i hear this a lot from deadheads "thats what jerry would have wanted man..." how the fuck do you know what jerry wanted?
i have to ironically break my own rule and say that if theres one thing that I'm sure jerry would have wanted, it would be for people to stop predicting what he would want in certain situations in youtube video comments.
furthur is perpetuating the great music we all love, so be grateful to bob and phil for still rocking these songs after 45 years
This is it! The real "Deal"! The dead is a language and goes beyond any single person. Thank god there is proof this formula is being passed on right. This is a very important and unique time for the boys, best band out there doing it right!
Yeah, the Ames show was even better, lots more jammin'. Almost went to the Chi-town shows, but couldn't get the cards to fall into place..... bummer. And hey, Dan, I don't think Jerry would like to be called 'the fat man' no more than any other heavy set person. WTF? I've always just called him 'Jerry'. We all should. It's called 'Respect'.
Saw Further a couple nights ago in Santa Barbara. It is just great to see Phil and Booby still jamming and the other band mates are great. Obviously its not the Dead without Jerry, but Jerry's spirit lives on. !!
I must say that John is a FANTASTIC fit in Jerry's memory and talent....After being at the Gelston Castle show in Mohawk, NY, I am forever grateful that the music plays on............. Thank You Phil, Bob, John and friends.
This video seriosuly makes me cry. Me and my bro went to this show and it toatally blew our minds. Downtown Manchester turned in to A big shakedown afterwards lots of fun. My friend that went with me is now in jail for a long time .brings back some incredible memories that will never slip my mind. Be grateful to be alive because someday youll be dead or in jail.
bla bla bla.....these John vs. Jerry comparisons are getting old. Yep, we all would rather see the fat man playing rather than John, but he does a damn good job and knows the GD catalog as good as anyone. If you don't like it, don't listen.
Man I'm loving these Furthur shows.....thanks for the great video TheRanFan!
After a long hiatus due to a back injury "CRAZY" Bill Sweeney will be joining the tour Tuesday night at Penns Peak near Jim Thorpe Pa. This is sure to be a blow out show. Sweeney will be actively strolling the parking lot with his band of Merry Pranksters. Sweeney and his cohorts are known for starting the "FREE HUGS" craze so be sure to get them while they last.
I disagree. This is a cover band with original members. I understand the Dead scene. I'm an old Deadhead from way back and have seen my share of shows.
To me, the music was first and foremost. The scene these days to me seems likea way for people to feed their addictions. Jerry was a pivotal member who cannot be replaced. To deny that or to say its the same as Brent dying is foolish.
The people that came for the "scene" and not the music destroyed the band.
@MrMightyslim It isnt covering a song if you helped create it. Bob will never cover a dead song, he will simply play a dead song. (Tongue firmly in cheek for this next part) The Grateful Dead were a cover band. Is Pete Townshend now covering songs he wrote because Keith and John are dead. Is it a cover when Paul Mccartney sings Hey Jude now that John and George are gone. Instead of calling them a cover band go see a show and close your eyes. Just pretend he is still there.
If Noel Redding was alive and he had another drummer and guitarist replacing Jimi and called it the Jimi Hendrix Experience, you'd say it was a Hendrix cover band featuring the original bass player. McCartney sang on the original Hey Jude so he should sing it. Bob Weir did not sing on Stella Blue or Birdsong or Althea or a Help on the Way or a million Jerry tunes that he should not be singing. Pretending Jerry is there would be deceiving myself. They are a mediocre tribute band.
I disagree. Barry Sless rips it up like Jerry better than anyone. I saw Furthur. John doesn't posses Jerry's lyrical sensibilities when he plays, his spark, or his rhythmic creativity. I found him to be rhythmically bland at the Lowell show I saw. I have seen better guitarist is Dead cover bands.
@zakattack700 They could have done so much better for a guitarist and they settled on John. I remember the first time I saw DSO I thought he was the worst I ever heard doing Jerry from shakedown lots from Boston to Shoreline. There are better Garcia influenced guitarist in many Dead cover bands I've seen. I'm happy for the guy don't get me wrong. Must be a dream come true for him but from a musical standpoint, he leaves he flat.
@MrMightyslim That's your problem. The fact of the matter is, every musician has a musical fingerprint. Jerry's was pretty big, you can always tell when he's playing just by the way he plays. Nobody else can touch that. people can come close, but not matter how good someone is nobody's going to sound exactly like Jerry. perhaps they wanted someone who was good but not identical
The last Furthur show I saw, I felt John did much better. The contention is that there were more qualified applicants for the job. Barry Sless, Steve Kimock to name a few. My problem is not that he's not Jerry. The guitarist in the Rhythm Devils are more qualified. My problem is he's not that qualified for the job. Its that
they could have done better and they took the easy route out(and possibly the cheaper one).
Just as Jerry brought his influences to his bandmates, John is doing the same.
Jerry once said "music is listening". These guys are all awesome musicans and are doing what they were born to do, with great passion. Anyone who can get past the politics and comparisons gets it. Confuscious say " man with one foot in past and one foot in future is pissing on himself"
The DEAD is the DEAD. It's the original remaining members. This is NO cover band.
Jerry is DEAD and always has been!!! Just because he's physically left this Earth does not mean that the remaining members can't continue. In fact I'm sure It's what Jerry would have wanted. Let's stop this negativity. Just LOVE and LISTEN! Good Vibes comin at you from California to Manchester, NH and EVERYWHERE in-between. PEACE TO ALL!!!!
@losangelesgraff Yes but you would have to know a good deal about the original dead to know that what is going on now is kinda messed up. Bobby screwing over Jerry's death wishes, Bobby and Phil not honoring things they said in interviews about people filling Jerry's spot, its just sick. I am sure Jerry would want the music to never stop, it was about the feeling, the music, the scene and what love was coming out of it. But things have changed for the worse, hence Billy and Mickey not joining
thier keeping the dead alive and doing a dam find job how els is fast edd and the rest of us sopose to keep spreading the love with these guys stepping up to the plate? MrMightslim i feel like u dont know the dead society so i duno the better dead covers arent as big as furthur is so back furthur 100 percent there tearing it up keeping the scene true
Jerry is still dead. This is hurting. Its necrophilia. Jerry is irreplaceable so why try to replace him with a guitarist who plays Jerry in a Dead cover band. This is nothing more than a Dead cover band with original members Bob Weir and Phil Lesh.
@MrMightyslim People were saying how in the hell do they go on without pigpen, then Keith, then Midland they have had quite a few losses but just kept going cause it's about the community and the music and IMHO Im glad Warren isn't in this one but I do miss Bill and Mickey
Anyone know what the guitar John's playing is? it looks like a Carvin, but there's none like it on the website so I think it's a custom... Can anyone confirm what it is though?
Yes, it is a Carvin DC 400. Custom with the three double humbuckers. I saw these guys a couple of nights ago in Portland and was wondering about his guitar too. Funny because I play a Carvin too but I thought it might have been a custom Alembic or something. Sounded freaking amazing...
