I discovered Shenmue few months ago and it was a total shock ! How can such an "old game" can be so "out of time" and so beautiful. I finished Shenmue I and II in 3 months and it is my best videogames experience !
By far one of the best games I ever beat in my life! Too bad I was crushed and heartbroken at the end if you know what I mean? It comes with a passport for a reason. I still have to beat no.2, am debating about getting a japanese dreamcast and hit it all original sega rules forever way, or just pick up a copy on x-box?
I think we all need to become a lot more fucking structured with our complaints. Bitching on a youtube video isn't going to do shit. Seriously, Everyone write Sega and tell if we do not get it, we fucking riot! The loudest wheel gets the oil, complain to Sega damnit! Games like this are a dying fucking breed, all these companies now do is remark old games and shit out FPS's left and right.
They must at sega as a duty to fans remake this on ps3 xbox format. It's just that good. And while they're at it get snatchers on the megacd remade too.
Yes, I agree with comments. This is hands down the best game ever made. I skipped school to play this game back in the day. I never played the sequels so they may be better. But, this game was just sweet!!!

One of my teachers told me i loved them out of nostalgia, but i don't agree. Back then, they made games that talked to me... they didn't just make them to be fun, but to be interesting and fascinating too. Now, it seems like games are being made with mathematical equations to find out how they could sell the most (Well, North American games anyway)... and i find it kinda sad...

Every time I watch this opening scene I feel like playing the game, but I can never bring myself to become attached to the characters again only to have the story end in a cliffhanger.
Hopefully some day we can get a conclusion, either in game form or some other way.
this proves the dreamcast was way ahead of its time. this game has real time shadows and real time shadow casting, acceptional graphics. and overall it just feels like a movie. Sega had it all right =/

They should definetely make part 3 because Ryo has to avenge his father and on his journey hes learning moves and techniques that help make him stronger. I have part 1and 2 in japanese on dreamcast and was extremely angry when a third was never released. I pray it comes out one day-the epicness of this game goes right up there with Mass Effect-its not a game its an experience.
@TopTenCrew heh.. that game looked up to this game. except GTA4 was just retarded, u just go around and do like tons and tons of missions... it gets so repetitive and i end up giving it away to my crack head friends. shenmue actually has an interesting storyline and it keeps you playing until the dissapointing ending. The only good thing about Shenmue is the weather system. The rest of the game was boring. GTA has a great story, good action, missions could be better, great graphics, and is overall a great game.
Dreamcast and shenmue were way ahead of their time...dont think a game rivaled the facial animations until Metal gear solid 2. Wish they'd hurry up and get a company to make the 3rd one...its been like 8/9 years

Just saying, to all those who want Shenmue 3 you should check out (if you haven't yet) Sega's Yakuza series on ps2 and ps3. They basically are a more evolved form of Shenmue and while it's not the same as getting closure to an old series, the gameplay and ideas of Shenmue are much more fully realized in the Yakuza series.
@brunoiwa Saints Row, Saints Row 2, inFamous (has more detail than it) Saw the game, Prototype, even fallout, and Shenmue was made in 1999 for crying out loud there's more but i cant think of them now.
People can make Shenmue 3 happen , unfortunately there is not nearly a patch on enough people at the moment to get Sega taking us seriously. Lots of people = Profit to businesses like Sega and they have to think financially sadly after bad times not long ago. We need 500k to a few million Shenmue fans/ gamers to really do something, but it's not impossible as some people are saying.

The problem is, the graphics engine and the tools they used to create the game -and all of its minigames- are ridiculously outdated now. Creating Shenmue 3 is likely far more costly than they could ever get returns on. The Yakuza engine is an updated version of the engine, but it doesn't hold up to todays standards by a long shot. So they either use a different engine, or release a gimped game for fans - all of which cost > benefit for Sega. Maybe it's better this way :(
I totally agree with you..this was the best game ever..I would spend 500 bucks on a new system to play Shenmue 3 god I miss games like this..I'm gonna buy Yakuza 3 because I heard it was the reincarnation of Shenmue. Can't wait!

I wanted that game so fucking bad. I'm actually playing through Shenmue II again right now out of nostalgia. I just finished disc 3, but I'm not sure if I wanna play through disc 4 because the ending was so unsatisfying.

I wish they would remake this for GameCube, Xbox, PS2/3, anything.. this game was so amazing, I remember being is suspense watching these cutscenes, such a good game, one of the best games ever made if not THE best.
All I say if SEGA do make a Shenmue 3 they should stick with the PS3 to get the best visuals in HD and to have all of it put onto a dual-layer blu-ray disc.

@AxleGear89 So True. PS2 & Dream Cast are the same level. But, Sony was main stream back then (still is) so people will see their products more. However, with the Dream Cast, only old school (hard core)gamers really knew about it. Dead or Alive2 looks hot on Dream Cast & Shenmue is still breath taking to this day (for a game over 10 yrsold). The Dream Cast had POWER - just look at RE CodeVeronica (before Veronica X came out for PS2). And MARVEL VS CAPCOM has no load times on Dream Cast...
Yu Suzuki should have finished this...but he left Sega. Ryo ended up in the Sega All-Stars Racing game, and we are left with no sequel...the only spiritual successor is Yakuza...go figure...

Shenmue is truly a masterpiece. Beat that game entirely about 4 times, considering bringing out my Dreamcast for one more time just for Shenmue.

Just saying, to all those who want Shenmue 3 you should check out (if you haven't yet) Sega's Yakuza series on ps2 and ps3. They basically are a more evolved form of Shenmue and while it's not the same as getting closure to an old series, the gameplay and ideas of Shenmue are much more fully realized in the Yakuza series.

People can make Shenmue 3 happen , unfortunately there is not nearly a patch on enough people at the moment to get Sega taking us seriously. Lots of people = Profit to businesses like Sega and they have to think financially sadly after bad times not long ago. We need 500k to a few million Shenmue fans/ gamers to really do something, but it's not impossible as some people are saying.
Go to Facebook and join the Shenmue 500 k group and believe we can make something happen!

The problem is, the graphics engine and the tools they used to create the game -and all of its minigames- are ridiculously outdated now. Creating Shenmue 3 is likely far more costly than they could ever get returns on. The Yakuza engine is an updated version of the engine, but it doesn't hold up to todays standards by a long shot. So they either use a different engine, or release a gimped game for fans - all of which cost > benefit for Sega. Maybe it's better this way :(

I wanted that game so fucking bad. I'm actually playing through Shenmue II again right now out of nostalgia. I just finished disc 3, but I'm not sure if I wanna play through disc 4 because the ending was so unsatisfying.

the only reason why we'll never seen a shenmue 3 is quite simple...the shenmue saga was quite a disaster -even if imho is the best game ever made- and sega has told fans many times that now people wants other kind of games and a shenmue 3 will cost too much money that sega don't have at the moment and don't want to risk anymore investing on a shenmue 3...but i'll hope too for a shenmue 3...

All I say if SEGA do make a Shenmue 3 they should stick with the PS3 to get the best visuals in HD and to have all of it put onto a dual-layer blu-ray disc.

@AxleGear89 So True. PS2 & Dream Cast are the same level. But, Sony was main stream back then (still is) so people will see their products more. However, with the Dream Cast, only old school (hard core)gamers really knew about it. Dead or Alive2 looks hot on Dream Cast & Shenmue is still breath taking to this day (for a game over 10 yrsold). The Dream Cast had POWER - just look at RE CodeVeronica (before Veronica X came out for PS2). And MARVEL VS CAPCOM has no load times on Dream Cast...

Yu Suzuki should have finished this...but he left Sega. Ryo ended up in the Sega All-Stars Racing game, and we are left with no sequel...the only spiritual successor is Yakuza...go figure...

I love this intro.
I really was impressed when I saw it first time in a game shop ....
then I bought a Dreamcast....only for Shenmue.
I have never regretted it.
Even today I would buy a new system just to play Shenmue 3. This series is more worth than most of the games today!!
