Thanks for the video! I always notice in the video, that you like to fill the portafilter up with coffee then level it before tamping. How can you be sure that you have 7g for single or 14g for double (if that matters...)
@alessm We're not that focused on that, we just fill to the brim and then level with a little divot in the middle (really just the curve of the knuckle). Lots of folks do weigh out their beans beforehand or calibrate their dosage for a specific amount -- I really feel it's personal preference. - Kat
Really like what you're doing too! I had the Rocky in mind but I found a great deal on the Super Jolly with a machine/grinder combo package. I didn't think I'd be able to invest in a Mazzer just yet but I got lucky. The Mini Electronic Type A looks awesome but the price! A bit much. However the buttons are undeniably cool! Keep up the good work.
Yeah I think I have a preference for the Mini E because I like the programmable dosing. The Super Jolly is an awesome grinder, though, so glad you got a good deal on it! - Kat
I love the way the new model mazzers look.. Ive got an older model Major, and while I will NEVER give it up, I wouldnt mind something that looks beautiful.
Are you guys SURE the hoppers aren't interchangeable? Ive got the large hopper for my major, and I know for 100% that both of the regular Mini, and the new shorter Mini hopper fit without any modification, whatsoever. Maybe try fitting them without any beans in the throat?
@JmanEspresso The Major/Kony/Robur throats are slightly larger than the Mini or Super Jolly so the Mini hoppers (short and standard) WILL fit the SJ but NOT the Major or others listed above.
in holland we have a thing called sinterklaas, Actors dressed as the Saint and his black-faced helpers ( mediaeval youths habit of blacking up their faces so as not to be recognisable when begging ) Zwarte Pieten enter each town in large, bombastic processions. The Saint rides a white horse and his helpers poke fun at bystanders and throw small ginger biscuits pepernoten around them.
Try the single dose grinding method. Buy a small digital scale and weigh 16g. Pour beans in the hopper. Sweep out the chute before the timer stops. Same dose every time and NO stale coffee. Simple.
your method only works if you have 1 or 2 cups to make, having friends/family over, these types of grinders are a musthave or you'll spend hours in the kitchen balancing. 2 avoid stale coffee i do prefer a plastic (antistatic polymer) doser and ceramic burr grinders over steel. less steel contact on the inside is beter i think.
Im gonna have to agree with Endo here, Single shot dosing works wonderfully. NO waste from: Purging, over grinding, finger-swipe levelling, and NO stale coffee. For about every 1lb of coffee, you'll gain anywhere from 2-10 shots, depending on your methods. As for speed, unless its your first day using the scale, you can easily turn out drinks, back to to back, without a problem. I do it all the time. You can also pre-wiegh any number of doses, and add them as you go.

@dennisawalsh Hmmm... Sorry, I don't. I would check with Mazzer directly to see if there is anyone importing the black versions into the UK. - Kat

Spooky, I've got a SJ, and have just brought a 400g hopper from a mini. It just fit right in..
Like what you are doing!

Strange! Maybe there's some differences in US/European hoppers? Been known to happen :) - Kat

Yes, we went through and remeasured and re-fit them and the mini's short hopper will fit in the Jolly. Sorry about the miscom! - Kat

If I'm doing more than 2 drinks, I use the PF leveling method. Sweep out only on the last shot.
