Wow. A little while ago I was listening to the studio album version in my car. Hearing this version makes me understand and fully appreciate true immensity of Jeff Tweedy's already enormous talent as an artist and as a musician.
Awesome. Just awesome. Unbelievably awesome talent.
Well I'm going to see Jeff's solo show here in MN at the end of March, and I requested "Muzzle of Bees," which is my favourite Wilco song, but I'll be so happy if he plays this.
Actually, I saw Wilco perform this song several times in 2002 on the YHF tour, and this is the original arrange
ment of the song. They rearranged it two years later for A Ghost is Born to the version most are familiar with. I'm pretty stoked to hear a return to the original idea.
I had a hard time enjoying the original version of this song, but this is an amazing version, so different from the record. Now I love both versions. 2 for 1, thanks Jeff!!
It's very funny, I've seen Wilco/Tweedy about 6 times now, and the audiences have always been very sedate. Into it, but not overly excited. Which is cool, except when I am singing along with the songs I love and people are looking at me with complete disdain!
Day0f, I THINK (but I could be wrong) that it's a Crowther Prunes and Custard. I know Jeff has/had one on his pedalboard, and it sounds to me at least like he's using it in this song.
Well, the cool thing to me about these acoustic shows is this... is this how the song started out with Jeff on his couch with his acoustic guitar, and then it grew on the road and in the studio into this grand recorded version and became this epic song at Wilco shows? Now that's something.
That's not far off. There are acoustic versions of this that sound very much the same dating back to 1996, if I'm not mistaken. This was a song that he'd done in solo venues as well as with the various Wilco incarnations over the years. It wasn't until the band experimented in the "Ghost" sessions that they came up with that brutally bracing electric version. Both are equally legit versions IMHO and convey distinctly different moods.
why does there need to be clapping? Why? Why can't you just enjoy the beauty of the music. It creates a better experience imo. Its annoying as hell when you go to a show like this and there is some cracked out sorority girl on adderall talkin her ass off during the whole show.
i think he's jokingly saying this because the album/full band ensemble version is pretty heavy on audience interaction.....this version is just gorgeous.
You're one of those clap happy idiots aren't you? Since we're online, there is no need to get embarrassed; but I should tell you, clapping just ain't cool. It's a pain in the ass :(
i'll be one to say that i prefer the a ghost is born version. however, this is a really cool change up, it'd be interesting to hear a studio version of it in this manner.
Such a great version! "Spiders" is one of my favourite songs from the album, and it's so cool to hear it like this.
I love when Jeff takes an song from an album and completely changes it. Consider the difference between the version of "Sunken Treasure" on Being There and the version which appeared in the movie "I Am Trying To Break Your Heart," which is pretty much the way they do it now.
This is the way I remember originally hearing this. Wilco played it this way at Bumbershoot in Seattle in 2002 and I will *always* love this version. So much better (IMO) than what's on A Ghost is Born. Thanks for posting!!

Wilco played a version similar to this in Savannah Georgia. It was my first time hearing it performed acoustically, I was utterly blown away.

I was joking about clapping, haha.
But what crowded beach in Michigan do you think he's talking about? I would think he would be talking about something on the West Coast of MI.
Any ideas???
hellakooked 2 years ago
@hellakooked It's not a "crowded beach in Michigan." It's on a "private" beach.

Hahaha why the hell would you clap along to this? What good could that possibly do a quiet thoughtful acoustic song like this one?

And the songs keep evolving, changing a little every time they elbow their way back onto the setlist.

agreed with this played with live. cline's soloing kicks my ass.

Why didn't they do it like this on A Ghost is Born? I think it's so much better an acoustic song.

I have a bootleg of that Bumbershoot show, and I was thrilled to hear him perform this arrangement at the show.
On the other hand, though, hearing Wilco tear through Spiders live, especially lately, is the closest you'll ever get to seeing God.

Amen to that!!

i've not experienced this version until now - beautiful ...

Yeah...I heard it this way before A Ghost Is Born and remember being somewhat disappointed that it didn't appear on the album in this arrangement.

Once I saw him grab a lump of coal and squeeze it with his fist. A few moments later, he gave me a diamond.
