I think a big reason the AR had problems being accepted was the 5.56 round. It's just so small peoples gut reaction is to think it can't do any damage. They don't realize the power of squared in the energy equation. You double the velocity, you quadruple the power. That's a big deal but not obvious at first glance. To this day it's still widely believed the 7.62x39 round does more damage in a human but fact is, the 5.56 has the same energy & is more effective at dumping that energy in an enemy.
Now when I used the M16 in a jungle enviroment, it worked, our engagements never were farther than 50 to 100 yards. When we moved to an open area where the engagements moved to 150 to 200 yards, the M16 stopped working. The 65gr 5.56mm doesn't have enough power at that range or farther to stop the enemy, then your reduced to spraying and praying. Also because the M16 has never passed the testing, they dropped the standards.
@TheBardicDruid The accuracy of the AR family gives you an advantage at longer ranges. You do realize the VC tried to engage at as close a range as possible because they didn't stand a chance at longer ranges due to the poor accuracy of the AK? I guess the low power of the 5.56 is the main reason the military has never considered replacing it? You are aware they didn't use the 65gr round when the M16 first came out?
@TheBardicDruid By the way, I noticed that according to your profile you were 13 yrs old at the end of the war. When exactly did you use an M16 in a jungle environment? Were you 11? You didn't even know what round was being used.
The AR platform is a great design. It's not perfect by any means but it's the best small arm seen in a long time. There is a reason even new designs are based on it.
Ignorant people like you spreading BS is the only reason the M16 has a questionable reputation.
@shananagans5 Who said I was in Vietnam??? That's not the only place US troops have been in a jungle. And if anyone is ignorant it's you people who shoot paper targets and know nothing of combat, or the military.
@TheBardicDruid So when exactly were you of combat age when we were fighting in the jungle? Grenada? Oops,No real fighting there. Certainly not enough to see how well a rifle would really work. Panama? Oops,no real fighting there either, but the music was good. Kuwait? Oops, not a jungle.
If you did serve, you deserve respect. If you didn't, which is what I suspect, you need to shut your trap & quit pretending you did. Lots of people sacrifice for the US & it's BS to claim you did if you didn't
@shananagans5 No fighting in Panama?? How do you know??? Were you there??? And what about Salvador???? Your the one who has no idea what your talking about, you really need to shut up because your ignorance about things is really starting to show.
This vid is a crock, the first AR 15's were 7.62x51mm NATO, the problem was Stoner made the barrel too thin and one split. The government then shut down the US Arsenal and privatized weapons manufacturing. That's when Colt submitted the 5.56mm version of the AR, well a bunch of military officers and government officials were share holders. So the Colt rifle became a major money maker for them.
@Primeda Well in the combat situation of Vietnam many soldiers and Marines use M2/M3 Carbines and Thompson then. Don't underestimate the thing - 150 yards of effective range isn't bad.
@Chemowski Controllability isn't important either apparently. It bothers me when people look at firearms so black and white then just declare something to be the perfect ultimate end all be all. Every choice is a compromise.
@Chemowski and now some wise words that ive heard early .if ihad to to another planet and i was alowed to cary only one weapon with me that would be an ak 47. now my friend lighten up m 16 a 4 ar 10 etc etc sand will kill them .nice looking weapons thogh
@Chemowski With direct gas impingement, after the first mag of ammo the M16 family starts jamming. The more you fire, like in a firefight, the more it jams. That's one of the reasons as soon as we had captured AK's we started leaving the 16's in the arms room.
@TheBardicDruid That's funny because after they changed the powder & chromed the barrel the Armalite platform has had very few problems. I can easily run 1,000 rounds through one without a problem. True, the DI system does run hotter than a piston gun but that's generally not a problem. By the way, in Vietnam our soldiers were not allowed to use the AK in normal operations. The unique sound could cause confusion.
It's interesting to note that, in years past, the experts determined that a large, .30 caliber cartridge was unnecessary, and switched to a .22 caliber cartridge.
And yet, in recent years, that large, .30 caliber cartridge that was once considered impractical for the infantryman has returned to service in the form of the DMR/EMR.
Kind of like the old saying, you know? "The more things change, the more they stay the same."
@1hogfan83 apparently you have absolutely no experience with firearms, let me put it simply. The AK47 is heavy, inaccurate, bad choice of caliber, it's not straight-line recoil designed, therefore it only adds to the uncontrollable inaccuracy in combat situations where you need to fire many rapid rounds in quick engagements at fleeing enemies. I do research for a PMC and I get this question 300 times a day from people I have to educate, so don't feel bad, any questions, let me know.
Wait now hold up James. The AK-47 IS AND ALWAYS WILL BE, better than the M16, its rugged, simple, easy to operate and clean. The 7.62x39 cartridge is a wonderful round you can carry as much of it as you can .223. I own both (civilian models) and they are both wonderful.
@isamtator Obviously you have never been anywhere near a combat situation with a soldiers loadout. Most people haven't so don't feel bad, but having done this time, after time, after time and time again I had to correct you about your comment "The 7.62x39 cartridge is a wonderful round you can carry as much of it as you can .223.". Which made me laugh at first, but all joking aside you need to either stop posting as if you've never had a MOLLE vest full of AK mags or STFU all together
@de4th1snt3nough I have an Ak-47 and an AR-15. I may not have full battle gear but yes I have carried it with a 1911 on my hip through my woods, with 10 fully loaded mags, I walk through my woods with it for several hours. I may not have been to "battle", but I know what I am talking about you goddamn call of duty playing nigger's bitch!
@isamtator LMAO so you've never done anything remotely like a combat situation, yet you know what you're talking about. @de4th1snt3nough I don't give a fuck what you may think or say you have done. I'm not a kid I show plenty of respect to people who actually seen war and fought in it, I doubt that you have ever even seen combat other than on the PS3 and xbox 360.
@isamtator I didn't know you were at my house all the time....oh wait YOUR NOT because otherwise you'd have known I don't own a PS3 or any sort of Xbox Their a waste of my time, I am a DMR and team leader, so obviously I have to practice my marksmen skills nearly every single day, I'm also an author and my first book about combat tactics is being published as we speak, look for it, "The art of Airsoft" by Daniel kyle Prince, look me up on facebook and check out my arsenal its sweet

I can out shoot you with my Ruger P95, I bet you I can out shoot you with my Smith&Wesson model 66-2, or my Beretta m9, Glock 19, Rossi snub nose .38, etc.
@isamtator Thx for completely missing the point of firing a gun, what have you done to these guns that you own? looks to me you either googled the name of some expensive guns, or took the names of what your father owns and typed it out, I'd take you on with anyone of these bets, I do with many people quite regularly, you see everyone of my firearms are customized not in a factory, but by me and my father, that's why I know I can outdo anyone who just posts random guns on youtube lmao
@de4th1snt3nough Well your argument would be valid if it was not for the fact that my father never those guns. I bought all those guns, I work my ass off for everything I fucking own, I do my job, and I do it well and I get paid well, yes some of the rifles I own are passed down but that is only two of them, the rest of them I fucking payed for you sniveling little prick. I bet you're living off daddy's money. Do you suck your dads dick with that mouth? I bet you voted for Obama?
@isamtator I'll tell you what, I'll come to an agreement. I will stop with whatever I'm doing to incite more argumentative conversation. If you will do me a favor and tell me how good that Rossi works, which is it, the R35102 or R35202 ? I've got a friend that's looking for a +P (preferably ++P) in a CCL type revolver, I've heard of the hammer becoming sticky, ever had that problem?
@de4th1snt3nough Well, it's model R35102 .38 special capable of firing plus p loads, the gun is accurate for what it is, I shot three 100 round boxes of ammo through it. I love I think the quality of Rossi firearms, are just as good as my Smith&Wesson, though the finish is not a beautiful as the Smiths but they are just as rugged, the cylinder locks up tighter on my Rossi than my Smith, though, but that's because I have fed it a steady diet of .357 magnum.
@isamtator I'll make this easy, the M16(A3) is capable of FULLY automatic fire, just like the M16A1, the M16(A3) was released in 1994 and is identical to the M16A2 except its fully automatic capability. The M16(A4) is the same as the M16A2 but with a flat top upper receiver that has an integral rail called the "M5" made by Knights Armament Company (KAC) and allows the user to mount different optics such as an ACOG or EOtech sights for greater advantages during combat situations =)
They only briefly mention that they claimed it was self cleaning, and didn't issue cleaning kits, basically told people to not bother to clean their rifles and then acted so surprised and random design issues to redirect the blame.
@wikieditspam It wasn't the military that had anything to do with it, it was Remington that told the military that their powder in the cartridge burnt clean, therefore didn't need to be cleaned from the barrel and it was all f-ing bullshit so the military had to issue not only cleaning kits, but instructions that featured naked women in it in order to better teach our men to clean their rifles, the document was called "the sweet 16" lol
@de4th1snt3nough Right, though I think Murphy's Law sometimes applies it self to the things people claim can't go wrong, I really wonder why they'd believe that "clean burning" is the same as it being completely non-contaminating or even self-cleaning. Now what if they completely fixed that exploding barrel issue with the AR-10 before they thought about making the AR-15...
If you call me to pick between AKs, HKs and M16, it's due to environment. M16 is freaking light that is comfort in urban combat grounds and it's close to hand as well.. lots of country are given or even using it so most armies know how to operate with a M16. HKs and AKs are for jungle or even desert warfare with will not gum up the HK and AK weapons but AK no matter 47 or 74 would still be my choice as it's easy to maintain, idiot proof, cheap and reliable.
Yea the M-16 may b always called as the most effective assault rifle ever implimented and its also unreliable so it should be always introduced as : The M-16. The most effective but most unreliable assault rifle people have ever created, used or saw in combat.

The korean war storys remind me of the Finnish winter war. Small groups of Finns against waves after waves of russians

The M16 platform has recently beaten the old 7.62 1,000yd record in competition.
The AK could never hope to keep a 1 MOA grouping at 100-200 or 300yds let alone 1,000.
