Sounds easy and effortless.I have played with many bone players, none can even come close to the ease and and control delivered here. He taught Sinatra much of what he knew about breath control and long phrases.
When TD told Frank Sinatra that he needed to work more on his breath control, Frank listened. That is just one of the reasons Frank was such a good singer in his era.Tommy Dorsey knew his music.
absolutely one of the most underrated jazz musicians of all time. this and "song of india" set the standard for future breath control & range phenoms like watrous and green.
This is USA World War II music. Young people today may not understand it, but they don't understand the violence, fears, and intensity of WWII. People, including the US Military, needed this music to step back from the war, if only for a few minutes. My grandmother and dad liked this, and so do I.
Thanks to 6661029 for posting this. Dorsey had the sweetest sound on the trombone I ever heard. I can't believe someone actually disliked this clip. I guess making a "thumbs down" is so easy, even a cave man can do it.
I have been playing the trombone for over 24 years and I still listen to this a couple times a week. Its Pure Perfection. I hope to play this well someday.
My Mom and Dad danced to this music on their wedding day in 1942 - the day after Doolittle's raid on Tokyo. It is arguably one of the finest works of an American composer. My Dad made it back from the war in Italy and together my mother and father raised a wonderful family. God Bless America!
Thanks to TV shows such as "Dancing With The Stars", this beautiful music is making an astounding comeback. I play baritone sax in the "Moonlight Serenaders" big band, in Akron, Ohio, and our schedule is becoming busier every year. Interestingly, the audiences are mostly younger folks, in addition to the seniors. This is the most beautiful and most relaxing music ever recorded, and that's coming from a fan of '50s and '60s rock and roll.
@sevenlitre Just been listening to a double LP called "This Is Tommy Dorsey" & it's great.Contains 20 tracks, including this track,"Star Dust'/ "Marie"/ "Song Of India'/ "Josephine" / "Boogie Woogie'.This is a wonderful LP & i play it on my 38yo Thorens turnable, which sounds great. What a fantastic sound & those arrangements are amazing. It would have been out of this world,to have seen him live. It's good to see some people keeping his sound & memory alive.
My Dad used to play this on the trombone as my Mom accompanied him on the piano. They were married in 1943 and he passed away in 2005...she was at his bedside...still madly in love and married.
Recorded this with my landlord playing piano to play at my wedding for the groom/bride dance...lost the tape since then wish I still had it. Played it in B flat which is wrong should be in D but I couldn't hit the high notes then in that key...came out good and I'm still married!
@Nabokov50 if you watch the full movie clips of "A Song is Born" he performs the solo part of this live, then speeds it up into "Marie". That's probably the closest you're gonna find to a live performance on here, that I know of

I was just a child when my parents played this on the phono, and Tommy, Harry and Glenn were the absolute best. But, Artie Shaw was a genius.

anybody have tips to get a sound like this, long tones with a slow to fast vibrato, what?
Guitarhreomaster16 1 month ago
@Guitarhreomaster16 He's using a slide vibrato. As in, moving the slide down slightly and then back up to the note.

Being a trombone player myself i know first hand how hard it is to play like that with that amount of expression.

@coletranelover I figured out what key it is in, D. Goes up to a high C# in the beginning, if your chops aren't in shape forget about it.
