Yes, they did know about the dangers of smoking back in this time. I am not old enough to remember this commercial, but I can tell you my mother had a medical book that was written in 1950 and it mentioned smoking was bad for the health. People (even doctors) just didn't want to believe it then.

@llieber100 I am a pipe smoker but I agree, actually the first link between (pipe) smoking and (lip) cancer was in 1795 179 years before the first sugeon generals warning on smoking, however at that time people didn't believe the doctor who made that link.

I kid you not,back in 2001 my brother Sean's doctor was a Camel cigarette smoker. You'll NEVER see em smoking Camels inside a hospital,but in a rare break outside,the doctors outside would enjoy thier Camels.

Nowadays doctors will prescribe Chantix to quit smoking, which can cause you to have terrifying dreams about dying from malignant lung cancer until you wake up in a depression so deep you decide to commit suicide. Chantix. The only anti-smoking medication that has a list of dangerous side effects longer than those of cigarettes. More doctors' patients smoke themselves from Chantix than from Camels.

@stealthsatrist07 thank you. I've known 3 people who used chantix to try and quit but had bad side effects. The people that I know who quit and stayed quit did it the old fashioned way. Cold Turkey is the best way to go. Until the day comes that you don't want to smoke more than you want one,nothing is going to work

After reading some of the comments on here, I can't help but make a comment of my own. This is NOT a skit, This NOT a comedy sketch, this is how things were back then. Obviously, you can't get away with that kind of advertising today. THAT is why they give out so many dawm coupons and free stuff from the Morolboro catalog. This is just an example of how peole atitudes and minds change over time. I am not saying that it is good or bad or indifferent. It is what it is.

"The pleasing mildness of a camel is just as enjoyable to a doctor as it is to you or me"- camels aren't pleasing or mild, take it from a guy that lives in israel. Don't smoke, there's enough air pollution to kill you, you don't need any more excuses to die. Plus nowdays, most doctors don't smoke.
