I used to fly a Benson Gyrocopter in air shows back in the 70's. This guy got behind the power curve on take off and took a hard landing, fortunately not fatal. When you lift off you have to nose the aircraft forward as soon as you're off the ground until you gain speed. Leaving the rotor tilted in the full back position after take off is like opening a trailing parachute.
Why did this happen? Climbing at slow speed? Should be better decision to push forward for horizontal flight to go for speed and after then start to climb? Or was it something else?
Our car was parked about 10 feet from that crash at the private lot across the street where he crashed. It was covered with gravel, dirt and some carbon fiber bits from the blades striking the driveway (no damage to our car). Glad he was alright after that incident!
Must have just missed this, I saw it flying monday, must have been just prior to this.
I also saw a Bonanza stall on sunday afternoon while on base to final for 27. Hit at a 45 degree angle off runway heading in the grass. Barely saved it from spinning, got the wings level and power in as it pancaked on but no damage until it hit an object in the grass (light or sign) with the prop and right flap. Scary. Too many incidents this year, from all types of aircraft and pilots.
Why would such an armature choose to fly at the biggest airplane gathering in the U.S.???bizarre!

We must have been standing right by who filmed this. Very scary. The guy did walk away from it. Great video. Thank God no one was hurt.
