Awesome final, but one suffers for the Hungarians that deserved to gain that worlcup one, since they were the equipment that better soccer did in that championship. Nobody in no other worldcup one has never returned to play thus.

I can see why the 3rd goal from hungary by puskas is not in the film...1,bcuz this documentary made by germany 2, never happened in FIFA or WC history that the referee calls a goal and a minute later says it wasn't...everybody who watched the replay knows that it wasn't offside...by the way most people knows that the german team took some steroids in the half time also...

Yes I completely agree.For such a small country Uruguay has an absolutely fantastic record in International football.They have even won the Copa America more times than Brazil! Only Brazil,Italy,and Germany have a better record and they have huge populations compared to just 3 million for Uruguay.It is quite remarkable.

This Hungary side was the Greatest team never to win the World Cup.The reason why they didnt win has been mentioned by other posters before me:the match was FIXED.I can completely confirm this.When Puskas was manager in Greece in 1970s he became friends with my Uncle who played for AEK Athens. My uncles name is Tasos for those interested.Puskas told my uncle that after Puskas and other Hungarian players fled Hungary in 1956, officials admitted to them that the match was fixed from on high.
Is that right? Fixing a match seems so hard to do though. Was it more likely to be that the ref and linesmen were told to give the Germans as much help as they could. You can't argue that Hungary had loads of chances, Turek played amazingly. They'd also just come through a physical quarter final with Brazil and an extra time marathon v Uruguay. The night before the final they had a brass band competition going on in their hotel until 4am. Hungary were exhausted.

I look forward to that day! It is true that Philip Ling made several 'mistakes' that day at crucial moments in the match, and I'm sure they didn't want a communist nation to win the world cup. It's kind of good that this still generates debate over 50 years later, it adds to the legend of the team. Das war kein Fortschritt für den Fussball! Eine "Holzhackertruppe" hatte gegen die fussballerisch viel besseren "Filigrantechniker" aus Ungarn gewonnen! Deutschland dagegen kann bis dahin sehr stark sein und hat Chancen auf eventuel einen 4. Stern. 2018 ist erst in 7 Jahren und bis dahin kann sich sehr viel aendern. Die halbe Mannschaft wird aus neuen Spielern bestehen.

The goal from Puskas was totally onside, on the second goal from Germany the keeper Grocsis was interfered and there are accusations that the Germans injected vitamins during half-time, Hungary deserved the victory.
IMO Hungary and Austria were the best teams in 1954 but that's just how it goes in the knock out phase of a tournament. Unless the entire tournament is played in a group mode you'll never know who the best truely is.

Yes I completely agree.For such a small country Uruguay has an absolutely fantastic record in International football.They have even won the Copa America more times than Brazil! Only Brazil,Italy,and Germany have a better record and they have huge populations compared to just 3 million for Uruguay.It is quite remarkable.

This Hungary side was the Greatest team never to win the World Cup.The reason why they didnt win has been mentioned by other posters before me:the match was FIXED.I can completely confirm this.When Puskas was manager in Greece in 1970s he became friends with my Uncle who played for AEK Athens. My uncles name is Tasos for those interested.Puskas told my uncle that after Puskas and other Hungarian players fled Hungary in 1956, officials admitted to them that the match was fixed from on high.

Is that right? Fixing a match seems so hard to do though. Was it more likely to be that the ref and linesmen were told to give the Germans as much help as they could. You can't argue that Hungary had loads of chances, Turek played amazingly. They'd also just come through a physical quarter final with Brazil and an extra time marathon v Uruguay. The night before the final they had a brass band competition going on in their hotel until 4am. Hungary were exhausted.

I look forward to that day! It is true that Philip Ling made several 'mistakes' that day at crucial moments in the match, and I'm sure they didn't want a communist nation to win the world cup. It's kind of good that this still generates debate over 50 years later, it adds to the legend of the team. The disintegration of the Hungarian set up after 1956 with Sebes demoted and the players exiled was sad for the game, but makes the era all the more vivid.

Where are all the Hungarian goalscoring opportunities? They had loads of them :o why ony show the german ones which are only a few anyway.
Pity there's no good shot of the offside goal and no video of the supposed foul in the penalty area on kocsis.

Das war kein Fortschritt für den Fussball! Eine "Holzhackertruppe" hatte gegen die fussballerisch viel besseren "Filigrantechniker" aus Ungarn gewonnen! Das hat bis in die 80er Schule gemacht und den Fussbal um Jahrzehnte zurückgeworfen und unaktraktive WM-Tuniere gefördert, ausser die Brasilianer oder Argentinier waren so überlegen, dass der Ergebnissfussball auf der Strecke blieb.

Am Beispiel Spanien oder Frankreich kann man sehr schön sehen, dass eine Fußballnation erst einmal einen "Leidensweg" hinter sich bringen muss, um dann endlich am Ziel zu sein. Daraus schliesse ich, dass Deutschland auch so einen vor sich hat! Bei der WM in Deutschland waren sie nah dran, in SA hätten sie es verdient gehabt, 2014 wird es Brasilien ( Rechnung von 1950) Also 2018 in Russland kommt der vierte Stern! Garantiert

@TheFritzthecat Brasilien ist gar nicht so gut. Ich glaube nicht das sie es schaffen werden 2014 Weltmeister zu werden. Deutschland dagegen kann bis dahin sehr stark sein und hat Chancen auf eventuel einen 4. Stern. 2018 ist erst in 7 Jahren und bis dahin kann sich sehr viel aendern. Die halbe Mannschaft wird aus neuen Spielern bestehen.

@TheFritzthecat Die WM ist in 3 jahren. Um eine super mannschaft zu haben, muessten sie die ganze mannschaft gegen andere spieler wechseln. Ich hab einige spiele deren U 19, 20, 21 gesehen was so gesehen die naechste generation ist, und die haben nichts gezeigt. Schoen Samba fussball, aber keine erfolge. Sogar U20 Kanada hat sie mit 3:2 geschlagen. Eine chance besteht immer das sie gewinnen koennen, aber im moment sind diese chancen niedrig da Spanien, Holland, Deutschland die starken sind

Bei der EM 2000 sind sie noch sang und klanglos in der Vorrunde ausgeschieden und die fast gleiche Gurkentruppe stieß bei der WM2002 (zwar ungerechter Weise) aber doch bis ins Finale vor! Das waren gerade einmal 2 Jahre und Du wirst jawohl nicht abstreiten können, dass die Fussballnation Nr. 1 Brasilien nicht auch so etwas hinkriegen könnte!

Die hatten alle Stars wie Ronaldo, Cafu, Rivaldo, Roberto Carlos und so. Jetzt sind 10 Jahre vergangen und deren Zeit ist erstmals abgelaufen. Die werden schon wieder Stark sein, aber nicht in den naechsten paar Jahren. Deutschland, Spanien und Holland haben sich in der zwischenzeit verbessert und sind jetzt die Starken.

@norsunny I would argue #1 since Germany fielded a team of reserves who were playing at half-throttle. I haven't seen the footage showing whether Puskas was offside so I can't make a value judgement - if you have seen it, care to pass the link? As for #3, the study does NOT conclusively prove that Germans were high. It says players were given vitaminC as placebo for recovering from fatigue and some needles were ALLEGEDLY not cleansed from prior use (amphetamines). There has been no new evidence.

They were the best team in the world back then but they are the ones to blame for their failures in the final. In the 70's Germany and the netherlands were both very strong teams but Germany was a little better. Chechoslovakia never had a super amazing team and the germans were already to strong for them.

IMO Hungary and Austria were the best teams in 1954 but that's just how it goes in the knock out phase of a tournament. Unless the entire tournament is played in a group mode you'll never know who the best truely is.

@WOB101 Unlucky for you I am not. Fritz Walter, Ottmar Walter, Morlock, Rahn, Mai, Kubsch, Herkenrath got hepatis after that game. In march 1955 all, I mean ALL the players that played the final (except Posipal, Liebrich and Kohlmeyer) claimed to be "injuried". During the world cup first fase (14 days earlier) Germany lost (yes I'm not kidding) 8 -3 against the same Hungary. Germany players would be unable to repeat their performance ever again after that game.
