I was stationed at Osan AB back in '95-96. I used to love watching those A10s when I wasn't deployed for some exercise or partying in Songtan with the "juicy girls" and whatnot. Paradise for a 20 yr old back in the day besides the fact that you're a speedbump if the North ever gets the go ahead to invade from bigger brother.

some of these pilots are fuckin amazing - those gatling guns spew out so much ammo they HAVE to be accurate - i think they can waste all their ammo in under a minute if i remeber rightly...either way its somethin stupidly insane...

but like some pilots with hellfire missiles can be so accurate as to fire the missile through the window of a building...that shits crazy!

The M-61 in the F-18 Hornet is a 20mm vulcan cannon, six barrels, capable of a cyclic rate of about 2000 rounds per minute, and holds about 500 rounds. The GAU-8/A Avenger is a 30mm Gatling type rotary cannon, capable of nearly 4,000 rounds per minute, has 7 barrels, and as Eurotrash4367 corrected me, has a combat load of about 1150 rounds. At the root, the Hornet was designed as a fighter and equipped with a gun. The Avenger was designed as a gun they then built an attack fighter around.

The new A-10C has been refitted for all the new precision weapons. Improved engines and wings are in the works. I'm an A-10C weapons loader just returned from AL-Asad AB, Iraq. For the record, everything posted by lyingbastard is correct with 1 correction. The capacity of the 30mm GAU-8 is 1174 rounds, not 1200. We only put 1150 rounds into the plane for combat.

No, they aren't. They're scheduled to stay in service until 2028, because there aren't going to be enough F-22s and F-35s to cover the Air Forces obligations. Hell, the F-35 won't even enter service until 2013. There is a modernization plan to upgrade the existing Warthogs to extend their service life, the program is called "Hog Up" and is directed by USAF Lt. Col. Don Henry.

great jet sucks to work on i'm here in Korea at Osan AB as a Weapons loader on that and that gun is a nasty nasty thing and it takes forever to take out and put back up isn't really that great of a jet to work on they want to get rid of it but there is no other jet with the 30mm gun on it so thats the only reason they are keeping it around

Most (54% or so) of those Chinese tanks are T-54s, which are Korean War vintage, not adequate against modern battle tanks. Besides that, each Warthog carries 1,200 rounds. If they were to put 50 rounds into a tank, which is severe overkill, those 400 aircraft could destroy 9,600 tanks without needing to come back and reload.
