage in various contests, been recorded, and I get lost in the music NOT the camera. Of course there are some who worry about the camera, but you are generalizing something that can''t be. Kempf doesn't worry about the camera or the audience. You should honestly meet some musicians, you'd learn a lot.

don´t worry the music is on your heart and is universal!!!!

@arcimagess
Post video of yourself playing please.
Ilperon 9 months ago
@Ilperon Oh I'm sorry, but I can play the this piece just as well, without the weird faces.
You all guys really need to understand that all those "famous" pianists nowadays, Freddy or Valentina, are real fakers compared to, say, Wilhelm Kempff. You want to see emotion? Go check his video, cause this is full of crap.

@arcimagess

@Ilperon Did I say "everyone"? Note the "Famous" pianists nowadays.
arcimagess 8 months ago
@arcimagess
Everyone, meaning you, me, average pianists, to those "famous pianists" and classical greats.
My comment isn't purely based on yours.
