What's not to love? Even when they don't listen and are VERY stubborn they are so funny you cant stay mad at them. My cairn is the best and my own personal clown. LOVE MY CRAZY BUG!!!
Smart, loyal, and full of life. They are wonderful dogs (but you need to train them properly...). I've had one for 10 years and my family has had them for over 30 years. Loved every single one!
I absoulutely fell in love with this breed! My Cairn is called Big Ben and I guess he's a typicall example for this breed: He's very very funny and intelligent and he loves chasing the tennis ball ;)
I love him so much and I can't even imagin a life without a Cairn - they're an amzing breed!!
My Cairn, Boom-Boom, is an amazing one-dog family pet. Around other dogs she can get very aggressive. It is very unusual, one moment she is playing and loving on the other dogs, and the next she attacks. When she plays with humans she can get a little rough so I understand why it suggests older children.
This video misrepresents Cairns. There is absolutely no call for Cairns to be as noisy , yappy as the dogs shown here. I have always had Cairns and they are disciplined not to bark constantly. I really resent the image this video presents about how yappy these undisciplined Cairns are. Also, my Cairns get along fine with young children.
I suppose that depends on what you want. As a child I had Westies but I have a Cairn now. He's 4 and he never shuts up. I live in the country so it isn't a problem.
How do you discipline your dog? I hope to hell you're not going to come out with crap like physical discipline or shock collars. If you do I'll call you names.
And why do you need a dog to be subservient? S/he's a dog...they bark! Get used to it.

...except it doesn't mention that they are prone to skin issues, as they have a very intense two-layer coat that was bred for the damp cold of the Scottish highlands. Ours needed medical shampoo but still had flare-ups of eczema. It might be a good question to ask your breeder.

im going to get a cairn terrier but i hav some questions r they cute??? r thet easy to train???im not good with aggresive dogs????? i want a sweet dog that will follow me everywhere and a good running partner. is the cairn terrier right for me???if u dont think so plz give me some other ideas of dogs that would be good
@Azurithe hi ^^ i have a cairn terrier, hes name is Spike. They are so cute, and they are easy to train, but as they said in this show they are a bit stubborn. My dog is not aggresive, that axtaly depends on the dogs "master". And i think the cairn terrier is the right dog for you ^^
I grew up with a Cairn and he was great. What an amazing hunter too! Our neighbourhood was rat-free after he showed up. Very intelligent, affectionate and independent (those last two aren't contradictions when you're talking about Cairns). He shed a lot of hair but not dander, so my allergies weren't irritated compared to other dog breeds. We got a Jack Russell later who tormented and kept him young into his twilight years. What wonderful breeds!
Sounds like my cairn is typical, stubborn is a nice word to describe him. If he doesn't want to come when you call him, he won't. He'll stay just out of reach or looks at you and takes off. Still a very nice dog though, he just marches to his own tune I guess.
Also have an English bulldog, she will come running when you call, and is not at all fickle.there's also no doubt that she loves us, can't mistake that look.. Gotta love those dogs!
@skippycroissant Lol...not cairns. My cairn knew a certain distance where I could still physically reach him. Within that circle he would come. Outside that circle, he'd look at me then look away and take off. They were bred to be stubborn little scotts.
Accurate description of Cairn Terrier temperament. Your dogs demonstrate beautiful coats and it is definitely attributed to coat stripping. I own two Cairns, and I do bathed them often wit Lavender baby shampoo because I love to cuddle with them so much. Thanks for sharing.
Hiya. I've had my 'not-so-little' Cairn Terrier for 3 years, now. I don't think he's had more than 3 baths.
All of those were due to severe horseshit rolling-in. Sorry, I know it's bad for the fur but I draw the line at living in a house that smells of stables :D
I just lost my Cairn/Schnauzer mix. She was hit by a car recently. But they are great companions, that's for sure. And really fun to have around. RIP, HB. :(
if your cairn terrier is a ponger, it's because she is a ratter originally and the rolling in dead birds, dead fish, horse manure, etc, is to disguise her smell. If she pongs it's because she's rolling in dead stuff. I just love her, pongy fish smell n all. My Bonnie is the best. Her full name is Bonita Assunción Fradet Beltrán, and she rules the roost. My hardnut husband is a big softie with her.
we have a cairn terrier mix bitch and she is so good natured. we have three cats and she never chases them. a male terrier wouldn't be so gentle methinks. She needs lots of exercise and playing with as she is a working dog originally and intelligent. i just love her to bits.
I have one she's so cute and loves attention but she stinks pretty bad anybody know a good remedy for a stinky puppy?? I've tried to give her baths but she just winds up stinking again in a week or two.
I have a Carin and he LOVES to bite my ankles. He's very obedient tho. He knos the words "walk(for a walk outside), food, get em(for the squirrels, planes, etc.),and come" so I don't see why she would say the don't learn that much...
We have a Cairn terrier and I love him to bits! We used to work a lot too(not anymore) but the dog got used to the fact that we weren't always there. If you just make sure you have enough time to walk him during the day you'll be fine:)
@winracso Cairns are independent, but believe me, if you get one, he or she will be focused on YOU. I adopted a 7-yr old terrier about 6 mos. ago. It's true that he already knew me, but he was so easily enculturated into an environment of a Brussels Griffon, big English Yorkie, and 1 cat. Fabulous dogs!!!!! They love being outdoors, no matter what the weather.
@winracso If you take your dog for a nice walk before you leave for work, and then get someone to come in in the middle of the day and throw the ball to your terrier about a thousand times, your dog should be fine.
Mine loves the tennis balls. However, we get them in golf ball size. She picks at them a bit until the fabric is a little loose. Then, holding a little loose fabric between her teeth, she tosses them herself. We probably have about ten of these balls around the house in various states of deterioration.
Our Cairn was put down unexpectedly 2 years ago at age 10. ToTo was so wonderful and was obsessed with the tennis ball! Wouldnt eat or sleep without it by his side. My dad brought it with him when he was put to sleep. He always listened and was such a cuddler! Love Cairns!!
I almost cried watching this; we recently had to have our Cairn Terrier of 12 1/2 years put down. Unbeknown to us at the time, she had liver cancer (for how long, uncertain). But when she was in her prime, this description fit her to the T.
As far as the center of attention, when we were all in the living room, she always had to be on my dad's lap. Probably because I had no lap for her to lay on. She thought she ruled the roost, Dad was king, I was heir to the throne, and mom was her slave.
Yeah, thats hard. My cairn of 14 years was put down a few months ago due to liver failure as well. He was in such good health up to that point, it was a hard call.... but he was suffering and the doctor said there is not much you can do.
check out my dog viseos.i have a little blond lhasa mix, possible part Maltese and maybe a little cairn in her.see for yourself.her personality is similar,.
i do not agree with this woman in regard to child's age. our three cairns love my niece more than anything else. now she Is 4 years old and our male dog plays with her.
but she is right due to dogs' look of "i don't want to".^^
I have a 4yr old red brindle cairn. he's by far the most disobedient dog I have ever owned yet my favourite. They have such personalities and are generally 'smart', they make great family pets and love to play but arnt too demanding like a spaniel as they are quite independent. An important bank document came through the door today and my cairn has completely destroyed it lol, they are very territorial and will hate the mail man for sure but get along with everyone once they meet them :)
I Have a Cairn Terrier. She is now turning 9 in sept and we have had her since i was 4. i love her very much and yes, she always insists on being part of my family. she is a prefect dog. I love Candy! (her name) she us a cute tan one (:
my carien terrier is very active and enjoys makeing messes and jumping on ppl and humping there legs! O_O his name is tiko and i love him :) he my baby
MY dog is very energetic and he is 8 years old. He barks if anyone knocks on the door and even when i say "who's there" he goes nuts. I wrestle him too playfully of course but he keeps me company when I'm lonely which is great. Cairn Terriers are just good dogs in my opinion.
Our cairn terrier is very energetic. Once, we left the house for about 20 minutes, and somehow she got to her Pedigree. She ripped it all up. But we love her! If you want to see her, go to my channel.
YES they are. Dont get me wrong I LOVE my dog but he can get REALLY annoying. Especially when you are petting his belly and then out of no where "RUFF RUFF". He makes me jump. But I dont know how reliable my information is since he was my 1st dog and we didnt properly train him.
My Cairn Terrier of 12 years just recently passed on. She was very loyal. But another issue this lady forgot to mention is that they are territorial. She didn't like mom coming around dad, and if mom did come in to talk to dad, the dog would have to get on dad's lap, as if to say "he's mine."
We're doing okay. Every now and then I look for her but that's just a habit from the last 12 years. Going to take a while to get over. But during the last year or so she was starting to suffer, so in those respects, I'm glad she passed on peacefully.
I have a Cairin terrier who has never had any kind of classes and she is the most obedient dog I have ever owned.. she is also very great with little kids, she is very loving.
I have a Cairn Terrier, her name is Coco, she is very mature now that shes about to be 4 in May!! Yet she still barked at the computer when those Cairn terriers also barked.
I also have a cairn terrier, Samuel, he is a little gangster, with a real sens of humour:) What the woman says in the vid is sooo true: when you say come here, sometimes he just looks at you like "noooo, i don't want to"!
my family had a cairn terrier who passed on recently.. i enjoyed this video but it makes me cry a little inside thinking of the little guy, he was truly the best dog ever... i really miss him a lot
aww, I'm so sorry to hear about your loss...I know how hard it is. I lost a little one a few years ago who was 13 years old...I cried and cried for weeks, but now, even though I miss him just as much as before, thinking of him gives me such happy memories. I know time will do the same for you!
Cairn Terriers are awesome. They are okay with young kids too. My grandparents had one and when he was 16 years old he had this special spot in this room, and whenever anyone went there he got really grouchy. But when my sister was a baby she went in there and sat on top of him and he didn't do anything because he knew she was just a kid. It was very sweet .
I have two Cairn Terriers and they are quite funny and are full of energy. Rocco and Stella are my two and they're lazy from time to time, but for the most part they full of energy and very affectionate.
we think that our dog is part cairn terrier because she really looks like one except her size. she used to be really adventurous and runaway all the time. but now she is REALLY old (about 14/15) so she just sleeps all day. but she is the most cuddley dog i have met.
Our little cairn loves to sit on our laps and he's pretty obedient too :-) We love that little pup! But he can be stubborn sometimes...true to his cairn character...
All Cairns have an independent streak that can't be taken away from them, but with the proper training, they can still have a great sense for who's boss, and be respectful of that. At least my Josie does.
I know, I disagree with that! It's not that mine gets utterly filthy (since she lives indoors) but even just a walk outside makes her have that dog sweat smell, and any vet will tell you that regular baths (about every 2 weeks for Cairns) is better for their coat and skin. Sheesh... some people.
haha. i take my dog to a doggie day care a few times a week. and it's a great place. and he's a VERY social little dog.
i washed him one day, took him to "school" and when i went to pick him up, he was an entirely different color, because he ran and played in the dirt so much.
but at least "school" makes him less hyper. even though he runs for the tennis ball at about 5:00 everyday anyways.
Oh, tennis balls, don't even get me started. My husband played tennis in high school, so we have an endless supply, and Josie thinks they all belong to her. There can even be 5 on the floor and she starts playing with one and if you throw a different one, she knows that's not the right one. What's the difference??!! She's so funny-- aren't Cairns the absolute best??
oh my gosh, YES! Pellew plays soccer with teh tennis balls xD
he'll either have one ball in his mouth or some other toy, and he's run and kick and paw around the ball.
however, he HATES BLINDS (as seen in one of my videos). i didn't get footage of him doing it, but when anyone goes near the blinds, he'll run for his tennis ball, come back, and shake his head all about and growl. he is the funniest dog ever :]
Blinds, hm? That's strange. I think all dogs form fears of certain things. Josie's okay with the blinds, but she hates the vacuum cleaner (typical, I think) and any form of plastic bag, which makes it fun when it's time to go potty outside and I bring a pick-up bag with me. She's really only afraid when it's being shaken and making that crinkly noise. Changing the bag in the trash is like terror for her, and no matter what, I can't seem to make her understand that they're okay.
i think that might be a good thing because then she probably wont try and get things out of the bin which can be really gross and annoying because you always have to clean it up.
I agree with this! I've had my Cairn for 3 years, now, and a niece (now 6) and nephew (almost 2). My Cairn may sometimes get annoyed by her hair or tail being pulled, but she's not aggressive. Cairns are actually very respectful of small children, and in fact was very protective of my nephew when he was a newborn. They get a sense that babies are tender and won't tolerate any nonsense around them. As long as ANY dog knows it's not okay to be aggressive to children, they won't be!
I don't agree with this woman AT ALL!! I have a 5 month old cairn and he is AWESOME with my 9 month old baby AND my 9 yr old!! Plus he is in the top of his puppy class! They are wonderful dogs and are easy to train if you have the right attitude and a good trainer!
all the way! same here but im 12 and i hav a carin and she is obedient, loving to walk and play, and most of all she is my favorite dog and my cat is awesome. they love to play and they get along
I agree, I get so tired of people claiming that a dog is too stubborn or disobedient as an excuse for poor training and ownership. I did 2 obedience classes with my Josie and she will always have that Cairn independent streak, but she's still very well minded and loves to train and learn.
so, if you got a cairn terrier and put it in obidience classes since it was a pup, would it still be stubborn then? can you raise them to not be very stubborn? will they come if you call them?
I put my Cairn in obedience classes starting at three months, but even before that, I house broke her by myself. I only took mine to a total of 2 obedience classes, each 6 weeks long. Cairns (any terrier, really) will always retain a little stubborness, but the main point is that they are intelligent, and thus, they LOVE learning. Anything that keeps them using their minds makes them happy. Mine does come when called, unless she's in trouble, then I make her sit/stay and I go get her.
Another thing (I ran out of characters) each dog is different with the cuddle-factor, and I've heard this varies most from males to females. My Josie isn't a lap-dog, but she does love to curl up right next to my legs on the couch and against either mine or my husband's back in bed. They cuddle, but on their own terms. I've seen others that are lap-dogs, though. It just depends on the dog.
I have a Cairn and live in an apartment. They're great. She's wrong when she says they're not obedient. Notice that earlier she said they're very intelligent. She's right. That's why they respond great to training! They also love to train and learn because it keeps them using they're brain. My Josie is very obedient. She only sheds a little, and since the hairs are course, they're easy to find and pick up. I do bathe mine, though, about every two weeks. It keeps the coat healthy.
I love my cairn terrier Yoda

COMMENT IF YOUR CAIRN HAS SIMILAR TRAITS TO MINE:
1. He likes humans more than dogs, and strangers more than family
2. When the bell rings, he barks/cries continuously
3. When we throw a ball, he will run up to it, but walk back without touching it
4. He isn’t cuddly. If you invade his space, he turns away
5. He lies down with his hind legs out, like a mat. He also lies down in a stretch position, with his butt sticking out
7. He thinks he is one of the big dogs, and is the leader of the pack.

That was cool, thanks for saying terriers are stubborn! LOL :D
Too bad terrier "descriptions" read or sound too much like "sales pitches". :/
All the terriers I ever had was given to me by people that couldn't take their craziness any longer and seemingly "un-trainable terrier brain".
I tell people "you either like a terrier personality or you don't, get a poodle". LOL :D

gamerleo 1 year ago
Sounds like my cairn is typical, stubborn is a nice word to describe him. If he doesn't want to come when you call him, he won't. He'll stay just out of reach or looks at you and takes off. Still a very nice dog though, he just marches to his own tune I guess.
Also have an English bulldog, she will come running when you call, and is not at all fickle.there's also no doubt that she loves us, can't mistake that look.. Gotta love those dogs!

They will come when called, any dog will if they trust and respect their master.
skippycroissant 1 year ago
@skippycroissant Lol...not cairns. My cairn knew a certain distance where I could still physically reach him. Within that circle he would come. Outside that circle, he'd look at me then look away and take off. They were bred to be stubborn little scotts.

Oh hell, I'm not getting into the 'fur v hair' argument :D As far as I'm concerned the words mean the same thing.
And Robbie (my Cairn) pretty much has what the hell he wants. Usually against my wishes :D
Still, what can you say to them when they give you that cute look? Apart from 'put it down! Nooooo!'
AlchemicalDavid 1 year ago
Accurate description of Cairn Terrier temperament. Your dogs demonstrate beautiful coats and it is definitely attributed to coat stripping. I own two Cairns, and I do bathed them often wit Lavender baby shampoo because I love to cuddle with them so much. Thanks for sharing.
ycastille 1 year ago
Well, she says that cairn terriers don't need to be bathed. Thats not true, because they do need to be bathed, but not as often as other dogs.
Dominican909 1 year ago
@Dominican909
Hiya. I've had my 'not-so-little' Cairn Terrier for 3 years, now. I don't think he's had more than 3 baths.
All of those were due to severe horseshit rolling-in. Sorry, I know it's bad for the fur but I draw the line at living in a house that smells of stables :D

if your cairn terrier is a ponger, it's because she is a ratter originally and the rolling in dead birds, dead fish, horse manure, etc, is to disguise her smell.

We have a Cairn terrier and I love him to bits! We used to work a lot too(not anymore) but the dog got used to the fact that we weren't always there. If you just make sure you have enough time to walk him during the day you'll be fine:)
Rubenlamafan 2 years ago
thank you very much!
winracso 2 years ago
@winracso Cairns are independent, but believe me, if you get one, he or she will be focused on YOU. I adopted a 7-yr old terrier about 6 mos. ago. It's true that he already knew me, but he was so easily enculturated into an environment of a Brussels Griffon, big English Yorkie, and 1 cat. Fabulous dogs!!!!! They love being outdoors, no matter what the weather.
Smart? Oh, yes. And playful.
jax2u 2 years ago
@winracso If you take your dog for a nice walk before you leave for work, and then get someone to come in in the middle of the day and throw the ball to your terrier about a thousand times, your dog should be fine.

Mine loves the tennis balls. However, we get them in golf ball size. She picks at them a bit until the fabric is a little loose. Then, holding a little loose fabric between her teeth, she tosses them herself. We probably have about ten of these balls around the house in various states of deterioration.

BuckWilliams17 2 years ago
Yeah, thats hard. My cairn of 14 years was put down a few months ago due to liver failure as well. He was in such good health up to that point, it was a hard call.... but he was suffering and the doctor said there is not much you can do.

BuckWilliams17 2 years ago 2
Our 8 year old Cairn, Stampy, pass on last Halloween. We were so devastated, so I hope you are doing well coping.
We now have a 5 month old Cairn. She has already developed such a neat personality and she reminds me of our old one so much.
Cairns are a very unique and special breed.
mkim1114 2 years ago
We're doing okay. Every now and then I look for her but that's just a habit from the last 12 years. Going to take a while to get over. But during the last year or so she was starting to suffer, so in those respects, I'm glad she passed on peacefully.

They're so adorable. But he definitely has a mind of his own! Mr. Independent.
icatchlife 3 years ago
All Cairns have an independent streak that can't be taken away from them, but with the proper training, they can still have a great sense for who's boss, and be respectful of that. At least my Josie does.
daisylover80 3 years ago
don't need to be bathed?
not my cairn! :]
Sango8080 3 years ago
I know, I disagree with that! It's not that mine gets utterly filthy (since she lives indoors) but even just a walk outside makes her have that dog sweat smell, and any vet will tell you that regular baths (about every 2 weeks for Cairns) is better for their coat and skin. Sheesh... some people.
daisylover80 3 years ago
haha. i take my dog to a doggie day care a few times a week. and it's a great place. and he's a VERY social little dog.
i washed him one day, took him to "school" and when i went to pick him up, he was an entirely different color, because he ran and played in the dirt so much.
but at least "school" makes him less hyper. even though he runs for the tennis ball at about 5:00 everyday anyways.
Sango8080 3 years ago
Oh, tennis balls, don't even get me started. My husband played tennis in high school, so we have an endless supply, and Josie thinks they all belong to her. There can even be 5 on the floor and she starts playing with one and if you throw a different one, she knows that's not the right one. What's the difference??!! She's so funny-- aren't Cairns the absolute best??
daisylover80 3 years ago
oh my gosh, YES! Pellew plays soccer with teh tennis balls xD
he'll either have one ball in his mouth or some other toy, and he's run and kick and paw around the ball.
however, he HATES BLINDS (as seen in one of my videos). i didn't get footage of him doing it, but when anyone goes near the blinds, he'll run for his tennis ball, come back, and shake his head all about and growl. he is the funniest dog ever :]
cairn terriers are the BEST!
Sango8080 3 years ago
Changing the bag in the trash is like terror for her, and no matter what, I can't seem to make her understand that they're okay.
daisylover80 3 years ago
you have GOT to tell me how you house-trained your dog!
we've had pellew for over a year, and he STILL shits in the house!

Every dog I get is a Cairn terrier and they love their owners from ages around 6+ ,not 10+, and yes they are very funny and cute
mycubbies 3 years ago
I agree with this! I've had my Cairn for 3 years, now, and a niece (now 6) and nephew (almost 2). My Cairn may sometimes get annoyed by her hair or tail being pulled, but she's not aggressive. Cairns are actually very respectful of small children, and in fact was very protective of my nephew when he was a newborn. They get a sense that babies are tender and won't tolerate any nonsense around them. As long as ANY dog knows it's not okay to be aggressive to children, they won't be!
daisylover80 3 years ago
my old dog sherman was a cairn terrier. i loved him so much.

NinjaOfComedy 3 years ago
I don't agree with this woman AT ALL!! I have a 5 month old cairn and he is AWESOME with my 9 month old baby AND my 9 yr old!! Plus he is in the top of his puppy class! They are wonderful dogs and are easy to train if you have the right attitude and a good trainer!
keara07 3 years ago
all the way! same here but im 12 and i hav a carin and she is obedient, loving to walk and play, and most of all she is my favorite dog and my cat is awesome. they love to play and they get along
Pantherzfan89 3 years ago
I agree, I get so tired of people claiming that a dog is too stubborn or disobedient as an excuse for poor training and ownership. I did 2 obedience classes with my Josie and she will always have that Cairn independent streak, but she's still very well minded and loves to train and learn.
daisylover80 3 years ago
so, if you got a cairn terrier and put it in obidience classes since it was a pup, would it still be stubborn then? can you raise them to not be very stubborn? will they come if you call them?
also, do these dogs cuddle?
sweetmarypie 3 years ago
I put my Cairn in obedience classes starting at three months, but even before that, I house broke her by myself. I only took mine to a total of 2 obedience classes, each 6 weeks long. Cairns (any terrier, really) will always retain a little stubborness, but the main point is that they are intelligent, and thus, they LOVE learning. Anything that keeps them using their minds makes them happy. Mine does come when called, unless she's in trouble, then I make her sit/stay and I go get her.
daisylover80 3 years ago
Another thing (I ran out of characters) each dog is different with the cuddle-factor, and I've heard this varies most from males to females. My Josie isn't a lap-dog, but she does love to curl up right next to my legs on the couch and against either mine or my husband's back in bed. They cuddle, but on their own terms. I've seen others that are lap-dogs, though. It just depends on the dog.
daisylover80 3 years ago
I will always have a Cairn. I have two now and a Westie. I would not trade them for the world !
fedupyours 3 years ago
Which one of those terrier would be more obedient and fine living in an apartment? I'm considering either Cairn terrier or a westie. Do they shed?
regtr04 3 years ago
they don't shed much. if not much, not at all.
they're great gaurd dogs, but anything puts them off.
for example, my dog despises binds, boxes, doors, and vaccums.
and he barks if anything creaks in the night
but they're hilarious and great fun <3
Sango8080 3 years ago
I have a Cairn and live in an apartment. They're great. She's wrong when she says they're not obedient. Notice that earlier she said they're very intelligent. She's right. That's why they respond great to training! They also love to train and learn because it keeps them using they're brain. My Josie is very obedient. She only sheds a little, and since the hairs are course, they're easy to find and pick up. I do bathe mine, though, about every two weeks. It keeps the coat healthy.
daisylover80 3 years ago
