just to say something to knopfler's skill and impact on everybody. My favourite bands = Avenged Sevenfold, Dream Theater, Rush, Guns N Roses etc.... My favourite guitar solo ever that has yet to be even challenged - Sultans of Swing. blows me away every single time I hear it.

Finger picking is much better for smooth chords work and sweet meaningful solos. First of all the dynamics are much better, the sound is cleaner, with less action, the chords are better since you can hit any seperate string without blocking out other strings, so the chords are very clean. the only thing is it takes longer to get use to and you cant do any pinch harmonics.

In my opinion a great test of whether music is really great is to listen to it just in complete darkness and silence apart from the music itself and the emotions you can feel from it are astonishing. It works really well for some of the longer and older pieces by genesis and also equally well for sultans of swing, telegraph road and private investigations by dire straits :)

hendrix is nothing. he could only jam after a melody. thats not impressive. he died at 27 or so. he couldent acomp anything at that age compare to giants like knopfler. or mr guitar chet atkins. chet played it right. the thumb is ment for the bass strings. and then add the rythm and meoldy. with the melody, you can be doing it after 30 years or so he said. knopfler says in the album with chet that half the stuff chet coud play,i could never play. that says pretty much it! think again

Try to play songs like "have you ever been","castle made of sand", "little wing", "Bold as love" or "Angel", those tunes are more complex then the simple Dm, C, A#, A progression of the main Sultans of swing's riff. (i love Knopfler and his stile)
