A slim jim gives far better coverage & much lower radiation angle. The "splitter" as you call it can be made from two pieces of 75ohm coax and a T connector to the 50ohm. The SWR you see is the input the the matching/splitter unit, not that of the aerials, so they can still be inefficient at either end of the band through not being resonant.
