One VERY important thing to keep in mind before you dump your land line phone for a cellphone. If you have to call 9-1-1 in an emergency and are unable to speak or give an address emergency services CANNOT locate you. With a land line phone...even if you can't speak they can locate exactly where you are. Instead try unlimited land line phone service and basic pay as you go cellphones to be used only when you are out or when you need "backup" phone service at home. (such as power outages)
The Christmas tip is actually a really good one. After Christmas (or any holiday) I buy that stuff at 90-95% off, keep it until summer, and sell it on my garage sales for around half of what it originally retailed for. I do the same thing at auctions, buy large lots of things that nobody else wants, sort it out at home, and have garage sales with it at almost pure profit.
maybe if more people listened to these cheap people 3 years ago, maybe they would not be losing their house right now,how about never eating out,and forgoing on xmas and all holidays for just 1 year, you would save thousands and thousands of dollers, how about we just give up holidays all together,if someone wants something, buy it yourself with your own money
The planning your grocery shopping 1 time a week thing is right on the money. I save at least $30 - $100 a week by doing it that way. Although I buy whatever I want regardless of price, I simply plan for the week - and I automatically save. I also throw out less food, and spend a little less on gas too.
Dump your cell phone plan, dump your internet plan and all cable TV...go out to the beach everyday and surf or swim, or go golfing, any hobby you enjoy. Spend money only on food and on occasion spend some money for yourself once every 4 to 5 months! Problem solved!!!
I have never once responded to a youtube video (though I am a youtubeaholic), but I must admit: that "I saved more money by switching to Geico" was downright hilarious. Thanks for making me laugh!!
My husband and I love pre-paid phones. Especially since he works out of state 90% of the time. We have pre-paid phones with mobile to mobile. We chose Cingular since the majority of our friends and all of our families use that service. It costs us about $30 every 3 or 4 months total.
@MrEnergyCzar Your video is great! Thanks for sharing it. I only watched one - it would be great if you could summarize what each of the upgrades you did cost you.
We also love T-Mobile - we promote them on our web site and have 2 of their prepaid phones.
Those entertainment books are awesome! Not only do we use them when eating out or going to a movie, we used it on a rental car when our car broke down. And a word of advice about coupons, only use the ones that are for your normal purchases. Don't use a coupon just because you have it. Then you are just spending more and not saving.
were can you get coupon deals and such. I wanna be a couponer. Ive tried a coupon book and I saved alot big time. I need site where I can pay 10 bucks or something a year or month and save huge amounts of money. Private message me or send me link or add me. Thanks - Canadian too - Ontario
Think people would appreciate this no matter when it was posted. In fact , it should be on people's mind even more now. Not only do you do it, but you share it and get some fame and fortune from it!
Wednesday, 1/28/09. Looks like this was posted 1/19/07, (2) years ago already. They are talking about Christmas of 2006. I was just curious about the date of the video. I didn' t see or hear anything while watching the video. I'm assuming the posting date is the one listed under MavinOfSavin.
I've read articles where people diss this family out saying they aren't impressive or if they want to be frugal don't have so many kids or don't have kids. What's funny is that I've read and even heard kids to adults who come from 1-2.5 kid house holds tell me their parent's will spend hords of money on clothes, cars boats. But when it came to school they wouldn't give a dime. Yet a large family that's frugal can send all their kids to college.
For some people not paying for their kids college teaches the kids the old fashioned pay your own way. It's a tough love approach that sometimes works.
How is it teaching kids a lesson about money if they are so in debt up to their eye balls? All it teaches them is when they get out to do the same thing. Funny thing is the parents will be bitching talking about they never taught their children to be so crazy with money.
@TVwriter23 Some kids sink, and some kids SWIM. If they made good grades, the would try to get scholarships. If not join the military to pay, work their way through, or take the minium loans and pay them back. RESPONSIBILITY.
@imhotep1 Funny true story: a somewhat "wealthy" couple that live in my town bought the dilapitated house next door to me. The wife told me their flipping it to pay for their son's college. Their idea of flipping is to slap paint on the house, but they didn't bother to scrape it all the way first, put new shingles on without realizing half the roof was rotted and there's wasps nests underneith, and then leaving it half painted for weeks at a time because their kids "didn't feel like it".
These are great tips, but they are things that I've done for EVER!! Of course there has to be a book because there are SO MANY more ways to save - little things add up even MORE!
I love to share savings ideas with people, but I'd rather show than tell...see my youtube channel.
I also do extreme couponing and have done several videos myself. I think its great her husband loves shopping just as much as she does.
I get my kids to help me clip and we sit down and use this time to talk to each other about our day or just about what ever they want. They help and I listen.
Love these people's approach. America's in the mess it's in now over wanting things now that they can't afford and the allure of electronic gadgets and pretty cars, both of which depreciate faster than water can go down the drain of a shower.
money is not everything!!!!the basic concept of life is to suvive as frugal as you can....and still have a nice bank account. your message probally comes from a person who pays full price for everything?????!!!!

Too many people want to live rich when they should be saving and investing to get there. Plus you can have both. Just because somethings not what you want doesn't mean it's not what others want or that either is wrong.
