  • why is the a soloist voice? what happened? why didn't maria sing it?

  • maria sings it in the movie version, it supposed to be a soloist is the stage version

  • It's supposed to be an off-stage solo, a kind of narration to the dancing that goes on during this part. Jerome Robbins choreographed a ballet for Tony and Maria and two other couples to be performed during this song in the original production. Thematically, the fact that it is sung by a disembodied voice emphasizes the fantasy element of the sequence.

  • They imagin a dream world where they can be together. So a disabody voice makes perfect since in a dream world

  • no nightmare sequence? i was waiting for the notes to turn dissonancy and the dream to go sour, but i guess it was cut
