WOW. I can't thank you enough for posting the entire final NBC Overnight. Wonderful find! Used to stay up to watch it every night, my 19th year. They had such a clear liberal bias, but were witty and intelligent enough that even I had to watch anyway. (Fortunately, leftists usually aren't this clever and quick.) I recorded this final episode on an old audio boombox. Thanks to you, at last, an impossible 27 years later, I have the video. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! And so it went.
the most tragic part of this cancellation was the retarded shit they replaced it with. i called up to curse out the poor girl at the switchboard about the phony baloney assholes taking up a good time slot, and she, quietly, let me know that everyone there behind the scenes felt the same way.
We lost OVERNIGHT when I was 21 years old and watched this finale broadcast when I SHOULD have been in bed getting ready for classes the next day . I am not ashamed to say that now, at 47, I still shed a tear at this closing credit montage- especially when viewing the luminous brunette visage of Linda Ellerbee. Thanks.
In highschool I would work late in the evening on weeknights at a grocery store. Upon returning home I discovered NBC News Overnight. Upon seeing this now I realize just how much I miss this type of reporting. Linda Ellerbee deliver was soo spot on ...and the writing..well lets just say in the era of soundbites and instant news cycles....I miss the insightfulness of the prose.
It was great - THE model for how a network news hour should be.
The depth, analysis, and covering what others dared not touch.
A highly intelligent news show - not all predigested. Controversial topic? Cover both sides, exceedingly well, and each from their own perspectives (e.g. El Salvador).
This program showed us what a real news program can be. It was storytelling at its finest. Today's "news" is nothing more than that ego filled pundits, spin doctors and commentators with a financial or political agenda on programs moderated by meat puppets. After over 20 years I left the news business in 2002. I couldn't look myself in the mirror anymore.
Thanks for posting the final broadcast. I was once asked the party question, "If you were stranded on an island what two people would you want with you?" I had a quick answer...Oprah, cause you know they'd be looking for her and Linda Ellerbee because I would hope they wouldn't find us too soon. Ms. Ellerbee and everyone involved with Overnight deserve to be remembered for their incredible work and collaboration that lasted far too briefly.
I meant to write that OVERNIGHT remains the best "news" program, ever. I just didn't want to be alone in this thing. I figured if everyone else could post here and louse up their copy, so could I.
A good point bears repeating. OVERNIGHT remains the best new program, ever. I believe it is the only news program that should be in reruns on Nick At Nite. I am also eternally grateful to Deborah Johnson and Bill Schechner for helping me get my paycheck cashed at the NBC Cashier window at 30 Rock in 1983. Was it really such a big deal that I left my wallet in my office?
I revisited this video, the last installment of Overnight, when San Francisco's CBS5 announced in May, 2008 that it was firing Bill Schechner, along with everyone else at the station with any journalistic chops. Watching the entire final installment was a wonderful treat, and a reminder that not that long ago, people were smart enough and interested enough to tune in to Overnight. Finally, thanks Linda for Lucky Duck and for your ongoing commitment to quality television. You give me hope.
Hey, there's the lady from Nick News.

Possibly the most intelligent, best-written news show ever...

To Neal Baker - A very pleasant man; why are there so few?
And To Pat Trese: I still have the copy about Grantland Rice & "how you play the game" that you read on the final night.
It is a treasure without price.

To: Ivan Kleiman & Steve Johnson - Great workin' with ya! (Oh, & by the way, Aleyda Artze screwed up the "next week" schedule again).
To: Carl Henry III - Sorry about that dreadful "spy" screenplay.
To Jered Dawaliby: Hope you made it back to New Orleans with your sanity intact!

Damn, but I love this sort of thing.
Nice job on their part, and thanks for finding this -- or having it -- and posting it.

I often ruminate on Linda's Mark Twainian sense of the gobbledy Pac Men games we all went on to play.

Thank you so much for posting this; I've waited almost 25 years to see this again.

The cancellation came right after Ellerbee's mom's death of cancer. How she managed I don't know-it was just brave.

Ever since this show went quietly into that dark night, the collective news IQ on television, dropped like a rock.
